Hi everyone, I’m planning to build a few pieces of furniture with Dovetail Joinery and since I don’t cut dovetail joints every day it’s easy to become a little rusty. In this woodworking project, I show you how to build a dovetail joinery jig that is a great way to consistently make perfect dovetails every single time, and the good news is… anyone can do it!
My advice to cutting dovetail joints is to take a day or two to build this jig and then practice cutting Dovetails. Once you are more confident in your joinery abilities, build a simple project to reinforce what you’ve learned. I hope you enjoyed this joinery woodworking video and thanks for watching, Jon

Honestly I think it would just be easier to do them by hand. The learning curve may seem daunting but once you get your first few done you will feel good about it. By one hundred you will be an expert.
What level of precision and fine measurements. Like a perfect jigsaw puzzle fitting together. Beautiful. Thank you, Jon!
The flat ground blade is great for the pins and hogging out in between the tails.
But I angle my blade at the same angle as the pins, using the sled to make the angle cut of the tails.
I stand on the out feed side of the saw to easily line up the blade with my cut lines. If I need to shave a hair off for a nice fit, easy to do. Thanks

Two of my favourites right there! I just made a bunch of small boxes out of scrap wood (box joints), but am thinking this makes VERY attractive joints for bigger boxes or drawers
IM not really sure how this saves any significant amount of time. There is a good bit of setup using the table saw, then the band saw, etc. If you are making simple through dovetails, the router jog seems to be more efficient. Personally, I don't see how this improved the dovetail, nor do I see how it saves time over the router or even hand cut. If you have any reasonable experience hand cutting dovetails, you can do it at least a quickly as this. I would love to see a side-by-side comparison of hand cutting vs machine cutting to really view the time savings. It is a nice jig, and you do get good results with it, no doubt, but it's not for me.
It's nice to see that even someone with Jon's level of skill there are still things to learn. Thanks Jon.

I remember Norm Abram saying, “I never met a power tool I didn’t like!” Although using Rob Cosman’s technique for hand cutting dove tails is very satisfying, this power tool technique of yours is pretty damn slick! Once the jig is built, you’re ready to rock and roll. Nicely done and thanks for a terrific idea.
Doing it by hand is far quicker and once you start to become proficient you can start to modify them.

Brilliant jigs. I especially like the stop jig on the band saw (that's quite a time saver).
Though dove tailing by hand isn't time consuming when using the proper chisels and hand saw.
If you ever decide to buy a track saw I can say that my electric makita has stood the test of time both in the shop and on the field.

Seems to work well, but what’s the point of having your pin jig be so wide? Do you plan to cut DTs onto cabinet tops? Also, if you use those 7 degree wedges, you can make a guide for cutting the tails at the bandsaw.

Thanks for the great ideas for this jig. I recently took a hand-cut dovetail class, which was great for understanding the mechanics and fit of the joint, but on a large project I'd never want to spend that kind of time. My daughter and I plan to renovate her kitchen next summer with cabinetry we build ourselves and batching out the drawer joinery on the table saw will be a huge time and labor saver, probably with better results.

@@JonPetersArtHome yes, it should be. We took a cabinetmaking class together (her intro to woodworking) last summer. Now she has just moved into the house in Sweden that she and her husband bought during summer 2020 (he's Swedish). It's very small, meaning they can afford to use nice materials and our own labor to do it right. Here's to hoping Sweden opens its borders to Americans next summer.
I can cut hand dovetails and fit them far cleaner and quicker than any machine using woodworker can.
I would never do fine furniture with machine cut dovetail. The whole process may seem daunting to people but once you start to become proficient you will find yourself flying through them.

I'm fairly new to woodworking. I enjoyed your video. However, I don't understand the point of your jig. Here's why I ask: You drew the dimensions of the dovetails on the wood. You finish the dovetails with the bandsaw to attain the exact dimensions you drew. Why didn't you just do all of it on the band saw? What's the advantage of the jig vs. just the bandsaw? I must be missing something which is likely or you wouldn't have built it in the first place.

Absolutely brilliant jig. Not a fan of dovetails mainly because I’d rather not chisel and spend time on cleaning edges. This will allow me to incorporate dovetails once I practice on a few spares. Great video and keep up the great work!

Why not build half this jig, then flip it to cut the opposite angle?
Why dont you just tilt a blade and avoid the bansaw completely?
You are using machines....do it by hand and you will deserve admiration. I have done hundreds of Dovetails with my machines, it isn't that hard. Hand cut Dovetails takes an entirely different set of skills.
It would have been more useful to show all your failures along the way that "took practice", so that we know what to look out for. Now all we learned is that you eventually got it down and made at least one decent joint. Just a tip: no one can learn by just seeing you present the final result; we need to see the hangups as you're doing it.
I think that’s a given, no one’s going to watch a 30 minute long video about mistakes… I often talk about screw ups in my project videos… No handmade project is perfect
Well, that’s another way to cut dovetails, but there are easier ways...
