THANK YOU! My wife asked if I'd like to color her roots - challenge accepted! We found your video, watched it twice, and I followed your tutorial. I had to improvise on that tool you used: I bought a 1" nylon-bristle paint brush, and trimmed the bristles so they flexed but still had some grab. I used a chopstick to separate the layers. Applied store-bought L'Oreal and nailed the color. It turned out great! She's so stoked, I'm relieved.
It’s obvious you’re a professional from how straight your sections are! I highlighted my hair yesterday and the sectioning is way harder than it looks lol
Shes using a grey coverage product, try age beautiful mix it with 10 or 20 ion developer. ( I've been doing my roots that way. ) I'm just here to look at other people's technics.
I've gone from red to blonde to periwinkle (faded out to blonde) now it's Lilac. Age beautiful is a hair stripping product also use for lighting roots. It's less damaging than using bleach.
This video is to show application technique and show coverage and even saturation. And for me to cover my grays lol! I'm not actually trying to change my root color but to match my base so it’s not meant to look particularly different, just touched up! Using a random box color would likely lead you down the wrong path so instead by using eSalons custom color, you'll get the right color for YOUR hair, and not just what i'm using for mine. I really hope this video helps you guys. xx
Soooooo to cover gray roots and it is actually growing through gray - am I using demi or perm color for roots, plus how the heck do I prevent it from running through my blonde??
Which do you think is better to cover grey? this or Schwartqaf (sorry if i spelled that wrong). I, for a while had a good stylist that could blend non coverable grey with blond highlights, but keep it a rich dark brown below, but of course, she went away and noone else seems to be able to get it right and the mistakes make me not want to give them more chances. I don't have a huge budget, and while manic panic is non damaging, I don't feel like wild colors right now. Anyway, I want a good color that lasts a bit on that grey, and the rest is naturally a mix of mostly brown with a little brown and blond. When most people highlight, it ends up orange and the grey still stands out, so I don't know what magic she did, but even if I learn stuff online, stylists have a tendency to not listen to me and tell me everything I learn online is just several words for the exact same thing. (like highlights/lowlights or balayage). And then they do something that is nothing like what I asked for, so if this E salon or Schwartcof is pretty good, even tho I have no energy to do it, it may be more worth it to do at home. I don't mind being grey or white or whatever it is, but my initial intention was for a gradual changeover because my sudden aging after an illness was too much to take. That one stylist totally got it and did magic, but then moved away. I was able to go almost 6 months between touch ups. I can only go for a few weeks with anyone else. But I leave it because i just have to save up for something like that. Any advice for my personal sitution would be so helpful. thankyou so much for your videos!! You and free salon education and a newer guy, justin hickox are the only ones online that give truly helpful, worthwhile info, that I have found. Many blessings and I pray you guys are safe and stay healthy and well supplied. i am nearly always stuck at home, not just right now, and the helpful info you give is truly a blessing!!
I gave a thumbs up and subscribed 😀. I love your root touch up technique!! I will emulate that tomorrow when I do my hair. To be honest- your hair's color was the same at the end of the video as what you started out with. But... it looked in great shape. When I do mine, I leave in for a lot longer than the package says. I am dealing with greys, so I have to. Thanks ellebangs!
Thank you, thank you❤ I just forwarded this to my mom. Just last night, she told me she needed to get her hair greys covered. I told her to buy a kit and do it herself. Sadly, she's never dyed her own hair before. So I just saw this upload of your's in my notifications, and forwarded it to her. She replied that your video was great, and she felt at ease about doing it herself, and needing to force my stepdad to help her LOL😁 Thank you, again 😘❤ Stay safe 💕

This is probably a silly question, but I don’t see the answer anywhere: how do you wash your hair after applying the root color without it touching the blonde highlights? Does it matter if when I clear the root color the water touches my highlights? My highlights are very blonde and I’m SO afraid it’ll get dark when I wash the roots!
Idk if this might be helpful to you my hairdresser told me how to do my hair, which is very blonde but it might also apply to you. She uses majirel by l'oreal, you can order it on amazon look at the color chart for the color you want and then use a developer (20 vol for lifting two tones and 30 for lifting 3 tones). It is a 2:1 ratio. Then just do it from the bottom to the top of the roots. Again, idk if that's helpful to you but it has worked out for me with majirel high lift 1/2 beige + 1/2 neutral with the 30 vol developer.
