I did it similarly in shop class 40 years ago. We dipped a hot part in a fluidized bed (a can with air pumped in the base).

After checking into the only place in St. Louis that resurfaces cast iron sinks, I was truly disheartened at the price. THEN . . . I remembered the crew I watched coating a claw foot bathtub . . . Looking back through several years of old log books from my OTR days I found them and called to ask the supervisor if he entertained silly questions. He politely listened to me and said he would ponder my plight and took my number. To my astonishment he called the next evening and offered a solution. As he was sure I was not financially able to afford a gimbal or a forklift, he suggested putting together two tripod A-frames and forwarded me a sketch showing a sink positioned between them. And while a regular propane torch would eventually get the thing hot, he suggested using a Map bottle instead. He also told me to use a syringe to sprinkle the powder at those pesky little mars and squeegee the liquid from the surface before it set up.
Funny thing he added before he signed off . . . I gave him an idea how he could beautify his grand mothers farm sink that was in about the same shape as my double sink with drains on both sides.
If I ever get the courage to start up this project I will be sure to also video it. 😊

We used to powercoat parts at high school by heating them with a torch, then dipping the part into the powder. the finish look pretty ordinary but it was very durable.

Great Idea using the oven for storage!🏁

Try thermoplastic powder and you can dip a hot part to coat

I liked your heat gun method but the torch is probably even better. Im gonna try this on my roll cage. Preheat with the torch , spray on powder, then lightly torch it again

I enjoyed the experiment. I seen a guy paint an entire ibeam with torches and a powder coat gun. He had helpers heat the metal while he sprayed.
If you do more experiments I’d like to see one where powder coats are applied to things like chrome, or other metals that have primer or even a factory coat , just to see how the paint reacts…

    Nice, very interesting!
Id like to see a panty hose part done then put in oven, that way have more control of the sprinkling and then controlled heating...
Maybe use a sifter/shaker or flour sifter....

A guy i used to hang out with who had previously had a powdercoating shop liked to "burn off" his stuff in the oven, to get any oils or residues out of the part. He would coat them while they were still warm, but not enuf to pre-melt the powder. He said that helped it stick better, but allowed the powder to "flow-out" more evenly in the oven.

That's called hot-gassing, and I agree completely, though I generally like to spray the powder on a part that's completely hot. Makes it stick into areas that the Faraday-cage-effect likes to fight you.

That reminds me of the expanded metal patio furniture a former girlfriend wanted me to pcoat. I was like "Nope, that's just a big ol' pile of faraday cages." Lol

I love these videos lol. The weird experimenter in me loves them.
Also look into brine shrimp nets (and similar small micron nets) as they’d probably do a good job getting a more consistent dispersal on the powder

Try using a powder sugar sprinkler (for baking) or a real fine metal strainer a small size

That discoloration is just an oxide layer forming on the surface. Look up "tempering colors of steel".

another garden product that would probably work better for the coating....one of the powder blowers for DE....at the very least, it is a container so it would be less messy....great video.

@@RedlineStands do you think you could make another video using different powdering techniques? Like some barbershop powder dusters, garden dusters and some other sort of powder dispersing cheap products?

Also try to get the part to the accurate temperature

I wonder if the "durability" you experienced between the two powder coated parts was because of the surface profile rather than the actual toughness of the material. I would expect the toughness to be the same regardless of the heating method.
The electrostatic sprayed part has a much smoother finish than the pantyhose part. The smooth finish of the sprayed part may contribute to continuous scratches while the relatively rougher surface of the pantyhose part may have allowed the screwdriver to, more or less, skip over some of the surface and give the appearance of a higher toughness. I don't really know, just a thought that popped into my head as I watched the video.
