Danny, thanks for passing this great information down to us! Everyone should understand the mechanics of putting in their own septic system. You and Wanda are invaluable to the DIY community in these times. Much appreciated.
Not that it matters but a plumber of 30 years enjoyed your video you do nice work. Good job bringing in the muscle for the backfill work,🤓and nice kubota Great piece of machinery.
Danny ; You are one of the last of Your kind ! I tell You that as a compliment ( in the highest regard ) ! You are very knowledgeable in more skills than practically Anyone else I've seen on youtube !!!!
We have a septic system. You really demystified how the whole thing works. I like how we have this check pipe with a bristle that allows us to monitor that your children and friends don't screw up the system. But I can see where that is just extra. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge.
Cleaning the joint first DOES matter. It's not a cleaner, it is an etch primer meaning it primes the surface by etching into it. There is a glaze that should be removed before the solvent cement is put on the two surfaces. Once the glaze is removed and the surfaces are etched it then allows the solvent cement to melt into both surfaces, thus creating a chemical weld. If you don't do it that way and the pipe moves, the joint will crack, leaking out effluent and allowing roots to grow in. Because of the way you backfilled with just ordinary dirt, especially under the pipe, I guarantee the pipe will move. The trench was not wide enough to have easy access to the pipe so that you could ram in 10mm, (3/8) blue metal or stones UNDER the pipe to correctly support it. Shoving dirt under the pipe is a recipe for disaster. The minimum fall for sewer pipe is, 1:60. If you give a fall of 1" in 4', then that's a fall of 1:48. I think you will find that your fittings come with a 2 degree fall, eg, a 90 degree bend is actually marked 88 degrees, giving it a 2 degree fall. To check if the fall is correct, when you lay the horizontal pipe in the trench with a bend on the end, put a small level across the vertical socket in line with the long pipe and if the pipe has the right fall the rising socket will be level. A septic tank should be no closer than 1.5M (5ft) from the house and before the line enters the tank, you should have a cleaning access in the horizontal line allowing easy cleaning to the tank and to the vertical WC riser. When you run the tank outlet, it should be far enough from the tank, that the level of the ground where the leach field is, is 450mm (18") below the level of the tank outlet. Why? To ensure that the effluent does not back up into the tank and then the house. You didn't mention putting in a yard gully, that's a 'P' trap with a grate on top, to protect the house from surcharge. I'm wondering if all you have in the house is a toilet. If so that's fine. But, if there is a shower, basin, laundry tub and kitchen sink, where will you run that grey water? If you bypass the septic tank and run it directly to the leach field, then you have a future disaster on your hands. You could connect it to your vent line, but then your septic tank will be overloaded, it's too small. Also, unless you have a perfect seal on the septic lid, or the top of the tank is 100mm (4") above the ground, water will get in and also overload the tank. Detergents keep oil in solution for a long time, even through a grease arrestor. Once grease enters the leach field, it will act like a plastic sheet, sealing off the ground so you eventually have no absorption.
I forgot to mention; There should also be a vent of some kind on the septic tank. Normally the underside of the lid is 100mm/4" above the ground. That would allow an induct vent installed on usually the access port above the tank outlet. This gives cross ventilation through the tank and up the main vent which also equalises pressure within the system.
You remind me of a good buddy. Hes passed on, now a few years ago! Not trying to be morbid... but cheers mate... good Video !! I so want to build a cool Acreage Soon !! Retirements calling.. the Old bones are creakin !! have a good Day !!!!
I'm doing the exact same thing right now, a bunch of roots ended up creeping their way in the seal were the pipe enters the tank and plugged it all up!!!! I'm doing exactly like you are I'm glad I was on the right track!
Excellent video. Your explanations make perfect sense at every turn. One small suggestion I have would be to rough up the fittings and pipe ends with sandpaper before applying cement. It's the old way that plumbers used to ensure solid mechanical/chemical bonding before primer/cleaner solvents came around. I used this method on supply line piping to re-plumb an entire house from scratch and it works like a charm.
...and they don't spend crazy amounts of time explaining the obvious steps. they show what needs shown, and allow a common sense brain to digest the rest
@chris , This! I always dread watching you tube videos because of the needless babbling. We come here to learn quickly not to hear people that enjoy hearing themselves talk.