It depends on what your natural color is. A high lift color might do it but if you super dark you may need bleach. Hilift is great but has limits. Loreal has some good choices, I've used that to go vibrant red and it didn't ravage my hair.
Hi Elle! I am seeking your advice. So I tried to mix equal parts permanent dye in shade 8N with 10 volume (tried to make it 1.5 to 1.5 ounces) and applied it to my roots for a root tap. Anyway, this colour did not lift/lighten the colour of my dark roots (but did cover some of my greys coming in at least), so i am thinking in 4 weeks I will try a lighter shade - 9N for the root tap and/or try putting in some babylights, particularly around the front of my face to lighten things up. Anyway, my question for you is that when I did the root tape with 8N perm dye I got some it unfortunately on a couple small strands the none-root part (so the blonde stuff) and it turned it a bit purple. This happened on a small amount of strands near the front of my face. I am wondering what you would recommend to correct this issue. Should I just try highlighting those strands with bleach mixed with 20 developer? Please advise. Thank you! Loved your video on how to cut your own hair and also the video on how to cut your man's hair. I followed along to both of those and the end products were a success!! :)
Question. I have balayage and baby lights. I just need to touch my roots in between color appointments. When I rinse out my root color how do you prevent it from getting on your current highlights
İm a mom for two babies who is 18month and 4month, it is really hard to find time to go to the hair dresser to stay at least two hours, because there is no one can look after them except dady, today i found your channel and i love your videos even your hair colour and style it looks nice, im gonna do myself at home now

I’ve bought hair dye from them a long time ago when she talked about them in a very old video but I didn’t like it my hair felt really dry afterwards but I didn’t think much of it at that time so I bought another dye for my mom and I answered questions based on my moms hair so basically ordered one for grey hair coverage and that didn’t work on my mom didn’t cover anything from there on I was disappointed and never bought again.
Since it's not salon quality color like she claims (any color provided for the general, unlicensed public could never legally be of professional quality) it's loaded with drying ammonia and metallic salts. Not sure why she promotes it as a licensed professional.
I use a box dye to do my roots. It doesn’t have ammonia in it and my hair actually looks better than when I go to the salon. Its all the same chemicals. They just don’t want you doing it yourself.
I'm in cosmetology school so I know what I'm talking about. Box dye and professional color have way different chemical makeup. I went through a ton of theory work learning about it.
Watched this twice and then followed along. Other than the back being harder to section & do, my results were fantastic! Thanks so much for this tutorial❣️
Thank you thank you! I don't know if I have the courage to do this...concerned it'd turn out terribly. Hair has 2 shades of blonde & ash blonde @ the roots. My root color has grown out about 2 1/2 inches, so not looking so great right now.
Love it. I am planning to follow your tutorial tomorrow. I bought my colors for the first time at Sally. My roots are 5,5 months old, and I want to give my hair some shine and color the grays. I have a high hopes. We shall see. I love your videos. New subscriber here.

I would like to add darker roots to my bleached hair, but don’t want it to bleed into the blonde too much. What is the best way to do this. I am SO HAPPY I FOUND YOUR RUclips VIDEOS!!!
Love your videos Could you tell me why when i put a level 7 or 8 ash to cover too yellow highlights it wont cover just looks gold ... so frustrated I am a level 7ish medium ash blonde natural with too thick yellow highlights and trying to cover some up Any help would be much appreciated I have a cupboard of products and no results
Love your videos. Been following your tips for 2 yrs... I get so many compliments on my blonde tones. Can you recommend a pair of shears? I want to start to do a basic at home trim- thanks.
U make it look so easy... I did the ESalon and boy it looks black - how do you get it to not run through your hair when rinsing off??? hilities tomorrow.... say a prayer...
I just dyed my hair with dark golden blonde box dye and it came out orangey tinted and I’m scared to do anything but I don’t want the orange tint... any ideas?! Please halp this quarantine has a sister tweeking ❤️🥺
Kimba 333 🙏 I’m just not sure if I should try and lighten it more and then tone or try and tone it as it is now since it’s still pretty darkish still (I’m a dark brunette)
If you just want to get rid of the orangey tint but don't want to go any blonder then buy 7.1 or 8.1 (medium or dark ash blonde) from any brand and it will tone down the orange pigments in your hair. Try Clairol 8A if you wanna take out the brass but don't expect your hair to be any lighter! If you don't want to dye your hair again then opt for a purple shampoo (John Frieda Intense purple shampoo works for a lot of people, just leave it on for at least 5 mins). If you wanna go lighter you have to pre-lighten your hair (with bleach or ultralift) which I don't recommend during lockdown as the resources are quite limited. Hope I could help!
