Funnily enough, Kratos not being chosen as one of the 300 makes perfect sense, when picking his 300 soldiers, Leonidas only picked ones with male heirs so that their bloodlines could continue since he knew all 300 of them would die, and kratos’s only child at the time was a daughter, so he would have been passed over as part of the 300
I wonder how King Leonidas would have felt about what happened to Kratos after that? Not just his deal with Aries but the death of his wife and daughter, the destruction of Sparta, Kratos' spiral into vengeful, endless rage, and his eventual redemption in his travels in new lands.
The more obvious reason is that Kratos was tasked by the gods to repel the Persian on another coast and (indirectly) avenge Leonidas by killing both Xerxes and his pet basilisk.

Seems to be some confusion among some people about the reference to Leonidas. The "Hot Gates" is Thermopylae, the place where Leonidas and his 300 (plus several thousand others) made their stand. That's what Thermopylae means. Literally Thermo: Hot and Pylae: Gates.
Only 480s kids will get this
At the last stand at Θερμοπύλες was only Leonidas the 300 and a handful of others to slow down the persians and kill as many as possible

Personally never played the games, but that's the sound of a man who's changed despite the hardships of his life. Really touching moment
Can we all appreciate that despite Spartans having hellish childhoods to become brutal warriors, Atreus of Sparta was still a happy compassionate man whom Kratos respected. Now I truly see why he named his son after him.
Bruh, I did not expect Mimir and Kratos to start randomly giving an A level drama lesson.
They are educated folks, we tends to forget Spartan actually as educated as the Athens
I also liked when Kratos referenced the Iliad being his favorite poem and him want to eat olives again.
It was really nice they added that detail about King Leonidas. You can imagine Kratos back then, being stricken with regret for not being their with his king, dying with honor against an army of ten thousands. I wonder how young he was during that time

Kratos is such a good father. He believes in his son’s fate, to be a hero of the realms instead of a murderer❤️🔥
@Jack Smith it seems he has something between Vergil
It's kind of the opposite I think, Kratos struggles against fate and prophecy and wanted to raise his son differently to how he himself was raised. He doesn't want to raise another Kratos, he wants to raise Atreus right.
Is so emotionally inspiring he admires his soldier side

There's several instances in god of war 2 where you'll get a mini boss battle because people immediately recognize you as the ghost of sparta and a fallen god. So they think that by killing you, they'll get an audience with The Fates. So even if Kratos had nothing to do with an individual, they would go out of their way to try and kill him.

I'm pretty sure Kratos just broke the 4th wall talking about the sequence shot style of the game, just where they were talking about Greek theater...
That was brilliant. God of War is in a class of its own in all aspects.
So is it safe to say kratos was born before 500 bce since he mentioned fighting with Leonidas and is living in nordic pantheon before it was written down until the 8th century to 1000 ad, so maybe around 500-600 ad is when the Nordic god of war games take place , I think Kratos is easily over 1000 years old by this time .
I love that just little bit of defensiveness that creeps into Kratos' voice talking about greek plays, I'm a theatre student and I know what it means to defend such a niche part of theatre tradition. And knowing that this big guy probably cried at those plays along with everyone else.
2:09 Spartans never die; they're just missing in action.

There's so many memorable conversations in this game
Wow. Seeing Kratos’ development as a man from the first franchise to this one is mind blowing. Still an absolutely brutal fighter but 1,000x more wise. You can tell he’s really learned from all his past experiences and mistakes
He had Faye to help him. I doubt anyone but her could have cooled the raging flames of Kratos' constant anger - and it still took her over ten years to really do it.
Love the mention of Oedipus the King
Also it's so weird seeing the guy who used the naked woman spine to hold up a gate all of a sudden having emotions 😂
As Mimir said at some point in the previous game, The Greek Pantheon deserve it. Most of his rage was left there, even if some is still around.
@@ricardoj376 she was a slave of Poseidon's. One of the innocents that Kratos refers to when he says "and many who did not".
@@alejandromelendez1609 To be fair if one thing is accurate there is Kratos absolute disdain for slaves. Sparta was infamous for its slave population, which even for Greek standards at the time was massive. Big enough to have a unique designation that has survived to this day; _εἵλωτες_ (helots). It's the whole reason they could afford such a peculiar take on the art of war. Helots were quite literally the base of the economy that keep Sparta running in terms of agriculture and manual labor. They were so incredibly many that Spartiates (Spartan full citizens) were constantly paranoid about them rebelling and designed the _κρυπτεία_ (krupteía) a form of secret police force to keep them in obedient submission. Young spartiate men would sneak out into the countryside at night to murder and terrorize helots, targeting those who looked especially strong and/or would be natural fighters if things started getting out of hand

