  • Sheesh, that's a mouthful. Yard dice are a very easy and fun project. Especially with the end of winter and better weather on the horizon!
    These started out as a resin project but ended up becoming much simpler. Honestly, I don't think they would have looked near as good had I gone with my original concept!

    I also appreciate not doing the tier thing with patreon. One of my other favourite channels did and now they offer so many things to those that pay that used to be offered to everyone as a community. I've made a few of these! Only I used a 6x6 Cedar beam. Used a heat gun to char the pips. so much fun to make and use! I like that you made them glow in the dark, adds a whole lot of new ways to use them.
    You should find a wood similar in density or slightly less dense than polyethylene and make some true-to-weight/size ultimate frisbees out of them on the lathe! Then make some wacky ones out of epoxy.

    Having made a bunch of these - the glow in the dark is a GREAT idea! Thank you! And thank you for showing all your glow experiments. PS - for any sized dice, you can quickly make your own template by dividing the size into 16 pieces (draw a line down the center, then down then center of those halves, rotate the piece and do it again) - the intersections of those lines give you the points you need for the spots. As long as you pay attention to which holes you're punching, you really only need one template. A bull-nose router bit chucked in the drill press also produces nice round holes if people prefer that. The glow idea is gold - icing on the cake - thank you for the fun channel!

  • @melissacaldwell5598
    @melissacaldwell5598 7 лет назад +1

    Very cool! So my thought is... if you are charging them outside in the sun, only 5/6 of the sides will glow. You need to make a stand for them... drill a small hole in one corner of each, get a dowel or rod that is slightly smaller than the diameter of the hole to rest them on. You could then stick them in the ground or on a wooden base. That way each side would get nearly equal exposure.

      Which means that if you don't consider reflections to be distinct, there is only one possible d6.

    • @Robertlavigne1
      @Robertlavigne1 7 лет назад +2

      We're diving into the nerdy end of things here, I like it. If we don't ignore the reflections there are two possible d6. These are differentiated by their chirality. If you look at the corner where the 4,5,6 all meet, the order of the 4,5,6 can be right-handed (clockwise) or left handed (counter clockwise).

    Fun fact Pete, opposite sides of any die add up to one more than the highest number. On a 6 sided die, opposite sides will add up to 7, on a 20 sided die, they'll add up to 21. Much easier to keep track that way.

    I would suggest redoing the dice exactly the same as you did up to 7:05 but before you spray the surface with the glow-in-the-dark paint, you fill each pip with resin colored to contrast with the paint, a dark red or black perhaps. I think that would look much better as you wouldn't see the divot at the bottom of each pip.

    It'd be interesting to see a set of DnD dice like this. Although a D20 would be a pain in the bum I'd imagine lol

    You should take those really cool plastic quarter machine rings and toss them into a cup of resin to make a blank for a project.

    i think it would have been really cool if they were painted neon green or whit with the pigment on top. with such a bright color underneath the glow of the pigment would be more reflective and make it glow brighter.
