A few days after I became a believer I sat down by the fire on my own and candidly asked God is there such a thing as the holy spirit. And 1 corinthians 12 popped into my mind. I didn't even know of corinthians. I'd never read the bible. So I got hold of a Bible and looked it up.. I was utterly blown away.
After I gave my heart to the Lord, a few days later someone prayed for me to be baptised with the holy spirit. And that evening the Lord gave me the most beautiful infilling of his spirit. The most beautiful experience of my life.
Believe is something you do. Is it a works? Confess with your mouth is something you do. Is it a works? Repenting is something you do. Is it a works? Going down in water being baptized in the Name of Jesus for the remission of sins is something you do. Is it a works? How is that a works anymore so than the other aforementioned things you do?
I appreciate coming back to Scripture on this issue. Too many misconceptions entrap this issue. And Mark is an intersection of Matthew and Luke. 2 Gospel hypothesis advocates (Farmer, Orchard, et al) have uncovered this well.
Being born of water and and Spirit........Agree that water is the physical birth considering what they are doing with births outside of the womb experiments, CRISPR tech etc......You must be physically born as God intended it to a great extent. Being born again.........First Physically then born again spiritually. All Glory to God
Surprised he didn't cover the Hendiadys figure of speech. I'm not sure Peter was handled correctly, I feel a bit less confident about this than before but at the end of the day the bible is clear we receive the Spirit after we believed what we heard ,(the gospel)
Also that Jesus said "of water and Spirit" and not "of Spirit and Water" in that, goes more in common with the explainations of Andy Woods. But there is another verse, which Andy Woods ignored, which I found the most troubling: (Apg 22:16 [KJV]) And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Said Ananias to Saul/Paul, which came beforehand to faith.
Ps Woods, if Jesus died on Friday and He was raised on Sunday, how do you fit 3 days and 3 nights from Friday noon, till sunrise on Sunday? I have just discovered dispensations and your comment really bothers me. Please help. Thank you. Lilyian
You are completely right! :) Jesus didn't die on a friday, but on a wednesday evening. Scripture provides enough evidence for that. Check here: focusonjerusalem.com/thedayJesusdied.html
But *the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God:* for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2, 14 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of *water [WORD OF GOD]* and of *the Spirit [HOLY SPIRIT],* he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. *That which is born of the flesh is flesh;* and *that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.* Marvel not that I said unto thee, *Ye must be born again.* John 3, 5-7 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. *In him was life;* and the life was the light of men. John 1, 1-4 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: *Which were born,* *not* of blood, *nor* of the will of the flesh, *nor* of the will of man, *but of God.* *And the Word was made flesh,* and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. And Jesus said unto them, *I am the bread of life:* he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. John 6, 33,; 35 It is *the spirit* that *quickeneth;* *the flesh profiteth nothing:* *the words that I speak unto you,* *they are spirit,* and *they are life.* John 6, 63 *Being born again,* not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, *by the word of God,* which liveth and abideth for ever. Even *when we were dead* in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) Ephesians 2, 1; 5
When Nicodemus came to Jesus that night, Jesus knew Nicodemus and the other Pharisees "rejected the counsel of God against themselves not being baptized of John" (Lk.7.30). While the pharisees rejected salvation, everyone who submitted to John's baptism Jesus promised, would "go" into the kingdom. (Mt.21:31-32). Let's break this down 1. Refuse John's baptism, a rejection of salvation. 2. Submit to John's baptism "Go" into the kingdom. So Jesus warned Nicodemus if he was not born again of water (Baptism), and of the Spirit, he cannot not enter into the kingdom (Jn.3:5). When Nicodemus approached Jesus, notice he said, "We know (positively know) that you come from God for no man can do these things you do unless God is with him." Though Nicodemus "Believed on the Lord Jesus," he was not born again. A definite problem for those who are of the "faith alone and Christ alone" persuasion. According to them, Nicodemus should have been saved the moment he believed. But according to Jesus, his "faith alone" was not sufficient to be born again. Those who argue against baptism do their best to change the meaning of water in Jn.3:5 to amniotic fluid, which breaks at childbirth. But scripture does not support this foreign meaning of water. For Nicodemus was already physically born of a woman when Jesus warned him to be born again. For Nicodemus to be born again, both water and of the Spirit is required. The question raised by Nicodemus that Jesus replied to was, "How can a man when he is OLD be born again? It is obvious that a man can not re-enter his mothers womb, so obviously Jesus did not have to take the time to explain one has to first be physically