*The Pillar of Autumn:* "Was I a good ship?"
*UNSC ship designers:* "No." (Create an entire class dedicated to her) "I'm told you were the best."
Oh, gosh. Almost made me cry....
Goddamn, I never played the game, but...I told myself I wasn't going to cry. I have to go.
I read the book a long time ago, and when I read that it was capable of fighting with 90% of it destroyed I had to reread the whole thing.
90%. I wondered why they didn’t build more like it, then I understood because they didn’t really need that strong of a navy.
And I’m glad they used the PoA as a basis for the Autumn class. Whether or not it can stand up to other ships, either covenant or whatever other sci-fi they bring out, IMO, PoA is a class on its own when it comes to resilience.
*goes to heaven amidst a nuclear fireball*
@@bogustoast22none25 come to think of it, humanity is able to build resilient stuff if we are allowed to. On a history note, Bismark took so much damage that nothing else on the upper deck was functional, but it still kept floating and refused to sink down. There are rumors it was in the end forced to sink in by it's own surviving crew in order to make the Allies stop firing and bail the ship - it may be just propaganda gibberish but we've got to admit, that ship was made to resist damage. We also learned from Bismark that resources are limited so you either go with the greatest ship yet you can't build many more and if you lose it, you're done (Bismark had only a sister ship and were both eventually sunk) or you build less powerful ships, but you can build an entire armada - like how US started pumping out ships when it got into the war.
Perhaps the same view UNSC had: you either allocate a lot of resources to a few strong ships yet you can't fulfill your role to protect the Human Space region, or go with weaker ships but more in number to achieve your needs.
"There was only one ship, they called it, the Pillar of Autumn."

It always felt like a heartbreak. The Pillar of Autumn feels as much of a character as Keyes and Foehammer
@@mixedbeatz16 I loved the Pillar of Autumn's concept and struggle when the first Halo was released and man.... I loved it again when I went trough her in the MCC release. And it's admirable how much punishment took before going down, it was followed and constantly shot at by an entire Covenant fleet section, got boarded in and still managed to land mostly in 1 piece on the first discovered Halo Array. I know that Covenant didn't dare shooting at it when it was near the Halo in order to not risk damaging a holy relic for them (as they perceive anything precursor related) but this ship managed to get there, in one piece, despite all the odds it had to face on.
I'm no english native speaker, so I always wondered what the rest of the expression is 🤔
@@einsteinyh The full expression is "fuck you, and the horse you rode in on"
A ship that can lose 90% of its armor and remain in the fight would look like a zombie, you keep shooting and it doesn't go down
It reminds me of the Bismarck battleship from WW2 the British put thousands of pounds of rounds into it and it just kept fighting
@@Linki8uu kinda. It was mostly combat ineffective for much of the later fight. Shells just aren't great tools for sinking ships, and battleships had absolutely absurd torpedo defenses.
Pillar of Autumn reminds me more of USS Johnston during the battle of Samar. If you're unfamiliar, that's the one where a small fleet screen for some escort carriers consisting of destroyers and destroyer escorts charged two battleships, multiple cruisers and destroyers and drove them off long enough for the escort carriers to escape.
Reminds me of the MCRN Donnager Class at the Season 5 Finale of The Expanse. Despite being SEVERELY damaged, she was still fighting with PDCs and even 1 Railgun still being operational... until being back stabbed. Donnager Classes have been on the bad end of the stick but they will still be BEASTS in my book :D
@mandellorian I know. Her crew still possessed unrivaled testicular fortitude for charging the incoming Southern Force. And thanks to the misidentification (in part due to the Japanese fleet's belief that nothing lighter than cruisers would charge down their force) Johnston survived long enough to blow the bow off a cruiser and shoot up the superstructure of several others.
@@Linki8uu Slight over exaggerations there pal.
"You always make your shield at least as strong as the strongest weapons you know... even if they are not your weapons."

The old battleships were all designed with armor capable of withstanding their own primary guns fire.

The Pillar of Autumn has a real life counterpart, the destroyer USS Johnston. It was captained by, Ernest E Evans, who was a total badass. The Johnston was part of a small task force facing off against a MUCH larger and more powerful Imperial Japanese fleet, and they were the only thing standing between the Japanese and the vulnerable American landing forces. Tens of thousands of lives were at stake, so Evans turns his ship around and charges straight into the maw of the vast Japanese battlefleet. The Johnston managed to torpedo a heavy cruiser (a ship over six times its size) crippling it, before getting in a gunfight with another cruiser. The Johnston traded blows with the much larger ship, sustaining numerous hits which damaged its engines and several gun mounts, but in exchange managed to maul the cruiser so badly that it was unable to continue fighting, and had to break off. The battered Johnston then moved in on another heavy cruiser, intending to intercept it before it could strike the vulnerable American carriers, getting into a point blank knife fight with a Japanese destroyer (a ship comparable to the Johnston) on its way there. It set fire to the Cruiser's bridge, but was unable to engage it in time to stop it from landing several hits on one of the fleeing carriers. The Johnston broke off to engage an entire squadron of Japanese destroyers who were heading to make a torpedo run on the surviving carriers, despite having half of its weapon mounts destroyed and its speed limited by damaged engines. Now, engaging an entire squadron of 8 destroyers by itself, the badly damaged Johnston managed to inflict enough hits on the leading two ships that they were forced back and were unable to get off an accurate torpedo salvo, which saved the thousands of sailors on the carriers from a watery grave. Eventually, completely surrounded by cruisers and destroyers who pounded the Johnston relentlessly with gunfire, the crew was forced to abandon ship shortly before the Johnston sunk beneath the waves. The Japanese admiral was horrified at the heavy losses being inflicted on his forces, and combined with the poor visibility, he was convinced that he was facing a much more powerful fleet, and ordered a full retreat to prevent further losses. The Johnston was recorded as having been sunk three times that battle by the Japanese, twice as a heavy cruiser, and once as a battleship.
Piorun energy.

