- Today I'm going to talk about my life in Bulgaria and how I feel after spending 3 years in a foreign country. Honestly I never expected to stay this long and I wanted to compile some of my favourite clips of my travels and put them into one video. I talk about the challenges involved in living as an expat in Bulgaria and explore the positives of my experience as a digital nomad in this part of Europe.

Great video. I'm American living here in Bulgaria and I have the same experience and view after living here. Its an amazing country, completly different than what I expected and heard. But living here is great..
Glad to hear that!
Me too, I’m from CA, now in Plovdiv for a year, Love It!
hi, where u stay in BG?
I would agree with you Jimmie as a black guy in bg ....Reggie
Right on brother. Bulgaria is a hidden gem that is unknown to the masses in other parts of Europe.
Having lived in the UK and Canada, I can safely say that among other things the Bulgarian Health system beats them all. Bulgarian physicians know their stuff and react quickly. No 13-month waiting list to see a Specialist in the UK (i.e. before Covid) and physicians who know who to read an EKG, unlike a Canadian hospital I was in. Too much to say but your are right on when you speak of the positive people, beautiful nature, excellent food retention of culture and history.
I hope it stays hidden. Mass migration and mass tourism is poison for the soul and identity of a country.
That only applies to foreigners. I am Bulgarian born and raised and almost all are but wipe a holes from Mezdra to Sofia. Jealous two faced ignorant pessimistic dummies.
What I've learned is that poor is relative when talking about countries. Italy is a rich country yet many more people are jobless, life is more expensive and therefore people are struggling more nowadays. While in Bulgaria there are many more opportunities & thanks to the low prices it's easier to live well even on a smaller income. My own homecountry, Estonia pays less than Bulgaria yet the prices are much higher. People see countries too black & white, there's so much more to living in a country than just their reputation! Richer goverment doesn't guarantee that they treat their people better. Thank yo for another informative video, I really enjoy the good vibes :)
Estonia - Luule Viilma! The way to love the life!
Jamal, you have done more for Bulgaria than anyone! Bulgaria is a hidden gem....will be very popular in the next 50 years....!
Happy to have you here Jamal! Wish you all the best and to continue educating us about what we miss by leaving or staying away from our beautiful country!
You are a good person, bro ! Welcome to Bulgaria
Thanks bro!
The Ministry of Culture should be pay for this videos, my frend.
are you kidding ? The BULGARIAN government is a JOKE they could care less about culture.
@@MrMartin-dh2co Maybe things will change after the elections coming up. 1300 years of history is incredible!

You know that the Bulgarian anthem says that Bulgaria is Eden on Earth!
The people that wrote it obviously hadn't been anywhere else
I’m came from the Philippines, people in Bulgaria 🇧🇬 are so nice, country is very beautiful and it’s my dream to live there ❤️
Love you man! I was so excited when I saw your video pop up when I opened my phone! Thank you for being so kind and honest with all of us 💖
I may say lesson 4: When you open your heart and you are surrounded by loving people you will see the world in a new, position and exiting way.
Do some Christmas videos. Show us what Christmas is like there.
Coming soon!
Bulgarian's don't normally celebrate christmas. Only in the past 30 years. Before the ONLY new year was celebrated ONLY. Christmas is a WESTERN holiday which CAME into Bulgaria from American culture. We even call christmas trees '' novogodishni elhi '' which means new year's trees.
new years is more important in bulgaria.

