+Quarter Hoarder Thank you. It was one of the highlights of our Peru/South America trip. Huaraz often gets overlooked because of the more popular Machu Pichu for hiking.

Great content! Did you rent your gear (tent, sleeping bag and mattress, cooking gear) there or did you bring your own? I'm going in 5 weeks and have yet to decide what would be the best strategy!

We had our own gear. We did buy some rain pants for fairly cheap prices but ended up not using them. It rained on us once during the trek...lightly and quickly. Everything could be bought there but if you have compact, light and good quality gear, bring them.

So can one do the Santa Cruz Trek on a one week vacation? From your video it looks like such a beautiful place to visit. That we don't have up here in the states. Thank you for your video loved it. How safe did you feel getting there. I would love to take my kids there. we are only starting to get into backpacking and plan on hiking to LeConte Lodge in the smokey mountains this year for our trip.

One week in Peru would be pushing it beyond the limit. The hike itself can be completed in 4 days/3 nights. We gave ourselves an extra day on the trek as we were dealing with altitude problems. And therein lies the dilemma. You will need at least 3-4 days in and around Huaraz making day hikes to acclimate and also take into account that Huaraz is a long bus ride from the capital Lima. So to make the trek in 7 days starting and ending in Lima would be nearly impossible as well as unsafe due to the probability of altitude sickness.
We trekked independently and carried our own equipment. To make things easier, you can sign up for a guided trek in Huaraz. Tents, food, donkeys to carry your gear, and transport to and from trailheads are included in the price, but not the national park entry fees; expect to pay $100-125 USD (per person) if you shop around and bargain hard.
It's a great trek and we highly recommend. Don't rush the experience if you're short on time, the altitude and weather conditions are a big factor. Good luck!

What month of the year did you do the trek?

We did the trek early January. It's not the dry season but we only encountered light rain mostly at night. Ideally, it's better to do in October or November (we were told).
