      Depends a lot on how willing you are to learn another language as well, though.
      A lot of people rely too much on English, and this never really leads anywhere.
      She probably insisted on trying to learn Swedish and stick to that language as much as possible, and probably also checked Swedish/English dictionaries a lot.
      You can learn a lot in just a couple weeks that way.

    • @zoom5024
      @zoom5024 6 лет назад +24

      The fact that she only spoke Swedish for one year and still remebers after what, like 20 years of probably never saying a Swedish word is pretty impressive to say the least. I dont remember anything from my German classes and i finnished school 2 years ago.

    • @Peter_1986
      @Peter_1986 6 лет назад +5

      +toby
      It largely depends on how willing you are to actually use the language yourself.
      One mistake that I often see foreigners make in Sweden is that they use English all the time - they know that we are really good at English in Sweden, so they kinda take advantage of that, and I consider that a big mistake.
      Geena Davis most likely tried her best to understand the Swedish language instead of just relying on English, and this can have amazing results and really help with long-term memory as well.
      You can learn a foreign language very quickly if you always try using it while you live in the country where it's spoken.
      Geena Davis was also married to a Finnish guy (and that's probably why she speaks Swedish with a Finnish accent in this video), and Finnish people tend to know at least a little Swedish since they learn it in school, and some parts of Finland even have Swedish as their official language.

      well nobody really speaks any language properly beqause it takes too much effort i mean whats properly..there are different dialects aswell then we must only have one way to pronounce things, its a very human thing to not pronounce everything. - could you with all the kindness of your`re heart pass me the salt over their to your right my dearest human fellow man friend...thank you i am forever in debt and will try my best to repay you as soon as possible - pass me da sawt...fank you mai. The shorter and easier to pronounce the better, that literally goes for all languages, In russian o’s turns to a’s alot of the time cuz most of the time ist faster and easier, winteeerrr vs winta... so much easier, Är vs E/Ä, va är problemet instead? of vad är problemet? if we dont do these kind of things we are not being efficient, and we would be very slow when communicating, but slang though... if its only slang then it kind of becomes a whole other language, but britain is no stranger to that with the cockney rhyming slang, there was actually a thyming slang culture in Stockholm waaay back where they had a similar thing where they could talk with only slang (Söderslang) and that was in the 1940s but sure i can agree on when theres too much slang it doesnt sound good but as i said spoken language is more effecient when leaving stuff out and choosing easier and faster pronounciation, speaking like a book is not how most people speak and for a reason. If this was a reality then it would be one dialect per language and that would be boring for alot of people which i dare to think is a majority, but then there are preferneces ofcourse and i cant argue against what you think beqause its what you like, i myself like Skånska, Cockney for example, actually if you want to learn a language where there isnt much variation where the dialects arent that shockingly different from each other than russian is a good pick but still, the spoken language still simplify spoken speach and shorten words to make it more effecient like any other language, alot of european languages actually are more consistant from how their sounds matches their writing, so english is actually really confusing beqause of this.

    That was...neat! Out of that short sentence like others have mentioned, great intonation. You can hear a dialect, meaning I can at least place she's not south with us wonky southern speakers xD

    Being in another country, living and studying there and actively learning a language because you are interested, in 1 year you do get really far. It seems commenters here are so astounded to hear "in only 1 year".

    Wow!! That is honestly amazing. If I didn't know she was American and only heard her speak in Swedish, I would honestly guess that she came from Finland or Estonia or something like that. Not the US. At least just based off of this. I could barely hear any of the "typical" American/English accent that most people from English speaking countries usually has. I'm truly so impressed!

    I honestly have no clue who she is (sorry!) but as a Swede this amazes me. She speak with the right rhythm something most English speakers never do. She even speaks in a dialect of sorts, almost like a Swedish speaking Finnish person. And that’s what she learnt after one year here. Very impressive I must say!

    • @hassestockholm

      In the film, Ingrid Bergman exaggerates her Swedish accent very much. The role she plays required a strong Swedish accent. Irl Bergmans English was not perfect but ok. She never mastered the voiced s sound and also had problems separating v and w

    her Swedish is actually quite impressive, no grammar errors and accurate pronunciation, albeit with a Finnish-like accent. I've seen various figures for her IQ online, ranging from 140 to 158, which is genius level, either way she's obviously really smart, and hot too! Also, a very underrated actress!