Jamal, your video is full of hard truths that you have personally experienced, sometimes people have to lose and they often do that alone. By watching this video I am now blessed with the wisdom of your travels and understanding. Thanks for your help! I am now going to start a business in Bulgaria.
If you are ever in a position that you cannot turn to anyone for help - reply to this comment. I live in Sofia. God bless you! :)
You are always welcome to come to a business and we will always treat you like our own yeah you will see the gypsies and the thugs but you also see beautiful country with brilliant sights and culture enjoy 😃
I have been there several times and agree with everything you say, the country was an eye opener for me and I fell in love with it instantly. The only problem I have is guys like you are letting the secret out, knock it off!
I just randomly found you in RUclips after reading the travel blogs of two Americans that moved in Bulgaria to live in. Thank you so much for promoting and describing the incredible beauty and charm of Bulgarian culture and life. I am Bulgarian living in California and seeing videos like yours makes me happy and nostalgic at the same time. Keep up with the good work and enjoy your life in Bulgaria 🇧🇬 Btw, I am from Plovdiv and you chose the best city to live in 🙌
Currently in the U.S.A. The moment my house sells, I'll be on a plane to Asenovgrad. Can't wait to get there.
Also, don't forget that Plovdiv is the oldest, continually lived in city in Europe. Come to think of it, you should tell people to stay away from Bulgaria. If they know just how great it is there, it'll get crowded and prices will rise.
Great to hear! Asenovgrad is an awesome place.
@@jonathanjones4566 We'd be honored to have you, Jonathan! I really like the city, it's like Plovdiv, but on a more relaxed pace, in the good way I'd hope. :)
Hey Jamal,
Thank you! I'm Bulgarian and I've been living in Berlin for the past 6 Years, i was thinking that i'll never return home, home was here for me. Recently i decided to return back home after I finish my studies and videos like your just bring me joy about my home country, made me appreciate the people, the nature, the love that one can find there. Yah, me too ,i feel the same .
Living in Spain for 16 years and now I'm going back to Bulgaria. Bulgaria is not poor as they say, it has incredible potential. This may be the following Switzerland.
Thanks Jamal. Looks and sounds fantastic! So glad I somehow stumbled upon Bulgaria online. Can't wait to visit - #1 on my list! If Bulgaria is half as good as I think it is, I will retire there (retirement date 25-April-2022).
Thank you so much for this video, man! I am Bulgarian, studying in Germany for the past 5 years. Thanks for reminding me why I love my country so much. To be honest, I was even able to learn a thing or two from you and I am very thankful for that. I love your idea/vision of inspiring more Bulgarians outside of the country to come back.
When you have time again, please come back and share some more experiences you have had in the past years. We are patiently waiting for you!
I am really loving your take on Bulgaria!!
I had the chance to visit a year ago and have been smitten ever since in fact, I'm looking to move there (when this damned Covid-19 thing subsides). Your exuberance strengthens my resolve. Thanks for your viewpoint!
I love Bulgaria, I married a Bulgarian 21 years ago, and we have visited many times. I hope to retire there.
C'mon bro, I have the exact same chair and it makes those noises 🤣🤣🤣 great video, as usual 👌🙃
Also, your ideas are impressive, logical and for the greater Good in general! I wish you luck!

Thank you! Will do!
Amazing video bro, Bulgaria is really one wonderful place, like a pies from the paradise.
Thanks mate!
i just want to say how much I enjoy watching your channel and seeing how a British person is so involved with our culture! Thank you so much for choosing our country and actually appreciating what it has to offer. I currently live in England and it has helped me see how amazing my country actually is and I couldn't describe with words how much I miss it!
Love you both !
Heei Jamal I forgot about you man, welcome back
I really like that you are so genuine and I agree 100% with your way of thinking. Поздрави от Лондон :)
i moved here as well after 20 years live in London and i absolutely love it to live in Bansko ;)
Every time I watch one of your videos, I feel great about my choice to stay here and not join the brain drain towards Western Europe and North America. No judgement of those who decided to leave, but we really need to remind ourselves that the Bulgarians that chose to stay here, also have a good reason to do so. Your mission to bring people back is truly heartwarming! We clearly cannot rely on our hipocritical and corrupt politicians to take it to heart to bring our people back. Весели празници, Джамал! Покажи на Запада как се прави сурвакница! 😁🙏🥰❄️
Bulgarian here.
I just found this channel and I think it's great! Not because you speak of Bulgaria in a good manner, but about the energy you put in to it.
I hope Bulgaria gives you as much as you give to it.
You're a Bulgarian now.
Keep up the good work, bro!
Dude... u convinced me!
Thanks for your observer's opinion about Bulgaria. Sadly, many Bulgarians don't appreciate what treasure they have...
As a Bulgarian, this makes me really happy :))
Very funny, because of your videos, you make us kom back from another country. That's beautiful .
You are truly inspiring, because your opinion on Bulgaria is so genuine and it is convincing too, because noone can say you are being biased. As a young Bulgarian living now outside of Bulgaria, I really saw, what I actually have as values that this country has taught me and how important is to be honest so that people will always approach you, if they want to. In my opinion that's the unique thing about Bulgaria. Not many people know much about our culture or the culture in the Balkans in general and it's quite the opposite, they know us mostly for bad. I think, if you are open, as you are, you will truly find, what you need there. Respect👏
Thanks for the kind and in-depth comment mate. I'm happy you enjoyed it and yep it's all about being open and honest (without agenda) and things will stay positive.
OMG Jamal I love to watch how you see my country and my home city. I wish we (Bulgarians I mean) to think like you. I always feel emotional when you talk about Bulgaria. I never encourage my son to go and live in other country because we have everything in Bulgaria. He is travelling a lot but living in Sofia. I just can't wait to when the time will come for me to come back forever. We need people like you and I think they really have to pay you for advertising the life in Bulgaria. I wish you all the best!🍀❤️
Thank you for the kind words and I'm happy it's bringing value to you. Good to hear people are staying and improving the quality of life here too!
Bulgaria is a beautiful country and if someone wants to visit it.
They wont make a mistake.
But its really interesting how people appreciate our country more than us.
That's something that I want to see behind our backs at the past.
Thank you so much for this videos.
You are the best foreigner I have ever seen.
Hello we hope all is well? and we hope you have a great weekend
We just want to take this opportunity to say Happy Holidays