They literally took the most durable ship in the fleet and gave it several times the firepower of a destroyer, a reactor capable or powering all of that, the most powerful AI humanity had, and a captain that had beat a covenant fleet that would have been an even match for 10 UNSC ships. Of course the Autumn was incredible
“They let me pick. Did I ever tell you that? Choose whichever cruiser I wanted. You know me. I did my research, watched as you became the ship we needed you to be. But you had something they didn't, something no one saw but me. Can you guess? Honeycombs. (And maybe a bit of luck.)”

Do you think if the ship hadn’t been destroyed at the end of the game, would the UNSC have tried to salvage her?
maybe not salvaged her as a space capable vessel, that landing had to break her spine amidst all the other damage. however, it is likely that if the UNSC could drive and keep the covenant away from 04 and put the flood back in containment, PoA would have been formed into a primary base of operations if for just the various equipment and facilities she had aboard.

7:46 They weren't kidding about the POA's state-of-the-art reactors. At 300% power the ship's graphics suddenly went HD.
One thing most people miss is that the Pillar of Autumn wasnt just a Halcyon class cruiser, one of the first cruiser type vessels constructed, she was also one of the first of the halcyons. this little detail is important as after the first several were constructed, the honeycomb structure was removed due to cost reasons. If she had been in a later flight, we likely would have been on a different ship and she would either be a wreak or scrapped.
I also find it funny that Hood commanded her early in the war when she was a glorified troop truck.
So essentially the Autumn and other ships of the Halcyon class were like the Rocky Balboa of the fleet able to take a lot of punishment and keep going.

A little surprised they didn't start building more of this class during the war. Especially when the upgrades were developed.
The good refit package wasn't developed until almost the end of the war. Prior to that, Halcyons were very underpowered cruisers. Most of the existing hulls were either scrapped or lost in combat long before the Autumn got turned into a super ship.
Love your videos, and they are like worthy on their own. But the one thing that always makes me click "like" in the end, is that outro. XD
The true purpose of the Pillar of Autumn was to deliver many Spartan 2’s such as Master Chief, with many advanced AI’s, such as Cortana, supported by the best of the best UNSC ordinance & personal had to offer, deep behind Covenant lines, do capture a Prophet alive, to force a Cease Fire in exchange for the Prophet returned alive.
The Invasion of Reach botched these plans, but in Humanity’s favor, lead to the end of the Human vs Covenant War.

MOST DEFINITELY liked and enjoyed watching this one right here!
The opening battle of Halo is one of the only two examples I know of the UNSC causing more casualties than they take in a space battle.
(The other being the one with the “Keye’s loop”)
Clearly the main advantage is Keyes.
Well there was also the time Admiral Cole single handedly annihilated an entire Covenant armada by insulting their religion and challenging them to come and face him like a man before detonating a *massive* bomb that wiped them all out together...but yeah, Keyes is a badass too

Congrats on getting 800k subs!
An interesting video. I didn't know that the Pillar of Autumn was that survivable. I mean, it survived the opening battle in Halo CE, but I always thought she was more or less fresh out of dry dock at the start of the battle, I didn't know she'd been slugging it out over Reach as well.
For survivability, the UNSC were right, at least when it comes to kinetic weapons. To quote the almighty Phlydaily: 'No armour is best armour!'
Basically, if you've got a rod of tungsten moving at several miles a second, that's going to be hard to stop or deflect. If it penetrates, it'll cause a lot of spall damage, it'll fragment, and you'll lose a large chunk of the ship in the exit wound. It's better to have a thin hull and just let the penetrator pass through without significant opposition, hoping it doesn't hit something vital.
Against plasma, this goes out of the window. Instead of a high penetration weapon that does damage deep, you have a weapon that does most of the damage fairly shallow. The thick armour of the Autumn would be able to tank more damage, the superstructure would be able to hold her together, and the redundancy would ensure she could return the favour.
We will always remember and lift a glass high for the Autumn and her fearless crew for without them the universe would be a very different place in halo
Thank you Captain Keye's you will never be forgotten