Awesome videos Danny ,very informative and easy to understand , I can watch you guys for hours , we are building our very first cabin this Fall, very excited to say the least! I"ve learned a lot of tips for building so far and it"s awesome how good you and your wife work together. We will continue to follow all the way from way up north in Newfoundland ,Canada!!!!
It might not be under to much pressure at the moment but i thinknid still use cleaner and id do about a quarter turn once pipe was pushed together after glue was on it. Great video tho and looking forward to building my own soon. Thanks for sharing andteaching
great job i will be in the crap tank to install the inlet side it was catching the toilet paper and clogging up its 65 years old i love getting tips from the older guys . why go to collage when we have youtube
Thanks you have the only 300 gal Ball tank installation that I've found, I Installed one of these 40 years ago, not knowing what I was doing it lasted 35 years before we had to have it sucked out, wish I had known about the tees on the inside, oops Installing one now here in the Desert of the Big Bend of Texas and Thanks for the Knowledge friend.
I agree about your video being super informative..I am needing to add a clean out tee to my already installed septic tank pipe (line)..would you know how deep I have to dig and what tools I'd need that would work best to cut into (already installed) pipe...and how would I figure how much pipe to cut out for the clean out tee to fit right..?? a woman trying to do it myself...asap. (P.S. I want those coverall !!! (lol)..but, seriously, I do !!
All I have to say Danny is great job and by the way wanna job 😂very informative and I have to say you did a better job than most plumbers on the reasons for y and how it’s done I’ve been a plumber for 37 years and don’t even think I could explain it ( the installation) so elliquently ty for a great video sir god bless
Am just starting a log cabin project with my twin 17 yo boys in NH mountains and so glad i found your channel. Love the way you show and explain what your doing. Especially since most of your project looks very similar to what I’m doing. Keep up the great work! Thanks
You make this look so easy. We are building for the first time in AZ. Maybe we don’t need an expensive septic tank installed. I’m thinking my sons can do it after all. Being on a very tight budget we need to figure ways to save safely. I think I’m sold. Thanks!! Any videos on water tanks?
Thanks for showing us how a septic tank system is installed and works. We're having a house built and they're going to put in a septic tank. My wife had no idea what that was and I had a hard time explaining it with your video it made it simple. Thank you
Having to make repairs on a 40 year old plastic tank. The outset side was leaking at the tank seal. The tank was too close to the walkway by the kitchen. I will be installing a riser for easy access using a spray foam to seal above the outlet. Any ideas on this would help. Really got a lot of help from your videos. Thank you God bless
The house I grew up in had a ceptic tank. My mom had to replace the cement lid one time. The company that came out to fix it was blown away because it was clean as a whistle. My mom had never had to have it cleaned out in the 35 years she owned the house. When asked what she did she said, "I feed it on a regular basis". In other words she put "good bugs" in it that ate the poop and toilet paper. She only used Scott toilet paper (it's biodegradable), and never bought anything else. She knew how to take care of a cepit system. Today, I only buy the same toilet paper because I'm also on a ceptic system. She taught me well, and I'm 77 years old.
I love the rope and lever trick at 6:00. I don't know how many times I have had to connect an electric or water line in a trench to a building and it is usually a pain to get a good deep connection.
As a Plumbing Gas and Mechanical inspector for 30 years I had to make decisions based on codes for the City. And I went to many conventions year after year where we heard Underwriters and Manufacturers plead their cases and as a member of the ICC we would vote to deny or accept a resolution to adopt as code. I will say a majority was well thought out by professionals with engineering and architectural degrees, but many codes are driven by manufacturers products in pushing sales. Like non pressure piping using cleaner that will be underground is quite ridiculous. I’m now retired and live rural on a river and love the fact that neighbors are off the grid from inspections. I just spent $10,000 for a 200 Amp Square D Panel box , Sub panel inside house and new mast through the roof with a permit and with an Electrical inspector approved. Could have had it done without a permit and done this myself but insurance companies will subpoena all inspections department records if your house burns down to find ways avoid paying you especially when they see the work was done without a permit. I believe inspections are essential in electrical and gas work. Love your gray water system. We love raised gardens and I am about to re-plumb our entire house with a gray water system. This was an interesting approach in using gray water in gardening. Hope you show us the end results with your garden.
