Normally, I watch videos at 1.5x speed, but damn, this dude talks really fast! Great interview though. It’s crazy to realize that people I admire are very similar to how I am personally. 🤯
Louis is holding himself back here, he normally talks 1.5x this speed, or 2x this when something ticks him off. They also probably cut out one or two "Apple can suck my m** f** balls!"
Hi guys, I first watched the Coldfusion video, but this one came out earlier. Well, am here now 🙂 It's so important what Louis has been pushing, him and a few others are really pushing this topic for years now, be it home electronics, tractors, cars or so many other products. Thanks for the great collab, nice! Cheers 👍💪✌
Since half a year I own the Fairphone 5, owned the first one (crowdfunded at the time) as well. So far the 5 is perfect for me, enough for me and 7 years parts and warranty, what else do I need?
In terms of when and how it started, I believe it was Apple. My first awareness was the iPod. I could replace the battery in my Creative Zen. My friend could not replace the battery in his iPod. That was the first time they had a big enough monopoly to lean in to their anti-consumer tactics. (A monopoly they got not by designing a better device but by preventing competitors buying the small harddrives, so their device had to be larger.) I swore off Apple then and there, and have never regretted it.
Personally i hate how thin and sleek (and slippy) modern phones are. The first thing i do is put them in a big, bulky case to stop them breaking the first time they have the slightest fall.
Srsly needs a wikipedia like page of brands and products that are anti consumerism so we can vote with our wallets! like sweet baby inc detected (on steam) but for hardware.
There is a reason it doesn’t exist. It’s always going to be a question of who’s recommending it and its back to square one again. But there should be one from Rossmans, because he has more credibility than anyone I know that care about this stuff.
I just found out both of this channel and how the voice of coldfusion actually looks like, man.. I know that specific british accent predominantly used by immigrant, for some reason I imagined a thin european dude with english as 2nd language who picked british accent 😂
Oh yeah- and don’t forget that _____ has created global expectations of an increase in living standards. That is the goal right? Economy, health, etc. What should we say to them? How do you think they will respond to the answer ? But the expectation has already been set. And where are we locating the resources? And what does that say about our integrity and leadership?
Would an official be elected or appointed? And instead of a G_ forum, how can a chain structure internationally be relied upon.. for example.. there is an amazing sport that has a regulatory body that experienced a scandal. That was a sport that does not necessarily rely on.. does this make sense?
[31:26] Not so convinced forcing Apple to abandon the Lightning connector is such a great thing. Forcing everyone to conform to ONE way of doing things is just another form of oppression. Ironically, how is anyone suppose to innovate if you are told you can’t do it differently… APPLE’s iconic 1984 commercial appears to be very much relevant today, forty years later, than it ever was before… Ultimately, it will compromise Apple’s walled garden security. We have purposely avoided the Android-scape, because it just seems like packs of stray dogs are roaming parks, and security is scarce… It’s a bit like telling all tech companies, they all have to wear the same school uniform. Sure they can embellish a little, but it’s basically the same core outfit… 🤔
Customers also need to understand that life has friction. If I get a dopamine pellet so fast- I may begin to expect all industries to conform to velocity standards that are unrealistic and not possible- which in turn creates waves for the other industries- but baking bread does not happen at such speeds- quality products and services maintain standards and are aware of the health of the ecosystem. Now put these capabilities in populations that have historically been ____. How do you think their leaders and/or users will respond with their new faster _____?
I'm mad that I'm just finding out you’ve had a podcast this whole time. 🫠 I’ve been watching the main channel since like 2016! You really need to promote this more on the main channel, my guy!
The thing is; Mercedes almost gone bankrupt because they build too good cars; customer base ended, no spare parts needed. What could they do? The issue of Right to Repair and durability of products has a root in business models. We would have to pay for durability and right to repair. How? Subscription? How do we incentivize it?
Subscription model, clearly. You really think Apple isn’t already profiting significantly off those US$9.99/month iCloud Storage / Apple Music / etc. plans? Not to mention the absurd markup they bake into all their retail products… US$200 keyboards, anyone?
@@jonathanloganmoran I think Apple's model is a bit unfair; they ask you to buy their devices and pay for subscriptions. While this could look like this; you subscribe, so you get a phone. May be some payment is needed, so people would not throw the phone into sand or against walls, but the majority should be payed with subscription.
I got a strange idea of making hardware hacking legal in some part of the world. So everybody who is interested in right to repair will be able to hack around and produce cheap spare parts.
Louis it would fit the podcast better if you look at the interviewer instead of at the camera. I know its different because you normally record your own videos but it makes the podcast a bit weird to watch.
*WTF kind of a question is that? Louis is looking at the camera and laptop display. They are literally six to fifteen time zones apart. Louis in his upstairs studio in Austin, TX and CF is (presumably) somewhere in Oz or UK.*
@@blackrifle6736 ah I didn't realize it wasn't recorded in the same room. Well regardless the video is weird when one of the hosts looks at the camera and one of them does not.
I don't have an issue with it. RUclips demonetizes and reduces the reach of videos with cursing. Personally, I think it would've been better just to do jump-cuts.
25:13 there is a 1 excuse, and that being that smartphones are within EMF range of the user almost always, so a bad fix could literally induce cancer or some other illness. Granted, this is a rare case, and shouldn’t stop all the good aspects of right to repair, but I am 100% certain when right to repair goes through there will be some genius that repairs something and then the user will want to sue the manufacturer for damages of long term exposure to that bad repair. Again, it is a less than .0001% chance it will happen, but extrapolated over millions of users it will happen, and they will want to sue the manufacturer instead of the repair guy, and odds are that the manufacturer will have to pay that lawsuit to save face. There definitely should be pairing authentication to avoid these sorts of unjustified lawsuits, but the pairing shouldn’t be such that it legit bricks the software. It should be a simple 1 time message upon turning on letting the user know that manufacturer is no longer liable for potential lawsuits due to a repair that was done from a 3rd party. There is a sweet spot for these matters, for sure. It’s annoying that they take parasitic approach instead of the consumer friendly approach. 😓
Cars are far more dangerous and people are allowed to fix those. Automakers aren't going broke fighting lawsuits from people who went to a bad mechanic. This is exactly the kind of nonsense the manufacturers try to spread.
Rossman for President!
He's got my vote!! ❤
YES!!!!!!!!!!!
He's a big enough dick to get things done but also reasonable
Let's draft him for president! 💖
FK yes
O god, the crossover we didn't know we wanted
never seen Louis this calm ..big ups to you guys for this discussion

It's kinda weird to see Louis Rossmann is so polite and calm...... I like it better when he ranting though...... again, where's blackberry.... ?!?!?
The technical and industry aspects are well-reasoned, but what truly delighted me is the suggested joyful approach to activism.

THE RIGHT TO REPAIR SHOULD BE IN EVERY CONSTITUTION'S AMENDMENT
No. It shouldn’t.
That doesn't even make sense.

Excellent episode, thank you for informing people about indispensable topics like these!

this was a good listen. thanks!