Susie Ladnai thank you so much!! ❤️ the medium or dark ash hair dye won’t give an ash blonde but just tone out the orange right? I’m trying for a golden tone instead of ash since my skin tone is pretty olive
I just got my esalon today going to try it tonight hope it turns out :) I only bought it because I need my hair done and you recommend it so I got my fingers crossed 🤞
I want the black roots look with my died gray hair..but cant seem to part it right to get my scalp to look naturally grown in if u get what i mean? I want a balage i guess my hair grows in brown i like dark roots blending into my purposely grey hair ..any tips or video on doing this myself or parts
I did try ESalon for my roots and was happy enough but when it came to hilites it seems their bleach/developer would need to be stronger??? by roots are dark and where I have messed around with it my hilites have gone orangey...... I am worried about doing roots and then having to do hilites over new color..
I wish if you could make a video on how you choose your color on esalon, please can you make a video on how you place your order, answer the questions and pick a shade.thank you. So I can just have an idea, I know we all have a different color but just to guide ourselves.
I have a question not really about roots. I made a mistale in dying my hair light ash brown. I have jetblack hair. I blught another box, same box. If I dye it again with the same shade, will my hair turn brown? And how many days before I csn color my hair again to do this
Just curious about esalon- you said it does say what color you are getting on the paper you showed. Do you mean just that its permanent color, demi-perm. color, etc or does it say the actual level and tone?
Well, my girlfriend made me do this. And I really messed it up despite watching your video. I am a Butcher by trade, don't know why she thought I'd be able to pull this off LOL oh well. At least while she's crying upstairs I can have some free time in the garage.
Sort of off topic, but I can't seem to find hair color that's direct dye only that's in the brown family. I only see fashion colors in the direct dye. Do browns only come in demi-permanent and permanent? TIA!
I had a question about redken color fusion. I read that you can only use it on virgin hair because it is alkaline. Is there a risk in putting it in hair that has been lightened all over after say, a week?
Hi! nice video! Sorry for all the wrong technical terms that are about to follow! In order not to see my greys, which usually start appearing after 2 weeks I dye my hair, my stylist made my color a brighter than my natural ash-blonde. Now that I've been trying to paint the hair by myself, the result is quite darker than I would like (using the same color!!). I also tend to paint a bit more than just the root - I cannot help it, I'm really bad at the job!! The hair tents to become brighter after a 5-6 times I wash it. Apparently, I am using the correct analogy of oxygene&color, could it be that I am too slow in applying the color, and I should leave the paint for 25 min instead of 30? Thanks!!!!!!!
I think some people are expecting your roots to change color LOL... She is just covering grays the SAME color & maintaining a darker root. GEEEEZ people!!!! Pretty as always Silvia=) I LOVE your necklace- Who is the designer or where can I get it??
Hi I have colored my roots at home using 7a and 8nn which I like. My natural root color is between a 5 to 6. If I want to go a shade lighter would i use 8a and 9nn or would 8na give me results? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I was in the exact same situation but I followed her video on babylights. I mixed it with Brad Mondo’s method and it turned out great. I think you can definitely do it at home
I I tried to dye my hair at home and the roots are much brassier then the previously dyed lengths can I bleach my roots then dye them to match? I already tried using an ash blonde on the roots but it didn’t help.
This may be a basic question but how do I darken my roots (naturally a copper red and I color roots a neutral level 4) and not bleed that dark color on my lighter brown and blonde pieces when washing out? I’ve failed at this and need help please 😢
I've heard before that where the root touchups overlap a little with the older color there can be a faint line that was not intended. Also, I've heard that the heat from your head can make the color develop differently than the sections further down and that is a reason to not wait too long between touchups. I've never done this before so I'm not sure if that's true, any thoughts?