Back in the late 50's my grand mother passed away at 82 years old. She wouldn't let them put a water closet in the house because her home was clean, and no one was going to take a dump in her home. It's all a mater of perspective I suppose. LOL
I work in the septic business in NC. I liked some of your tips some were good some were different than I'm used to. Few things I noticed: 1. the block and rope trick is brilliant I like that. 2. Even on small homes we tend to use plastic 1000 gallon or concrete tanks. 3. Ts (on inlet)are not required in NC but are in VA. (anyone listening if the tank is 500 g or more bring the inlet within 6 inches of inlet hole) Usually don't use Ts so we can use a steel snake or pressure cleaner in case of clog. 4. Hunching the pipe is good yes it really does prevent sagging. 5. Our tanks have floated before even concrete tanks. They make anchors for the plastic infiltrator. We fill them up with 500g and it usually works good, or put machine bucket over it to keep it down. The small tank you used we put a pump tank in like that with a foot or two of concrete. 6. We use Filters in all new construction it's the law. I'd recommend you get one it will save you a field in the long run. 7. Tanks come with outlet lower than inlet, and we don't use the gib on top why do you use a gib there? 8. For what you were working with you did a fantastic job we have mini escavators. 9. What kind of field is it?
Danny, were can find the 4”rubber grommets for the 4” pvc pipe? (Lowes didn’t have anything bigger that 2” Also, When I cut the inlet and outlet whole one the tank(I think your already came with cut holes), to I use a 4” hole cutter or does it need to be 4.25” or bigger for the grommets to fit? Thanks
Do you live in the country? Is that septic tank big enough for your whole house? How many bedrooms do you have? Did you have to get a State inspector to inspect and approve you septic? Thanks a lot for sharing. I may be following your footsteps for my cabin likewise.
@13:05 ( Outlet Pipe) Is that a 1/8" drop from one end of the pipe to the other, whether its 2 feet long or 70 feet long..., or is it 1/8" drop per foot of pipe. You figure at 1/8 per foot, then an 8 foot pipe would be an inch drop., 16ft is 2" , etc.. But a 50 foot long pipe, for example, with only a 1/8" drop from one end to the other, is pretty much a level pipe. You figure over the course of years and years , particles would be collecting on the inside the pipe from such a low velocity ,that it would eventually cause an obstruction inside of the pipe. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just cant see a drop so small over such random lengths, being enough to keep it both flowing fast enough and keeping it clean inside.
Excellent explaining...thank you. I was wondering about the depth of the inlet and outlet pipe to ensure they're below the scum layer but above the sludge layer. I've watched a lot of videos but this was the first one that gave me the order of magnitude of those depths. Your videos are peaceful and relaxing to watch also. Thanks again man.
Where can I get that black septic tank at? What size was it? I google searched it an couldnt find one like that (the others are way to expensive for my project, so I want to get what you used. Thanks.
When you backfill these to help them take the weight of the ground fill above them, how much do you need to fill them? I mean you probably don't fill them all the way because you don't want it too full before the sewage goes in right? I am wondering what the right fill % to be approximately? (Most videos are saying they backfill them to help the cans support the weight when they put the earth over the top. But they aren't saying how full.) Also thank you.
How many gallon of a tank did you put in. I'm thinking about putting in a septic tank dedicated for our RV when we return from a trip that would have up to a possible 100 gallons that might have to be dumped into it. Might only use it once or twice a year at most.
I'm buying a property with an aerobic septic system and I will absolutely convert it day one when I take possession of the property to a conventional septic system. I need pointers on conversion.
In the state of Georgia the homeowner can pull their own permit and install their own septic system after taking a installers test at the environmental health department. We would have to install at least a 1000 gallon septic tank to handle up to a 4 bedroom home with a minimum of 65 ft. of field lines per bedroom ( depending on your soil type ) All new homes need to have a soil test done before the environmental health department will issue a permit that's in Georgia. I'm not sure what other states require but I would think they would be similar to what Georgia is doing. As for not using primer/cleaner on the PVC because it's not under pressure I think you should use it because it actually fuses the fitting and the pipe together to form a bond as strong as, or stronger, than the original material. I'm not on here to criticize what he is doing in the video I think he is doing a great job and what he is doing will work. I think the solids will build up a lot quicker in the small tank and will need to be cleaned out more frequently. I enjoy watching your videos they are very informative and I wish I had as much energy as you do.