Oddly, there is a pre order costume in gow Ascension called armor of Leonidas tribute of 300
God of War takes place in the "real" world, when Zeus destroys Sparta in GOW II it does roughly correlate to the real life catastrophic earthquake that destroyed Sparta. The hot gates of thermopylae seem to be where he called upon ares. Interesting
I like how the thumbnail is just Spartan yells
I wonder if there will be another God of war after this one
yes, just not in the norse area. this one was the final part of the norse duology
We want a movie on Kratos🔥🔥
The new games are literally more cinematic than actual movies.
No thanks i dont want another Uncharted
Yes and no
A properly made movie based on GoW would be the coolest thing in the world. But, looking back almost all movies based on games turned out sucky. So no, the game is enough, at least for me.
@Xenodroidz Kratos is black
Racist
@Xenodroidz Christopher judge "...... boi"
@@xenodroidz3086 wow racist
An Oedipus Rex reference. Now THAT is an interesting minor detail. Love that A LOT.
The battle of Thermopoli (The Battle of 300) was a real battle. Wasn't quite like what happened in the 300 movie and comic, but it did occur.
In the actual account, there were more than just the Spartans there, and they used the land configuration to hold off the Persians. Persian wicker sheilds and short swords were no match against Spartans who were encased in bronze, and the Spartans had wedged themselves in a pass that was bottlenecked, which made it impossible for the Persians to flank them, or face them down at the same time.
Each spartan had an assistant or two that would assist them in battle
They had other Greek fighters at the time aside from the arcadians
Kratos not training Atreus like a Spartan and sparing him the finer details and traditions of how they would not only get starved and beaten, but also sodomized was showing of how Kratos is a good father.
Clarification: the Agōgē also included getting sodomized by your teacher in a pederastic relationship of student and teacher which was pretty messed up, in my opinion.
Apparently the reasoning(and I could be wrong) was it made them stronger and more focused on training versus pursuing girls/women when they became teenagers.
So they were raped?
Imagine if kratos was there with the 300 even before he sold his soul to ares he was a almost unstoppable man he would have changed the outcome of the fight
Imagine if that was when he made the deal with Ares, now that would be legendary
@@kingofhearts3185 him and leonidas the last 2 standing and he sells himself to ares that would be a awesome what if story in God of war
2:51 is Kratos defending the one take camera?
I swear, they need to make an audio book of both GOW games with all these talks and stories between the characters
In God of War Ascension, we find the body of Archimedes. According to the history books, Archimedes died in 212 BC.
In Chains of Olympus, he’s shown fighting the Persians at Attica, which would’ve been between 492 - 490 BC.
The Battle of Thermopylae was fought in 480 BC. So Kratos knowing Leonidas is the least weird thing on this list.
At another point in this game, Mimir mentions Nimue, one of the Ladies of the Lake in the Arthurian legends. The Arthurian legends take place during the Dark Ages, but even if you assume Nimue is immortal, at some point during a boat story Mimir mentions Macbeth.
What year is this?
973 AD would be my guess
Neat
You know i would love a game where its around the time where kratos was child or teen. Set during the Pelponnessian wars and around time of the 300. But your playing as some unknown Spartan. Idk i just think it would be cool to have that and have all the greek mythology elements mixed into it.
1:35 😄 HA! well done groa! 😁
I thought Kratos was much more ancient than King Leonidas.,because the Spartans are the descendents of Hercules and,ey!!! I don't know .
Its not really known but I believe King Leonidas was there at the time Kratos served in the army. In God of War ascension the Furies casted an Illusion to mess with Kratos and one of the Illusions was him meeting King of Sparta (Leonidas also known as the King of Sparta). The interesting fact about this is that even though he was not referenced as King Leonidas in game, his appearance is identical to Leonidas. So it is possible Kratos may have met Leonidas, either that or this was a different identical King.
@@w.c2255 well.... in chains of olympus Kratos actually fight the persians and kill the king
@@w.c2255 It could have been Leonidas or the character designers used his likeness
You could pick multiple things to bring up that aren't right. Like the depictions of the Spartans in general. They're always shown as real tan with dark hair like the Ionian Greeks but the Spartans are Dorian Greeks and the Dorians were known to be fairer toned with blue eyes or red and blo nde hair.
He wasn't referring to the Battle of Thermopylae. He was referring to his attempted suicide after the God's refused to take away his visions of the murder of his daughter and wife.
He does refer to the Battle of Thermopylae in this video, listen back for what he says about the hot gates.
@@GodWorksOut He attempts suicide at the hot gates.
@@GodWorksOut yeah he says he wished he had died there for some time but no longer.
God I fucking love what they’ve done with these games. This is peak gaming.
The OG Sparta!
Freya bitchin the whole game and Kratos been through 3x as worse as anyone in the game
There’s like 5 gods of war in Norse mythology 😂