born. Let's give Jesus some credit. Nicodemus understood exactly what Jesus meant by water, for he definitely was not thinking of amniotic fluid. He was very well aware of both John and Jesus baptizing thousands in water (Mk.1:4-5; Jn.4:1-2). In addition, Jesus explained why the harlots and tax collectors were going into the kingdom of God before them. As Jesus gave the answer in the following verse. "For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots >believed him:< and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him" (Mt.21:31-32). The harlots and tax collectors "believed John," accepting his message and submitting to his baptism. But though the chief priests and elders witnessed it, they still would not repent and submit, rejecting salvation. Faith and obedience are conjoined in scripture (Jn.3:36 NASB). As Jesus continues to explain to Nicodemus, keeping in context with water referring to baptism. Jesus said "that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit" (vs.6). "That which is born of the flesh" is not a reference to physically being born, which BTW does sound like it. But is referring to the body/flesh when we are baptized, when we are born again. This is the physical and visible part of our baptismal ceremony. When our flesh is immersed in baptism. Where "born of the Spirit" is invisible, as the blowing of the wind (vs.8), the forgiveness of sins, and receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit. Peter does a wonderful job in explaining how one is born of water and of the Spirit. "Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which lives and abides for ever" (1Pt.1:22-23). First notice our souls are purified when we "obey" the truth. Not when we believe the truth, but when we obey the truth. "Through the Spirit...being born again by the Word of God." The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in our initial conversion, as He works on our hearts through the Word of truth. When we obey the truth, being baptized for the forgiveness of sins, our souls are purified/forgiven/saved, therefore born again. Just as Jesus warned Nicodemus, "Unless a man is born of water (Baptism/obedience) and of the Spirit (through the Word of God), he cannot enter into the kingdom." If Nicodemus heeded Jesus warning and was baptized that night or the following day, he was born again. On Pentecost day is when he entered into the kingdom and received the gift of the Holy Spirit. On the day of Pentecost, when the crowd asked what they could do to be saved. Peter did not say, you're already saved because you believe on the Lord, But said "repent and be baptized...for the forgiveness of your sins. Peter continued preaching "with many other words testifying and exhorting said, Save yourselves from this wicked generation." Think about it, If the crowd were already forgiven by faith alone, then why did Peter insist they still needed saving? Same scinenerio as Nicodemus. Having faith, but not yet saved. So what did they need to do to save themselves? The next verse answers. "Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls" (Acts 2:40-41). To save themselves they were baptized. Notice Jesus did not add the 3000 to the kingdom until after they were baptized. Just as Jesus said, "Unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom."
Sir, you really need to believe the bible. Baptism does NOT produce eternal salvation. It produces remission of sins. You are really ignorant on this subject. Eternal salvation comes by obedience to God. You know like works. Heb 5:8 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. Heb 5:9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, No works, no eternal life. We will be judged by our works. 2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Got it? Your distorted understanding of Eph 2:8-10 is guided by Luther and his total ignorance of this subject. Remission of sins does not equal eternal salvation. It is the first step to that goal. You also do NOT understand the meaning of the English word "faith". It is a noun. Believe is a verb. Faith is what we are to obey. Rom 1:5; and 16:26 but now made manifest, and by the prophetic Scriptures made known to all nations, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, for obedience to the faith- You are really lacking in your actual knowledge of the scriptures. pistis, faith, is a noun. pisteuo, believe is a verb. You need to learn the difference. You can't turn a noun into a verb just because you want to. Jesus never said why don't you faith me? Ya think? NOT the same. It is a shame you are teaching so many to follow you to hell. Put down your Baptist dogma and follow the bible. By the way, I cringe every time I hear people like you state with such certainty the thief on the cross was never baptized. I have no idea and neither do you. We know about 90 seconds of his entire life and there were many thousands who had been baptized at that time following John the baptizer 3 1/2 year earlier. You are stating something for which you have absolutely no evidence. Stop doing that nonsense. PHD Actually read and believe the scriptures.
Being born of water is Baptism. It is not phyical birth fluid. The Church never taught this video's teachings. Mark 16v16 is so clear. Baptism is not a work it is God's work through that hands of man. Just like preaching. Faith comes by hearing and earing the word of God. Hearing is not a "work". Dispensational Baptists spend so much time and effort crushing clear verses.
