- ▶▬ ABOUT THIS VIDEO▬
Sometimes you gotta do with the equipment you have on hand. This is a very unusual way to dig a hole for a septic tank but our ground was very hard and dry from many weeks of no rain. Danny uses a post hole auger to dig some of the hole for a septic tank for our off grid cabin.

When we get older, we have to work smarter, not harder. You and your wife are the perfect example of this! Right on.... Thank you
Smarter would have been borrowing the neighbors backhoe when it was offered . 😬 I admire the hard work ethic. 👍🏻
@@landonpryor8907 not if you have one already .this is smarter 🤔
WOW that tool on the tractor works wonders! Helps save a lot of time and energy lol... I never forget me and my mom dug a fifty foot by 4 ft long trench in the mountain for my auntie Bell. We did it with a pick shovels and that was dire lol .. 12 hr day's and three days long! We were exhausted literally! I'll never forget it as long as I live. The reason we couldn't use a bobcat or tractor is because it was up and down the side of the mountain it was to steap. I'm still exhausted from that job lol....
That worked fantastic! Those pallet forks are a godsend.
My daughter Shannon and I watch all of y’alls awesome videos. Your auger application is a stroke of genius. Thanks for the creative demo.
Been a long time since I have seen a small one tank septic system. Looking forward to following your progress.
Great idea. Made digging way easier.
thank you for the help and info
I know just where you coming from I dug my first two hugalkutur beds by hand in hard clay my neighbor came to my rescue good neighbors are a God Send
How deep should the tank be in
That grounds drier than a popcorn fart! 😂🤣
Good morning. Give it a try! If it works the way you are thinking it will won't that be great! Digging that out by hand would have taken an incredible amount of time and energy. You are absolutely right. Every little bit is progress. You did good so far with what you have. Wait on some rain. You did it! Woo hoo! I bet you are both so happy to have this part over and done with. That was about as close as it gets for fitting. Lol. Have a blessed day. Thanks.
Enjoyed the video.. waiting to watch part 2
That's how the dirt is at our Arkansas place-- It's like clay brick!
Amazing job Danny. I hope your heart and muscles, back and everything are ok.
Hope rain comes for you all soon. That dirts thirsty. Determination gets everything done. Great job🌻
I bought My auger for planting small trees and larger bushes.
It's cheaper and less painful than back surgery.
Bless your heart Danny...what a big job.
Thank you!
I use a hand held ice auger to dig post holes. I can get about 2 1/2 ft deep with that.
Nicely done except for the tank choice. The tank appears to be a pump tank or 'pump chamber' designed to receive effluent from a true septic tank. The scum layer will be thicker because the layer is confined to the narrow neck and top of the round tank. This could cause the scum layer to rise above the inlet and outlet breathers causing havoc. Also, the inlet and outlet are very close together. A greater distance between the inlet and outlet allows for more thorough separation of scum, solids, and effluent. Better separation extends the life of the leach field. Then again, maybe you took that into account considering your daily usage. Thanks.
Lots of hard work. Done that kinda thing you have very dry conditions. Here in Minnesota it's so wet it's mush. The opposite problem
You did an excellent job on that tank. I'm anxious to see more on the smoke house. Watching from Marysville Washington. God Bless
Unbelievable how dry it is!
A two-compartment septic tank is what's needed. Your tank is designed for wastewater only, not waste AND water. A two-compartment tank will have waste/sludge in one compartment and then water/effluent in the other, which then drains into your leach field. You may have issues with your field lines in due time because solids will be able to more easily flow into them and clog them. But, I hope it works out for you.
renting a skidster with an auger attachment is not that bad. I rented one for 900 for 7 days and it came with a trailer. I did have to rent a f250 from home depot to transport it on day one and day 7. It was worth it though. The first two days i used a rock box and scraped all the rocks of the property. I was able to do a lot of pre planned work with the skid.
That worked pretty good. Boy you can't do that on our property. Just trying to dig a hole large enough the plant a one gallon flower pot in before you get a shovel deep the hole is full of water.
On the farm I grew up on, my brother and I hand dug a 6 ft w by 6 ft L by 6 foot deep hole to build a septic tanks in. The tank was made out of red brick in which my brother and I laid,. We did this same thing for a well pit.
I had no idea how septic tanks were made!
That was cool to watch.
👍💕
That's a lot of work but will worth it. A little bit at a time.
What brand of septic tank did you use?
What type of drain/leech field are you planning to use?
Got a video coming up on it.
good job
No grumbling brother..it could be much worse. Up here in Maine you dig down 2-3 feet and hit solid granite rock...maters don't grow good on that stuff....lol.
heya, nice instalation looks good
how many gallons is the tank?
I can't find part 1 enjoy your videos
Creative way to get the job done! Wondering where your microphone is? Is it on the camera or on Danny?
Its on top of the camera.
dead soil. no moisture means there's no organic matter. I highly recommend looking up Allan Savory if you haven't already.
The county doesn't have to inspect your tank?
No not if I do it.
@@DeepSouthHomestead we had to have the health department come out and check ours. It was approved but it is not released until the interior walls are done to prove it's a 2 bedroom house.
@@DeepSouthHomestead oh we did our our self also.
That is some scary dry soil right there. Hope y'all get some rain.
Did I miss where you got your tank and what size it is?

It’s day light where you are seem impossible
We are one state apart it’s still very dark here
I am still trying to figure out how you have clear daylight and sun
Site say one one state from you
When it's done and in use, get a pack of Green Pig septic tank treatment from Lowes. Around $12.00, and has four 3-month packets in it. A dollar a month ain't bad, and about the best I've tried.
If you put wood chips down as a cover for your ground your soil would get better
The termites would be everywhere in wood chips.
@@DeepSouthHomestead that would be bad
I like the atom bomb Just the tip Danny if you drill three holes where you need them and fill them with water come back the next day everything sticks to your auger so you can take it out of the hole
Is that a regular tank? ? Seem a lot bigger here?
We just have one bedroom in the cabin. Plus we are not here all the time.
Is that red clay?
Too bad a backhoe for your Kubota didn't come up at a local auction. Post hole auger did it but a small backhoe would be best for that job.
never seen one like that
I see no reason it shouldn't work. It will take several holes dug but if nothing else it will loosen up all the soil to make digging much easier.
You look like you are digging a well.
Put some water in the hole
If it works it works. Don't apologize for using what you have. That is exactly what our forefathers did. They made and made due. Getting it done is the only thing that matters
I'm not against this.. as a city grandma I have no clue, just enjoy learning and admire you.. BUT!! Why not do an outhouse? I get the indoor plumber advantage, but is that the only reason? I like watching the Alaska living shows and see how they just dig new holes for out house when filled, and they plant a tree. Also.. sure nice I didn't see any roots in your way, but it also means that those tree roots had to go real deep for their water.. praying for rain for you.
Code here says you can't have an out house if there is a well on the property. We plan on digging one eventually.
@@PhillipCeriale there is a distance of 100 ft required between the well and the septic tank.
Don't use your level for a pry bar !👍
No Stones first with this type of tank to avoid sinkage
👋😃
may work danny
How to abuse your tools.... #1. Use your level for a pry bar.
Why not just let your neighbor do it and just give him a couple hundred bucks or so
We didn't have the money plus he was busy for an extended period of time. We have been using a composting toilet for a while and was ready for a real toilet we could pour water into and flush.
@@DeepSouthHomestead Good job! Looking forward to part 2. Am wondering how you'll prevent backdraft and venting from the lower pipe, perhaps leach bed a good distance away? Nice little septic tank. Evidentally no permit needed.
Never buy a level from Deep South Homestead.
