  • NO OVEN? NO PROBLEM POWDERCOATING!
    This video has been the most popular video on my channel and I have to thank you all for being interested in my take on doing powder coating with limited tools.
    I don't have an oven for this video and use a propane radiant heater to get the wheel to 400F so that the powder is cured. I'll revisit this later with a custom sized oven at some point.
    Thanks for watching the video!

    Cool improv. I powder coated my Jeep bumper by stacking two drums and putting two oven elements inside. I did the rims by building a cinderblock oven and a oven element on the sand poured in the center.

    Dude that’s pretty cool man!!! Keep them videos coming!! How long did you expose the wheel to heat as you rotated it? Just when it looked glossy enough basically. I noticed that you could basically see the heating element reflecting and then you rotated. About right?

    • @OffGridOverLander
      @OffGridOverLander  6 лет назад +1

      blueswasted6768 Yes, I let it sit long enough in one spot to let it flow out and then sit for a minute or two. The steel is really thick so I knew that it would retain most of the heat for the post-flow cure time.

    Grab an older electric oven. I wired one up outside my shop under the stairs and i built an extension box so i can open the door and have heat. I'm going to start grabbing electric heating elements to make a larger oven out of an old small walk in freezer. Big enough to do motorcycle frame easily.

      just ditch the insulation, replace it all with mineral wool good to go. i build mine out of upright serving carts. the things that hold like 12 baking trays. i just trim em out with sheet metal and mineral wool. pick the carts up from the prison auction for like 15 bucks a pop.

    • @ClimptonDiddlehopper

      i was too cheap to use sheet metal so my last one i built with Hardie Panel {not backer board} this stuff is cement/fiberglass 1/4" thick 4x8 sheets exterior paneling for houses. Still used mineral wool batts for the insulation. I do a lot of dirt bike frames and stuff like that. the oven stays cool to the touch on the outside.

      I thought about the heat gun also but I think it would blow off the powder. How about using a map or propane torch to heat it up 1st then powder coating hot, then putting the propane heater on it?

  • @Couch_engineer
    @Couch_engineer 5 лет назад

    Cool man. I’m just learning about powder coating. I thought you had to heat the part first and then apply the powder when it’s cool to the touch. Did your method last? Thanks

    • @OffGridOverLander
      @OffGridOverLander  5 лет назад +1

      Leo C You don’t always have to preheat the workpiece. If your workpiece can still conduct electricity then you don’t have to. If you are working with multiple coats of powder, or a workpiece that is not conductive then you will have to hot-flock, which is what you just described. As far as durability, I will address that when I break that wheel apart next time.

  • @12vLife
    @12vLife 5 лет назад +1

    I've wondered if just blow torching the rim before and putting the can in really hot near boiling water will help fuse the paint better to the metal.

    • @OffGridOverLander
      @OffGridOverLander  5 лет назад

      NoSunBeach If you’re going to use a torch make sure to get the metal good and hot first because it will leave moisture on the metal. It theory it could be trapped below the powder if it melts before the metal gets hot enough for it to bond.

  • @timothypsimer9252
    @timothypsimer9252 6 лет назад +1

    I thought you were going to add coals and light them in the barrel to get the wheel to temperature, would not have taken too long. The outside with the propane is brilliant. Work the coals and the propane and you will have a cure to last.

    Let me tell you something Mister, You are the Man! I never thought of that, a propane heater. Like a fool I would have over spent on a lamp. All I want to do is my bike. Does it leave any seem lines between the powder and new run out after the finish?

    • @OffGridOverLander
      @OffGridOverLander  5 лет назад

      capeman10 If you’re trying to do multiple coats on metal you’ll most likely have to hot flock it. Basically just keep the frame hot and spray it with the next layer. I’ve done that with other parts that I haven’t videoed.

    • @OffGridOverLander
      @OffGridOverLander  5 лет назад

      capeman10 If all you are doing is a bike frame, the metal should heat up quicker than this wheel did. You can also try using a good heat gun.

