HOW I GLUE UP MY TABLE TOPS - PROCESS FOR BEGINNERS

- I promised a bunch of you that I would show you how I glue up my tops for my tables. This is a process that can be simplified for beginners if you get your lumber yard to help you out by surfacing two-four sides for you. That takes care of a lot of the hard work for you.
If you have a planer and a jointer already, then make sure to surface all 4 sides to begin this process.
TIP ONE -There are lots of ways to accomplish this and I am in NO WAY saying I have the best method, this is just how I do it. I DONT EVER USE POCKET HOLES FOR TOPS AND HERE IS WHY, I have found that pocket holes dont allow for wood movement and end with table tops cracking or warping from the pressure the pocket hole creates. I had to redo several tops the first year I started my business due to this. So now I use Z clips to attach the top and glue and strong joints to create the tops. The glue and biscuits (if you use them) allow for movement throughout the year. ALL WOOD MOVES through the year with the weather. It WILL expand and contract.
TIP TWO - Lumber. I try to always buy DRY and straight lumber. Wet lumber will continue to dry while in its permanent space and can result in shrinkage, huge bows, twists, and cracks as it dries. Lumber should be less then 12% moister at most, I never get anything more then that because you will see lots of change.

Great vid! Quick tip, instead of marking all the boards a thru d or whatever, just draw a chalk triangle across the boards, they can only go back together one way, and the chalk is easy to wipe off, or use a light pencil triangle. Good look and much success!

I made a table top for my coffee table out of 3/4 red oak, cut in 1" strips. I used Elmer's wood glue, used pipe clamps and angle iron top and bottom with deep clamps to align the wood strips. No biscuits, dowels or splines.
That was 35 years ago. The table is still in daily use with zero problems. So just glue will work just fine!

Z-clips are a great solution. You can also use "figure 8" clips as well which are similar. You're right that pocket screws are definitely a no-no for table tops.
Yep figure 8’s work great too. I always do the z clips because it’s easy for me to put the notch in the apron with the biscuit jointer when I’m working, seems to go faster for me. Thanks for watching! And for the great comment

Yeah I sand a ton (I have a video on that as well) and then my fave clear coat is this amzn.to/3sJSJZ3 its water based and easy clean up but very hard finish.

@@EternalHarvestDecor I’m wanting to build one for myself and am curious, how do pine 2x6’s hold up over time? Do they not warp/twist or crack quit a bit? I’m kinda going for rustic anyways so a little wouldn’t be too bad but I don’t want too much. Just curious since you have some that have been out there for a while.
These are actually furniture grade pine so they been dried and processed. I would not recommend standard hardware 2x lumber, it will crack, bow, shrink or twist over time. However if you are ok with some of that to add to the rustic look you could give it a go. I would suggest taking a moisture meter (a few bucks on amazon) with you and only by lumber that has a moisture level of 12 and below. That lessons the chance of movement for sure. Good luck! Oh and also seal both sides to help it maintain it’s shape as well.

If you are using the end boards as part of the actual table, a scrap piece of timber between the clamp face and board will protect the actual boards you have glued from damage from the clamps. Great job though.
You can also do this whole glue up with zero power tools, using winding sticks, a jack plane, and hand saw. Use dowels (optional) instead of biscuits for alignment and added strength.
If you're short on clamps, use blocks of wood between the clamp jaws and edges of your panel to distribute the force of your clamps over a wider area.

You Made slots with biscuit joiner so you can use zclips to attach table top….how do you determine how far down to go so the biscuit slots have a perfect fit for zclips to attach to the tabletop
So depending on the Z clips you buy will depend on the height. I usually measure the middle of my clips and adjust my biscuit jointer accordingly

I only buy hardwoods from a lumber yard that has been dried. If you buy from a big box, take a moisture meter with you and make sure it’s below 10% moisture before you buy. That will help a ton

Do you prefer biscuits to dowels? I have a biscuit cutter but not a dowel joiner or a dowel jig and I'm not gonna spend the $1k for a domino joiner. Why do you use biscuits instead of dowels? Thanks in advance for the help!
I only use biscuits if there is a slight variation in the lumber to help with alignment but honestly most of the time I don’t use anything but glue.
I'm a beginner. Dumb question: How did you get the sides of the boards flat, no bevel? I'm buying 2x10s from home depot that come with the rounded edge and I want a super flat table with no cracks. Do you use a table saw?
Not a dumb at all, in order to get square edges from box store lumber you just need a table side or table saw. The “correct” way would be to joint the edges on a jointer and then rip then other side on a table saw. Or you can just rip it down with a table saw. I need to make a video about this haha.

I'd make sure all boards are same length before and cutting.

So you put on boards that were, from left to right, (1) bowed up, (2) bowed down, (3) bowed up, (4) bowed down, (5) bowed down, and (6) bowed up.

Can i ask if there is machine making the biscut wood? Because i dont have this type of biscuit in my country.
Normally I purchase biscuits pre-made from local supplier.
Commercially made biscuit is actually pressed at really high pressure, then they'll swell up in the groove.
alternatively, if you're after help with alignment could make little tongues and router a pair of grooves.
I've switch to dowels after my biscuit cutter died.

What were the dimensions of the boards? They look like they might have been 2 x 6 x 8's but just want to be sure
this was 5/4 Alder and I ripped them to different dimensions to make the table a custom size for my customer. They are between 4-6"

When it comes to woodworking tools $70 isn’t very much. And if your assembling table tops it may be worth the price in my opinion. I build for customers and $70 is inexpensive in my opinion. 🤷🏻♀️

I totally get that, but I do state in the video this is not necessary for the build. It just helps me to align the top. It doesn’t add to the strength at all. If you have a straight enough joint just glue and clamp. Should be fine 👊🏼 good luck
