Hey Sam. To reduce the scale have you ever considered wrapping the blade in a Heavy Foil real tight so air doesn't get in.
I have seen "Dale Pratt" do this and it works.. check out Dale.. he has some good knife making videos. Stay well..

I have seen that done, and have tried it for smaller blades, and it definitely worked! I found if I just normalize and anneal after forging, that the scale isnt a big issue. What problem I run into more, is the steel decarburizing in the kiln, which the foil helps with as well.