Body heat is only and issue when using bleach not when you’re depositing colour because a shade can’t change as in light brown can only be light brown no matter how long it’s on the hair,
I have heard from my hairdresser that you can wrap pieces of your blond hair in tin foil (as if you had applied blond to it) while you are washing out the dark root color to protect it from the dark
So my naturally Color/shade of hair is a lever 7/8 but I am covered in highlights, so basically always bright warm/golden blonde. Natural curly. I am fifty and about 40-50% gray. I’m starting to see the grays throughout my blonde. I am interested in all-over color and then highlights over all to finish plus a toner to blend. But how do I choose a color to hide gray but stil remain golden blonde. Or should I just start doing lots of low lights instead of a full all over color. All the women on major news and like kelly rippa always looked so finished. I want to look finished! ( I have softer thin curly hair)
Great tutorial..So..I got a full foil of blonde highlights over like a 1/12 dark root like 3 months ago at salon..similar to your style..but there were some darker pieces throughout my head..I had to use a root retouch system Revlon Root Erase from the store recently in black.. I sectioned my hair right..I clipped up my hair after I put a thick conditioner in it .so the color wouldn't bleed into the blond when I rinsed out the color.. and it bled anyway. Now I have dark brown hair with light brown highlights...what Can I do to get it to be blonder again? ..
next time make sure when you wash out the colour you use cold water to prevent bleeding! Unfortunately the revlon root erase is a permanent colour which won't fade out on its own and is a pain to remove... make sure you stick to demi permanent in future. The blonde parts would require bleaching again in order to get out the colour but this is best left to a professional as you can get massive damage by bleaching hair a second time

Pastor Madeline The bleaches section would be considered another color. You would need to do two colors, on for the bleached and one for the roots.
Typically with hair dye you can only lift 1-2 shades of your natural (root) color. Bleached sections can be refreshed with colored shampoos or toners.

Watched this twice and then followed along. Other than the back being harder to section & do, my results were fantastic! Thanks so much for this tutorial❣️
Would you tell me please wich number of color is?? I like that root color for me too.
aixuri Mood I would also like to know that color. Thanks
@ellebangs what color do u use ?
Question. Will the brown color change the blonde as you rinse?
I'm going to attempt to highlight grey hair, any suggestions
I’m not a hair stylist but I can completely tell the difference
Thank you thank you! I don't know if I have the courage to do this...concerned it'd turn out terribly. Hair has 2 shades of blonde & ash blonde @ the roots. My root color has grown out about 2 1/2 inches, so not looking so great right now.
When you washed out the root coloring, how did you protect the bottom of your hair do not ruin those beautiful highlights?
Love it. I am planning to follow your tutorial tomorrow. I bought my colors for the first time at Sally. My roots are 5,5 months old, and I want to give my hair some shine and color the grays. I have a high hopes. We shall see. I love your videos. New subscriber here.
Which color to use if my natural color is chestunt?thank you❤i prefer of keune color..can you tell me?
This video was the highligth of my week. Thank you so much. It would be nice to know, which color formular you would have used to mix. Because now I don´t have the time to order and only the salon products at home....
Thank you for this video. I just touched up my roots for the first time and I used eSalon per your recommendation and I am totally in love ❤❤❤❤. Thank you again 😘.
Hey girl thanks for your tutorial 💕🤍 really you look amazing i watch many of your videos..🤩 i have a question plz answer me 😘 i need to do hair color for the roots n greys but also need to bring my highlights up n tap on it too( balayage it) .. which step is first roots coloring or highlights ? Thanks 🙏🏻 I
I would like to add darker roots to my bleached hair, but don’t want it to bleed into the blonde too much.
Where did you get your denim jacket? I love the color and distressing and can’t find one like this
I just dyed my hair with dark golden blonde box dye and it came out orangey tinted and I’m scared to do anything but I don’t want the orange tint... any ideas?! Please halp this quarantine has a sister tweeking ❤️🥺
sandswanch see if you can find a toner at the esalon she got hers from. The orange should come out. Good luck
Was it a demi permanent too blend the grays or permanent to fully cover them?
Can you use the color with foil instead like lowlights if you have very sensitive skin?
I just got my esalon today going to try it tonight hope it turns out :) I only bought it because I need my hair done and you recommend it so I got my fingers crossed 🤞
I used it and was super excited. My hair turned orange. Followed the directions to a T and ordered COOL Blonde Beige.
So I want to bleach a small length of my root regrowth. Any advice I have about 6 months of regrowth but I want to keep my natural hair.
