  • Marjorie Tahbone, 28, demonstrates the traditional method of filleting a fish using an ulu during The Gathering, a family-friendly community health fair hosted by the Southcentral Foundation, on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, at the Egan Civic and Convention Center in Anchorage. "It's all about identity and who we are as Inuit people," said Tahbone. "I want to make sure that I'm a positive role model for the younger generation... Or at least help people have a better understanding of what it means to be in a subsistence lifestyle." (Rugile Kaladyte / Alaska Dispatch News)

My friend gave me an Ulu for Christmas. We were celebrating his 90th birthday and here he hands me the knife. This is the first video. We fish Chinook and Coho here on the Yaquina and even though I am Sicilian and Jewish, I live among the confederated tribes of the Siletz Indians and I cherish learning anything from my native friends. Ayyyeeee! 😊

This is why the Benchmade Nestucca is my favorite knife of all time. Best all around Kitchen, hunting, camping and bushcraft knife I have ever owned. They are discontinued but you can find them on Ebay. Great choice of steel, very unique looking, very very practical for many different applications, and looks great in a knife collection. The resale value is great as well. Worth every penny in my opinion!

She has beautiful traditional tattooing. It is wonderful that she takes such pride in a skill that is traditionally the work of Inuit women, without claiming that the traditional work of Inuit women is demeaning. It is not! Cutting and preparing the fish and meat, sewing the family’s clothes, and tending to the seal oil lamp, as well as raising the children, are absolutely essential skills and roles for survival in the Arctic. For this reason and others, Inuit women are greatly respected and treated as equals in their communities, even though men and women perform different traditional roles. Her skills are amazing and essential, and she has been justifiably praised and recognized for them!

Nice and interesting video. Sorry if this comment seems a little unrelated, but I couldn't help thinking about my own upbringing as a poor white child while this young woman was talking being about being a proud and positive role model for her Inuit people. She uses her skill with an ulu to make a living and teach others about her work and traditions because she feels they are important, and others now recognize the contributions of her skills, art, and culture. In my case, my cultural group has never really felt such belonging, such pride, or such motivation to be activists on our own behalf. On the contrary, we are still often portrayed as jokes. This is a sad thing for children in this situation who may have great potential. Maybe it's past time to change this.
