It’s interesting, I have a different interpretation of the Black Swordsman arc. I don’t see it as Miura showing us Guts’s brutality, I think it’s meant to highlight Guts’s immense empathy even when he’s in a “by any means necessary” mindset. In that stretch of chapters he reminds me of a Griffith with extra empathy, fighting for the sake of the dead to fulfill a dream. But whereas Griffith didn’t mind those who were trampled beneath him, Guts is shown time and time again to mourn those he inadvertently hurts. It’s a bit subtle and more evident upon re-reading, but I do think it’s a very important and not well understood aspect of the Black Swordsman arc~ Also regarding Griffith, I don’t think he was swayed by the Godhand by being reminded of his dream, even though that seems like the clear thing that happened. Instead, they reminded him of the guilt he felt, that if he *didn’t* follow the path he’d paved for himself, he’d be letting down those that died for his sake. He was swayed more by the dreams of his subordinates than the dream of his childhood. At least, that’s my interpretation anyway I hate to shamelessly self plug, but I do have videos on both those topics 🤗 no need to check them out, I’m just putting it out there in case you’d be curious to hear more about my thoughts (no hard feelings either way) Can’t wait to hear more of your thoughts as you continue the series!!
