@OlaEnglund I like how you announced that you are shortening your Tha News segment after talking about the biggest news of the decade, Portnoy and DT. Anytime there is news about DT. should be as long as it takes. Also, you should try to get Portnoy a coffee w Ola . if you haven’t already tried yet. He was always my favorite DT member and I’m a guitar player not a drummer.
I don't think it's annoying when you talk about your music or merchandise brother . I really appreciate everything you create and share . You are a very inspiring person Ola and a great musician .
Both Mangini and Portnoy are amazing drummers! I think what a lot of people didn’t know was that Portnoy always had a crucial role in the songwriting and production process of dream theater. And I think you could immediately hear that the songs and the songwriting changed when he was gone
There have been plenty of highlights with Mike Mangini on the throne. Pale Blue Dot is up there with my absolute favourite DT tracks. It will be amazing with Mike Portnoy back but we owe a great debt of thanks to MM.
Dream Theater never really got me in the Portnoy era, their music was chained on Metal boring, on the other hand, with Mangini they all improved their playing at the point they all were kissing perfection, even James vocals sound amazing. If you listen to Mangini era songs like "the alien" "barstool warrior" and compare to the Portnoy era you'll realise they become a way better band. Sorry old fans but I'm afraid Portnoy will drag DT back to a metal boring band. Just an worthless opinion...
@@eumesmo6209 I agree that they made many boring metal songs with Portnoy, but even worse ones with Mangini. Bland songs and production and LaBrie using autotune.
With all the new solar guitars coming, can we by any chance expect a new Iceman inspired shape? I would love to see the result of a solar take on this design
Portnoy was essentially dream theater’s frontman. He was the public face of the band the majority of the time. He was always ahead of the curve with marketing ideas too. The filming in studio stuff he was doing with the band was basically the blueprint for what all bands do now. Portnoy was also a massive influence on the writing process. Dream theater is going to sound whole again.
It’s been at least a year or so that I tell my friends or collegues (I work for the french promoter of DT) that I felt that Portnoy was coming back quite soon. Good news!! Speaking of Mangini, freaking excellent Drummer and I really loved the work he did with Extreme too back in the mid 90’s
Segments I really enjoy in SWOLA are the intro songs, adventures with Ola, riff of the week, new Solar updates and guitars and just hearing you talk about cool shit!
The groove, YES!! Couldn't agree more, Ola! There's an obviously undeniable chemistry between MP and JP that made overly complex songs feel organic instead of cyborg-ish. Mangini is a beast of a musician - and everyone should thank and applaud him!
Both Mangini and Portnoy are some of the best drummers on the entire planet. Still happy about Portnoy being back but Mangini wasnt Really a worse drummer.
Magnini is a freaking beast! But undoubtedly the value that Portnoy brings to the band is song writing. He's always had a large input in the writing process and to me personally it has made that extra difference.
I can't believe it's been 13 years since the tryouts for a new drummer for Dream Theater. I remember Marco Minnemann's tryout and thinking surely he's got the gig and then hearing that they'd given the throne to someone else. 13 years? Holy shit 🤘🎸♥👍
Health are amazing. They are more metal than many of the metal bands these days. They also have lots of collabs, even with Lamb of God. I strongly recommend them to everyone
overall they have a pretty unique sound. I stumbled upon them when I first heard Blue Monday (New Order cover) and was blown away by the rest of their music.
I had the exact same reaction and thoughts when I read the news. I was outright happy shocked. Felt bad for Mangini, but he will go on to do other amazing projects. Cant wait for the new dynamic and live shows.
While I am happy to see M Portnoy get back into DT (I love his humor as much as his playing), I really hope Mike Mangini does well on his future projects. I met him at a DT meet and greet several years ago and he was a really nice and friendly guy. Needless to say his playing was absolutely killer also.
I was surprised when Mangini even went for a permanent gig like Dream Theater. He's been a well known drummer since the 80s and seemed to always move around doing different things and seemed content with teaching. So that's what worked for him for all those years, I expect him to go back to that approach.