Hi Jamal, thanks this video is so refreshing. I have just bought a house in Bulgaria and I can't wait to get there. I see you haven't posted in a year and wondered how life is for you now? Are you still enjoying it?
Hey, happy to hear you've joined the expats here in BG. Yep I'm still here and loving life. I'm just taking a break from RUclips that's all.

Hello to our Bulgarian bros FROM Greece.
My friend sounds like a good a idea to do more content about online business.I think people don’t trust this kind of business could bring good money!
Good luck to you!!!
I visited Bulgaria in October 2019 and fell in love with it. How can a semi-retired artist, who is single, settle in Bulgaria and build social and business connections?
Try the expats in plovdiv/sofia facebook groups. That's where I started.
Hey, you should definately visit: Trigrad, Trigradsko jdrelo, Yagodina cave, Eagle's eye, Devil's throat cave (all can be seen in one day), also - Bojentsi village, Leshten, Kovatchevitsa. And more and more... There are so many amazing places here :)
Wow, we miss your enthusiasm, Jamal :) Hope you are ok
I’m so excited for you when you learn Bulgarian to discover Bulgarian literature too! You should start with Ivan Vazov, he’s our most popular writer and my favourite writer is Nikola Vaptsarov.
I'm so excited to delve into it too! Hopefully I'll be getting some Bulgarian books for Christmas as I'm studying hard.
You should absolutely get into the old classics of ours, but please, keep in mind - many of them have specific archaic dialects or words that are representative of the different regions of the country. For example, Yordan Yovkov writes a lot about Dobrudzha (North Eastern) and Elin Pelin writes about the Shopski Region (Sofia, Kyustendil, Pernik). I personally like Nikolai Haytov that writes about the Rhodopes mountains.
I could bet Rhyes' first "Horo" will be better than my 20th and sure enough here it is :D
...and wow 95%. Honestly I would be happy with 80 but I'll take that :)
Cheers brother!
Edit: I am one of your targeted audience. I live in Boston, Massachusetts for the last 8 years. :)
Haha don't worry I practiced with youtube videos before my first "public" horo haha. Thanks for the comment!
Love the video made me cried