I agree with the tank size. This is a place we just visit and shoot videos. If we lived here full time we would need a larger tank. The toilet only gets used on most days just once.
Don’t forget to call a real plumber after your fittings come apart. The purpose of primer is to begin the chemical reaction that softens PVC and to provide an even prepped surface for the solvent cement. As you may know, PVC joints are not glued together exactly, but fused through a chemical change. The softer the outer layer of your PVC, the better it will cement in your joint.
K P frap I guarantee he will live the rest of his life without any problems. My father did the same thing on the house we grew up in which I now own. I’m tearing up everything just because I want it a different way. We’ve tried to pull the joints loose and can’t do it. The pipe breaks before the joint turns loose. Primer was just another fancy way to trick the masses into spending more money.
Danny, you're obviously a skilled plumber/handyman, but you're an even better instructor! You guided me through doing my dyi rv septic system & I want to thank you! God Bless!
THE brother in law we all dream about...
Great video; no cute couples, no bratty kids, no extended intro with jarring music, just informative and interesting. Thank you, Sir 🙂
Danny, thanks for passing this great information down to us! Everyone should understand the mechanics of putting in their own septic system. You and Wanda are invaluable to the DIY community in these times. Much appreciated.
Your construction experience certainly has paid off.
Great to have guys like this sharing their experience and helping the rest of us along.
Not that it matters but a plumber of 30 years enjoyed your video you do nice work.
Good job bringing in the muscle for the backfill work,🤓and nice kubota Great piece of machinery.
Danny ;
You are one of the last of Your kind !
I tell You that as a compliment ( in the highest regard ) ! You are very knowledgeable in more skills than practically Anyone else I've seen
on youtube !!!!
Thanks
I like the rope and 2x4 trick to pull the pipe together. Also using the posthole digger. I always enjoy learning ways of working smarter not harder.
Best septic video hands down
Love these videos that explain "everything". This is how it's done folks! You haven't lived until you've built your own home. Ty for the upload sir. 🙏
First time visitor from Australia and loved your video..Commited subscriber from now on.
i dont speack english very well but this guy explain everything well , thanks for share your knowledge
Easy to understand and there was a couple tips I woulda learned the hard way. Ty sir
Danny I think you must have done just about everything they're is. A jack of all trades !
Just about my friend.

Ken Lyneham wow. You are very informative. Thank you
I forgot to mention;
There should also be a vent of some kind on the septic tank. Normally the underside of the lid is 100mm/4" above the ground. That would allow an induct vent installed on usually the access port above the tank outlet.

That is a really awesome idea you have using your post hole attachment on your tractor to help dig that trench. Thanks for the video.
This will come in handy, for sure.
Danny you are doing an awesome job of explaining how and why you are doing what you are doing. Personally I think your videos are top of the line
Renee Brown he’s freaking awesome!!! He inspires me on my farm!!!!

I was looking into building a system like this. I ended up using a book called the DIY septic system.
Where can I find that?
thanks for the video! Very informative and enjoyable to watch.
Thank you sir. Great information and important measurments
Am just starting a log cabin project with my twin 17 yo boys in NH mountains and so glad i found your channel. Love the way you show and explain what your doing. Especially since most of your project looks very similar to what I’m doing. Keep up the great work! Thanks
You are so very explanatory thank you so much but I do need to see one and two I need to know how to vent and everything from start to finish
I just want to say thank you.
The years in hours that you put into life it's what makes you smart good job thank you
Fine work Danny. Watching you work with the PVC tells me you’ve done this once before a timer to👍👍👍
Never seen someone as go go go as you. Love it. Your place is coming along fast. 🇨🇦🌻
I'll have time to rest when they lay me down.
You make this look so easy. We are building for the first time in AZ. Maybe we don’t need an expensive septic tank installed. I’m thinking my sons can do it after all. Being on a very tight budget we need to figure ways to save safely. I think I’m sold. Thanks!! Any videos on water tanks?

excellent infor Sir. very well explained. Thank you.
Nice video and perfect personality for this.. 👍
Thanks
Impressive plumbing works!
Just what I was looking for!