Saw Jared with John5 a couple years ago. I had never heard of him until the show. I became a instant fan. He put on a great show. Did a Alice In Chains cover. He has so much energy. Hung out at his merch table. Super cool and super talented man!!
The return of Portnoy in the band made my week!!! I am so looking forward to listening to the new album. I'm already looking forward to seeing them back ob the road.
At least they parted amicably. And Mangini behaved very classily. He congratulated the fans and Portnoy. Portnoy also thanked him. Even though I feel very sad for Mangini, I think this is the best scenario for him too. Because the majority of fans never accepted him. Mangini is an amazing drummer and 99.9% of drummers can't play the things he plays. Despite this, some fans continued to complain. Mangini may possibly be the best drummer in the world but he still wasn't enough for the fans. So if he was still playing jazz with one hand and Latin music with the other while doing 6 somersaults in the air, people would still criticize him for some stupid reason. I love Portnoy and I'm glad he's back, but it's frustrating that Mangini isn't getting the treatment he deserves.

I agree with you about how Portnoy has groove. His heart and soul was in his performances. I was listening to Score yesterday (I was actually there that night) and his live chops and dynamics propelled them to another level. Welcome home, Mike Portnoy.
Portnoy was also the predominant influence for more extreme metal and prog music as well, which obviously influenced their earlier work quite heavily, especially considering how much he contributed to writing.
Speaking of Portnoy, that intro riff sounds so much like Adrenaline Mob lol. I'm so excited to hear him back in DT too, though I still think Mangini did real well in his place.
Thanks for bringing the Riff Of The Day back! I called my son into the room when I was watching and we both learned that riff together this morning 🤘🤘🤘
Super excited to hear what Dream theater come up with now with Portnoy back in the band. A bit more rock/metal rather than prog extreme would do the band good if you ask me, as much as I really enjoyed the latest album and tour. Off to the Ola shop now....or Solar if the interview goes well on Tuesday.....
I’m unbelievably hype for DT right now. Mangini was incredible, but he’s also a schooled musician, having taught at Berklee, so it’s not like he’s not going to have gigs.
Definitely feel bad for MM, I remember when MP bolted from DT and thought the band was over. But watching the drummer auditions was fun and I opened my eyes to other drummers I hadn’t heard of. With that said I was also posed at MP but I followed him and saw him with Winery Dogs who are a great band. Wondering how long before Mike gets bored and wants to do something different?......... Welcome back Mike and thank you Mike Mangini for your time spent in Dream Theater. You’ll be missed
Happy Portnoy is back also, you hit the nail right on the head with your thoughts on their music after Mangini joined. As far as changing SWOLA up, bring back your lovely wife Louise! I thought it was cool when she was learning the bass and you two jammed and “Ola and Louise tasting shit” was fun.
Great to see you mention Live Louder and Dan again, it is the best metal guitar shop in the UK and Dan is such a nice bloke who knows his gear inside and out. I've bought from there before and it was a great experience! He told me about meeting Ola so I'm glad Ola has remembered, Ola should just go to the store to pick it up and do an Adventure with Ola for it!! The Portnoy thing is really interesting and I suspect it might lead to the first Dream Theater album I find interesting after "A Dramatic Turn of Events". For all the albums after, I didn't even finish one listening session. Not because of Mangini but because it got old and started feeling like the albums were made of 80% B-sides and leftovers. Get some of the old magic back might help it and it would be great to see DT - just like Metallica recently - re-learn how to do it right. That said, I'm a little bit worried because the drama queen thing and narcissism part in Portnoy may have calmed down but usually such things never go away for good. Wouldn't be surprised to read that he was kicked out at some point in the mid-term future.

The Desert Rose, it is literally torched right? That finish is only possible if you torch it and then use sand paper. Ancient technique recently rediscovered. Funny thing is that you don't have to use varnish afterwards. The coal gives it weatherproof features.
I have one A2.6 Candy Apple Red, I bought this guitar just because of the color because I had never tried a Solar before, I just love how these guitar looks, the A2.6 looks like a sport car and this color just fits right on that
