Yard dice with inlaid wood

  • For Christmas 2017's batch of homemade gifts, we set out to make "Yardzee" sets of big yard dice for our extended family. Rather than settle for dice with painted-on or burned-in dots, I wanted to try inlaid wood for the dots. It was a lot of work, but I really like the result. This was also an interesting exercise in making things in large batches.
    The white dice were made from a 4x4 post of untreated pine with walnut dots cut from a dowel. The "red" dice came from some old posts I had replaced on my kids' backyard playground. The bottom ends of the posts had rotted away, but I saved the rest and reclaimed it for this project. My best guess is that they're redwood. The white dots came from birch dowels.

    Ingenious hole jig - thanks!
    I had an engineer friend make me a metal template to make all the holes for my 17 die, but your jig would have saved me a lot of time & hassle.

    Fantastic! The spaces are the hole alignment makes me think this is a doable project. I couldn’t imagine using templates or punching to drill each one after seeing this.

    great video, i just got into woodworking i have made 2 crates, 1 was from Steve Ramsey the other was one i did free style, a bench top for my push sticks push blocks and frame strap i only made 2 die so far, that's all i had laying around plus it was pressure treated, i ha dan idea for the numbers, on a leftover piece i was thinking caulk or even flex seal, i am trying the caulk then the more i thought about it i an thinking the caulk will get dirty.great video. i am thinking about a wood template out of plywood then just set on die then drill, i don't have a drill press yet.

    Just found this awesome video. How deep did you drill the holes and did you push the dowels all the way in? I'd be worried about the glue pouring out! I need to buy a few tools for this. Thanks!

    • @BenBrandt22
      @BenBrandt22  4 года назад

      I drilled the holes about 1/2 inch deep, and pushed the dowels all the way in. As long as it's a relatively snug fit, you shouldn't have to worry about glue or anything falling out