Also loved that beautiful quiet background music!
I like the post hole digger idea for trenching..
Do you have more videos about the septic system ? I can only find this one. Can you send me links to the others ? You did an great job
Yes they're in our playlist.
Wow. Thanks a lot. I feel I can install my own system now. You saved me a small fortune. Bless ya.

What kind of bugs?
That was awesome! Dont know how this made it to my feed but very happy and entertained! Maybe I will put that 2nd house on my property now
Good job bro didn't make it complicated
If the incline is greater than that, will it be a problem?... good video, thanks.
The idea is that the water will run away from the solids if the downslope is too great.
Thanks Danny, I hope all is well. Peace
Hello there, kool trick with the board, thanks. Have a wonderful, and Blessed day.
This’s old school the best way to learn...
I have a similar set up, this winter it froze at the elbow straight below the house, once ground thaws I will dig it up, possibly a sag in the line.
I love the rope and lever trick at 6:00. I don't know how many times I have had to connect an electric or water line in a trench to a building and it is usually a pain to get a good deep connection.

Not sure what you mean by gib? The g field is a manifold system. I have a video on it.
@@DeepSouthHomestead gib is just what we call those little 3 to 6 inches of pipe
Very straight forward ,, well done folks,
Great job !!! Good info👍😁💯
I have learned new things from watching your videos thank you!
Danny, were can find the 4”rubber grommets for the 4” pvc pipe? (Lowes didn’t have anything bigger that 2”
Also,
When I cut the inlet and outlet whole one the tank(I think your already came with cut holes), to I use a 4” hole cutter or does it need to be 4.25” or bigger for the grommets to fit?
Thanks
Thank you for explaining everything to wear a regular person can understand and the reasons why!
Thank y'all very much! Very helpful!
Great instruction! I am now confident in what I am doing. Peace my friend!
Do you live in the country?
Is that septic tank big enough for your whole house? How many bedrooms do you have? Did you have to get a State inspector to inspect and approve you septic? Thanks a lot for sharing. I may be following your footsteps for my cabin likewise.
I live in the country. Only the toilet runs into it. It's at the off grid cabin. We only use it a couple days a month. Just me and the wife.
@13:05 ( Outlet Pipe)
Is that a 1/8" drop from one end of the pipe to the other, whether its 2 feet long or 70 feet long..., or is it 1/8" drop per foot of pipe.
1\8 inch per foot of pipe. You don't want the water to run off and leave the paper.
Ain’t many turds that roll on their own very far either. Hahah
Work smarter not harder rite Dan us old guys know this , also no substitute for experience , thanks .
Glad it helped
Love your technique in pushing pipe to pipe hub joint connection.
Awesome 🌟💯
Where can I get that black septic tank at? What size was it? I google searched it an couldnt find one like that (the others are way to expensive for my project, so I want to get what you used. Thanks.
Cool video dude thanks! Im gonna be doing this soon myself and had no idea how the hell i was gonna do it.
Wow wow awesome Video thanks again
When you backfill these to help them take the weight of the ground fill above them, how much do you need to fill them? I mean you probably don't fill them all the way because you don't want it too full before the sewage goes in right? I am wondering what the right fill % to be approximately? (Most videos are saying they backfill them to help the cans support the weight when they put the earth over the top. But they aren't saying how full.)
Also thank you.
sp the barrel is the septic tank? have a new detatched garage with a toilet and sink below septic tank grade so I was thinking something like this
How many gallon of a tank did you put in. I'm thinking about putting in a septic tank dedicated for our RV when we return from a trip that would have up to a possible 100 gallons that might have to be dumped into it. Might only use it once or twice a year at most.
I am looking for part 1/2 of the septic series?
Hi.Where did you buy the rubber grommets from?
I'm buying a property with an aerobic septic system and I will absolutely convert it day one when I take possession of the property to a conventional septic system. I need pointers on conversion.
Nicely done Danny! This is good information, even for an expat living in the Philippines.
I glued pipe together way before they had primer no problem.
The reason for that exact angle of decline, is so the water flows at just the right speed so the solids will travel with the wave.
Yep, You don't want the water to outrun the turd is how its been said since 1947 around here, easy to remember 😉
@@wolfmanrebel874 well, that’s how I remember it, I just didn’t go there.