    What kind of medium were u using that u void have your gand that close? I need to do the inside of a t roof for my Camaro as I need to replace that roof section, s (the s3ction is off the car) so this gives me what I needed to know to get the inside sections coated:) you can also use high temp tape for this so you can mask it off and not worry about the heat!

    • @vickikgibson9470
      @vickikgibson9470 4 года назад +1

      @@OffGridOverLander wow fast reply! I have another q. How long did u put the heater on each section? Normal temp is around 400 f for cure. That takes about 30 min, I am told, so how long do you put the heater on the rim? Of course thinner metal will get hotter much faster. Might be hard to regulate, but not impossible, just watch it very close?

    • @OffGridOverLander
      @OffGridOverLander  4 года назад

      Vicki k Gibson with as thick as my rim was I just watched it and rotated it about an inch at a time when I saw that it had melted, between the metal retaining the heat and slow rotation I figured I hit the 10-15 min needed for my powder.

    • @OffGridOverLander

    Powder coating isn't just to melt the color on it and that's it, that won't be hardened and last in scratches.... might as well just painted them for same scratch resistance.... you need to heat them for much more time and much higher temperature or it's really just barely melted powder paint.

    • @OffGridOverLander
      @OffGridOverLander  4 года назад

      Sorry for the late reply, I wouldn’t do them while they are on the vehicle, mainly for risk of fire. Too many different materials on vehicles with different melting points, even if a part doesn’t burn it could still be destroyed by high heat.

    How did you keep the powder from blowing off?

    • @OffGridOverLander
      @OffGridOverLander  5 лет назад

      ConDragon10 It wasn’t too windy that day and it generally takes compressed air to blow the powder off. Have to remember that it is static charged with electricity so it wants to stay on the part.

    • @OffGridOverLander
      @OffGridOverLander  5 лет назад +1

      It wasn't that windy that day, but it takes more than a gentle breeze to get it to blow off. If you're using the static charge type of application it'll take compressed air to usually dislodge it from the part being coated. If you're hot flocking it then you'll have to work with the breeze if you have any to get the powder on the part. Hot flocking is usually reserved for parts that already have a coat or two of powder already on them, or parts that aren't electrically conductive.

    hello unfortunately this proses will not stand the test of time at all.... the bake time for gloss black is around 20 mins at 170 degrees, the timer starts when the part reaches 170. all you are doing there is making the powder gloss over, it will not bond to the surface and will have no durability , this will flake off or crack in a very short period of time. but I would love to be proven wrong :) I suppose your doing the inside of the wheel to get a good clean surface to mount the tyre,? I think if you used it for the wheel face stone chips and weather would take that off within weeks.......just an after thought what temp does the wheel get to roughly?

    • @sinformant

    • @TheBlackSheepprojects
      @TheBlackSheepprojects 6 лет назад

      Ye that's right if it works for the application and you have had no issues .......then it's a good work around for not having an oven just be mindful about durability when using the same process in different applications:)

    • @southerntiersupermoto884
      @southerntiersupermoto884 6 лет назад +1

      To be honest, I think this could be used to do it correctly, just set it up so that the heater in heating the wheel from the inside, that way the actual wheel is heating up, not just the powder, and then just let it sit in each area for the necessary time, 10 minutes per section or whatever the powder requires

    • @TheBlackSheepprojects
      @TheBlackSheepprojects 6 лет назад

      Ye that's a good point pal I think that would work..... enen get a couple of heater heads in there so the part gets to temp quicker and evenly :)

    • @OffGridOverLander
      @OffGridOverLander  6 лет назад +2

      Total cure time was about 15 min at each point before I turned the wheel. Total cure time took about 2 hrs so the video was sped up considerably. I won't be using gloss on the outside of the wheel so I'm not sure how it will look when it finally gets to temp, we'll just have to see when I get there.