I want the black roots look with my died gray hair..but cant seem to part it right to get my scalp to look naturally grown in if u get what i mean? I want a balage i guess my hair grows in brown i like dark roots blending into my purposely grey hair ..any tips or video on doing this myself or parts
Hi Elle, how did you wash your hair that didn't ruin your balayage. I am scared that washing out my color will ruin my highlights
What similar company would you recommend that delivers to Australia?
If your hair rebonded 2yrs ago, can you bleached from root? Thank you.
Does the products ship overseas?
What color did you use...I have almost the same color you have
Well, my girlfriend made me do this. And I really messed it up despite watching your video. I am a Butcher by trade, don't know why she thought I'd be able to pull this off LOL oh well. At least while she's crying upstairs I can have some free time in the garage.
Is there actually a difference between before and after?
Thanks for the link! I can't wait for the kit to arrive.
Sort of off topic, but I can't seem to find hair color that's direct dye only that's in the brown family. I only see fashion colors in the direct dye. Do browns only come in demi-permanent and permanent? TIA!
If i want to add some lowlights show i do roots wash out then, or should i do it at same time
I had a question about redken color fusion.
If I know my Goldwell hair color formula would you be able to point me in the right direction to exactly what I need to purchase to do it at home?
Is there a link for esalon?
Hi I have colored my roots at home using 7a and 8nn which I like. My natural root color is between a 5 to 6. If I want to go a shade lighter would i use 8a and 9nn or would 8na give me results? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Probably using the 9 will give a better result as it would be a more noticeable change in shade
Would u recommend buying 2 kits so we can do a patch test first?
What is the best brand for coloring gray hair? My hair is a level 7. Thank you?
Do they do highlighting kits as well?
What is the color make...what level color are YOU using here please
Can you use regular aluminum foil to do highlights on your hair
Very helpful. Off topic what do you have on your fsce to get that light bronze. It looks beautiful on you. I love the 10 doll salon color for 10 doll
I need to know a diy at home balayage touch up. My blonde is halfway down my head now and i need to refresh and lighten up my ends again. 🙏🏻
Lauren Dalton, she has a video (or two) about this on her RUclips channel 💕
I was in the exact same situation but I followed her video on babylights. I mixed it with Brad Mondo’s method and it turned out great. I think you can definitely do it at home
I I tried to dye my hair at home and the roots are much brassier then the previously dyed lengths can I bleach my roots then dye them to match? I already tried using an ash blonde on the roots but it didn’t help.
When you rinse out how did you keep the dark color you put on your roots from changing your blonde portion..it still looks very lite,??
video starts at 3:50
Why did you not show how to section off and color the back?
This may be a basic question but how do I darken my roots (naturally a copper red and I color roots a neutral level 4) and not bleed that dark color on my lighter brown and blonde pieces when washing out? I’ve failed at this and need help please 😢
What colour did you use?
You originally said 4 sections. During the process there are only 3. Which a the correct way??
Hi Elle!,
What pair of scissors would you suggest for home use? Thanks!
I added some affordable ones to my amazon list in the description box.
Rita Merrill I’d love an answer on this because I’m way grown out and just ordered my kit!
Body heat is only and issue when using bleach not when you’re depositing colour because a shade can’t change as in light brown can only be light brown no matter how long it’s on the hair,
How do I get a virtual consult with you?
So how do you keep the dark from running into the blond
How can I keep the dark base color from making my blonde color darker when I rinse it out. It always comes out darker. Please help 🙏👍❤️
I have heard from my hairdresser that you can wrap pieces of your blond hair in tin foil (as if you had applied blond to it) while you are washing out the dark root color to protect it from the dark
How do you section it so perfectly 😮
What if u have a side part? How do u then section it off?
So my naturally
Color/shade of hair is a lever 7/8 but I am covered in highlights, so basically always bright warm/golden blonde.
What color are u using?
what about dying dark roots blonde?
Great tutorial..So..I got a full foil of blonde highlights over like a 1/12 dark root like 3 months ago at salon..similar to your style..but there were some darker pieces throughout my head..I had to use a root retouch system Revlon Root Erase from the store recently in black.. I sectioned my hair right..I clipped up my hair after I put a thick conditioner in it
.so the color wouldn't bleed into the blond when I rinsed out the color.. and it bled anyway.
