    My family and friends are from Fort Myers beach so we spend a good portion of the time there every year, staying on the beach. This is absolutely devastating. Words can’t even describe. A place we love so much with such an amazing community. It’s never going to be the same. I’ve been coming here my entire life and I still can’t even comprehend that this is actually happening. My heart is broken. This is our second home and it’s so upsetting to see all the places we know and love just gone.

    Same thing we had in St. Maarten in Hurricane Luis in 1995, boats piled up on roadways...out of 1,200 boats in Simpson Bay Lagoon, almost 1,000 were damaged, destroyed or sunk. My family’s sailboat sunk, we were living in a house by then. The wind sounded like a speeding freight train, the house was shaking and the fully boarded up sliding glass doors were actually undulating. Out of 12 hurricanes I’ve been in that was the worst. My thoughts go out to the people of Fort Myers Beach and environs.

      I was a 9 year old in 1972 when Agnes came through Virginia. And while we don't have lots of strong Hurricanes or Tropical Storms, our family evacuated to a family member's home that was on a higher elevation & sturdier. I can't remember how many were there, but there were many of us kids that had trouble sleeping because of the howl of the wind. When it was safe to go home. We were so lucky because while it flooded, the waters stopped short of our home & the search teams were happy to see us. That was just a tiny storm compared to Luis or Ian, but it was enough to teach me to NEVER take these storms lightly. Some people get lucky 'riding out' storms, but they have no idea how bad it truly can get. :p

    • @gizmo8361
      @gizmo8361 Год назад

      @@tenerifecats6652 yes they can get so so bad, some people just don’t know. It’s hard to evacuate a 37 sq mile island so when hurricanes come through it’s just to hang on for dear life. I wasn’t there for Irma but that one was a monster.

    Why do people live in flimsy mobile homes in hurricane zones then act surprised when they end up in the swamp clinging to a tree? And why do the news reporters always act all breathless and say "I've never seen this before in my life." Do they live under a rock? Hurricanes in Florida are commonplace and they always leave boats strewn about the streets. There's literally a HUGE used boat part / boat restoration industry in Florida that brokers hurricane insurance - salvaged yachts in that area.

      Well, yeah, she's maybe 23. I'm sixty something, and have seen similar sights multiple times in my life -- Donna, Carla, Beulah, Allen, Claudette, Rita, Harvey, etc etc. Plus was raised just down the road from Galveston, and those pics of 40 foot high mountains of kindling and brick pieces that used to be buildings kind of set the bar for what to expect from a hurricane. Why is it that people can NOT know the drill: board up, set your furniture up as high as you can get it, gather together your important documents and valuables, and EVACUATE if you're on the beach or in a low spot. Nobody should have been on Sanibel, Captiva, Pine Isle, or Ft. Myers beach.

    Why not build houses of bricks or concrete? They would withstand any hurricane.

    Every hurricane there are the people who don't want to leave, and the ones who blames the government.