Living in London for the past 14 years of my life

Well done

You are great
Thank you for the kind words and I'm happy the video gave such a response! Keep positive and working hard and I'm sure in time you'll be able to return and bring lots of value to Bulgaria. Sending positive vibes!
Leave then, I'm 1/2 English/Bulgarian, I was miserable in London (and i'm from Hertfordshire), now 10 years after moving back to Sofia I have beautiful house and 3 apartments, my standard of living is miles better than it was in the UK, i'd have to be multi-millionaire in the UK to live like I do here. Of course it's not all roses here, it's full of racist, homophobic peasants, but not so much in Sofia or Plovdiv and you learn to isolate yourself from them.
@@alexanderstefanov6474 -
Speak out against the racists and homophobes, campaign against them, condemn their beliefs and teach/encourage/educate/ them to be better.
Thank you for that video! I’m from Plovdiv and currently live in Toronto , Canada. My boyfriend is from Jamaica. He is afraid people in Bulgaria are racist and doesn’t want to visit Bulgaria!
@ Jamal ,Bro as usual excellent content. Please tell me how is the job market for certified people.Thnx
Honestly unsure about certifications and the market sorry!
Jamal how is the inflation down there now? Is it still a good idea to relocate there for work?

I SAW YOUR VIDEO ABOUT RACISM AND BULGARIA AND I JUST WANT TO LET YOU KNOW THAT AS A BULGARIAN I AM TOTALLY ASHAMED OF MY PEOPLE AND MY CULTURE WHENEVER THEY DO ANYTHING RACIST. WHEN SOME BULGARIANS MAKE RACIST COMMENTS OR HATE ON OTHERS I AM TOTALLY DISUGSTED AND SOMETIMES I WISH I WASN'T BULGARIAN AT ALL.
I AM DEEPLY DISGUSTED BY THE HATEFUL PART OF BULGARIAN SOCIETY. LOVE YOU BROTHER
Interesting fac: Like you said, the water in Black sea is not "dirty". The low % of salt gives the opportunity for planktons, seagrass, seaweed that blooms and other small sea creatures to live. If you take a glass and fill it with water from our sea it would be crystal clear, but when you swim the visibility often doesn't go further than 8-10m.
after that Horo dancing ... mate you are half bulgarian now for me even 3/4 bulgarian
PLOVDIV versus VELIKO TARNOVO as a permanent expatriate base is a good enough subject, and VELIKO TARNOVO is nearer by taxi journey to Bucharest (OTP) Airport; (connecting "Pegasus" pair with SAW Airport, Turkey)!
I am from Bulgaria
Cheers and thanks for the video! Situation in Bulgaria is really bad as number one corrupted country in EU. If you have the opportunity sure it's your place.
Happy you liked it. Everyone has an opportunity as we have the internet. The future is bright for Bulgaria!
How are the covid regulations in Bulgaria? Are they strict? Details would be great, thank you !
Moderate tbh. Masks in stores/public buildings and bars/restaurants are closed Aside that it appears less strict than the rest of Europe.
Hi mate I am just curious if you still living there? Hope you are well!

DUDE! YES!
That's exactly why I am willing to go to the Eastern Europe! I'm brazillian and can say to you that is almost the same here, the west will become a distopian nightmare in the next decades.
You are very funny
Totally agree on your points on the UK. The majority seem disingenuous & fake here.. Bulgaria looks awesome however!
Are you miss UK?
Nope not at all
I think that only when foreigners come here that's when they admit it's not that bad or as bad as they thought... : /
@Thracian Princess I've lived abroad and traveled a bit so I can see that the west is not what they tell us on the media... otherwise there is what to see in every country.
Only 1 remark: ''4 hours from Turkey'' Are you riding camels to Turkey :D ~170km 2 hours tops, 4 hours to Istanbul
more likely. ;)
It's seems like you're making a living as a 'digital nomad'
However, life in Bulgaria is very hard if you're working in a job where you are somewhat dependent on others, or on government agencies, as everyone and their grandma is corrupt to the bones.
Glad you find your luck though.
Like that guy. You realise how good country Bulgaria is, but most bulgarians don't.
How is it in terms of Covid restrictions? I am searching for a country in Europe to move to that is not following all those mad restrictive covid measures (lockdown, vaccine)
thank you
No stores/shops, masks inside and no clubs/restaurants. Slightly lighter than UK/Ger/France but still restrictive.
Vaccines are fully voluntary, though and small neighborhood stores are still open, in addition to the big super markets.
Aha, there are more evicted ppl in UK and chased by the bailiff than in Bulgaria. So they shouldn´t attack Bulgaria to much.
No
