Probably one of the greatest "Elevator Moments" in any video game. As you descend down that lift from Crateria's dark, haunting atmosphere into Upper Brinstar's vibrant environment bursting with all forms of alien life, the music slowly creeping in and building up as you wait in the elevator pretty much declares: "This is where the game truly begins!" Masterful.
@@RobertSoul123 With a quick web search, you can actually find several videos, articles and listicles dedicated to elevators across dozens of videogames. They're just a very effective way of building anticipation and intrigue, or setting the stage for some character building while the game world loads! Another personal favourite is the elevator before the penultimate boss fight in Demon's Souls, for example.
I don’t understand these kinds of comments. If you want to say the song is fire just say that. This song isn’t even impressive on a technical level, nothing the Genesis or PlayStation couldn’t do.
@@xzb7644 The Genesis absolutely couldn't do this, it has its own unique soundscape that excels in different areas. As for PlayStation, of course any newer console can do it, what's your point? ***** I just realized this yesterday, but I think they heavily remixed it for one of Samus' and Pikachu's segments in SSBB in the Subspace Emissary as well.
Anytime Nintendo of America would put me on hold over 25 years ago, this was the 'hold music', I remember sometimes asking the person on the line to put me back on hold for another 30 seconds so I could finish hearing the song.
I remember downloading the game on my 3DS back in 2020. I am a huge fan of old video games, and when I heard this track for the first time I was blown away… such good music
As some here have said, the way Brinstar's theme fades in as you descend the elevator makes one _hell_ of a first impression. I played Super Metroid as a kid, but it's definitely one of those games I came to appreciate more and more as an adult--and a self-taught artist and writer.
As a guy who played the game for the first time a couple of months ago, I had the same experience. That precise moment clearly left a mark and it happens early enough in the game to hook you and make you realize the game is special.
Took me 30 years to realize this, but this song is kind of a riff on the song playing during the opening sequence of Day of the Dead. The marimba line around the 2:20 mark in Dead is almost exactly the same as this one. (ruclips.net/video/OA9nbtF0U5I/видео.html for reference) The chords are also very similar, plus this whole song got kind of an 80s feel to it. I definitely wouldn't be surprised if it was the inspiration.
This is my second Metroid game, Dread was my first, and I've enjoyed (almost) all of it, screw Phantoon though, I had so much trouble with that fight. Truly a masterpiece, and I'm surprised a game like that could run properly on an SNES.
I bought this game for the snes when I was kid at a junk sale for around £2. I had no idea what the game was, just that the illustration on this tattered and worn box looked good. The manuel was bent and torn. I had no idea of the adventure which was about to ensue once i got home and booted this game up for the first time. One of the best computing experiences of my life. Thank you Nintendo.
I love how relaxing this piece is. Most other tracks are so moody/dark. Would deliberately spend more time In Brinstar than needed just to listen to it.
Finally I found it One of my friends did a PowerPoint presentation about space related stuff in class today and he played this theme in the background And I think he and I are like the only ones who knew what it was
This theme reminds me of the old days of RUclips. 2010, 2011 when a majority Let's Plays basically where 240p records of someone talking into a cheap headset playing an emulator on his laptop. You knew it was a laptop since the you could here the sound of the key strokes. The videos were 10 minutes, the thumbnails were autogenerated by RUclips and the title was just "Let's Play #01" ...or what ever part it was.
I used to go to the jungle floor just to play this song.. lol and save the lil speed running animal that shows you how to get out of that trap you fall into while speed running. You gotta jump with him so he can get out too =] TOP game fosho. What was YOUR favorite level?
+jred23pyro The aliens you are talking about are, the Dachoras (ostrich type running alien) and the Etecoons who did the wall jump which when I was a kid, I could almost never figure out.
Some of the instruments or sounds they use in this have such like... SNES vibes across so many games. That sort of small drum sound reminds me of Secret of Mana and some of the synths are common in so many games. It's nostalgia for a bunch of things at once.
At last Super Metroid turns 30! Before there was Resident Evil this was one of my favorite games as a kid. This theme represents great excitement when your heading to the next level. The good old fashioned days. Back when games had less or no dialogue certain games had no save points. Back when Gamestop used to be called Babbage's. Those where the good times. 30 years later this game is a true masterpiece!

Has the sound of "Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger" to it, love it! Just started playing the game again on emulator. Last time i played it i was around 10 years old or so, im 34 now lol...be 35 in 4 days.
Fair enough...but as I said, my point still stands. Each hold a respectable place in their consecutive genres and are near the pinnacle of video games.

That moment when the elevator is coming down slowly, Samus staring at the screen, then she suddenly starts busting it down sexual style something fierce 😮😩😳

that elevator fade-in instantly became one of my all-time favourite gaming moments after I first experienced it.

When you first arrive in Brinstar with the normal suit and this music starts playing, you know you are in a cool place!!!
It still surprises me, to this day, the capabilities of the Super Nintendo.

The Brinstar theme that Nintendo forgot about.

Even the one for Metroid Prime's multiplayer mode.

It's in Samus Returns!

me: try's to sleep
my brain: m e t r o i d o s t
This soundtrack is keeping me up from going to sleep, I actually never knew how much this OST is a classic.
Super Metroid definitely has the best soundtrack out of all the games. Prime is probably the 2nd best music wise.
JP 2 snes too
+Derp Lord Overall I would agree, but Kraid's Lair theme from the first game is the best individual track, for me anyway.
TheOdMan Same, but I like the Zero Mission version better.

when I was little I use to call brinstar the party place
Yeeahh!
Absolutely
I called it grass place
I call it kraids garden
Reason why i called it kraids garden
Reason 1: its a vegetated zone
Reason 2: kraid lives here

The Super Nintendo sound chip is amazing
