    As a middle school science teacher, I get so tired of questions about weed. The school just purchased a small aquaponics system for me to use, but I guess I won't even be able to open the box until maybe August. I'm designing my whole curriculum next year around growing food. Really looking forward to the hardware store system. Stay safe.

      Why is that? I would think as a science teacher you should know and teach the benefits of cannabis.

    Great video and I am eager to look at more of your videos. I am in Alaska and wanting kale over the winter and plan on using this method to start with and test it out. As you are probably aware we have no sunlight over the winter so I will be using grow lights, wish me luck and thank you for the instructional videos.

    On pool noodles all I could find was the big ones. I discovered that if you cut off a little over one third of the disc they fit pretty good.

    Very good info. Thanks for the q and a’s. I have grown lots of lettuce using the kratky method. I’m going to try other plants as well. I really like the pvc pipes and pool noodles I’ll have to find your videos on that method. Looks really cool. I did have one problem with the lettuce growing in my room. I kept getting these tiny flies that was living under the lids of my containers. Once I removed the containers from my room the flies are all gone. I want to try the pvc method I’m sure there won’t be andy fly problems because all the noodles are blocking access to the water. Have you ever heard or seen tiny flies. Not fruit flies but the kind that live near stagnant water. I actually think they may have been breeding in one of the containers. I was using plastic square cookie boxes. Drilled the tops out to hold 5 net cups and used rock wool and lava stones on top. I painted the containers black to keep the algae out. I also used an aquarium pump and stone to provide aeration. Time to check out your other videos. Thanks again!

      The hardware store hydroponics video is not out yet. Your flies can be controlled using yellow sticky traps they are likely aphids. Sounds like you have a good little system going already! Thanks for watching! T

    Thank you so much, this is great help! Where can i learn more about mixing the nutrient solution? Can it be bought off the shelf? Do we have to change it periodically (depending on the plants we are trying to grow i guess)?? Thank you again for this video, this is really awesome!

    • @mefford509
      @mefford509  4 года назад +1

      I have a link for the Fertilizer Kit in the description. It is just measuring the amounts in grams and adding to water. you can/should change out the fertilizer every 3 or 4 weeks, it makes sure the plants have what they need all the time. I am using this fertilizer for tomatoes, lettuce, Kale, Bok Choy... i even have green beans growing out on the bottom of the tall system! Thanks for watching! T

    After first video I was about to try a few things but after this one I saw you mention 'leafy greens', so I was wondering are there plants that would not work well with this system? I was going to try brussel sprouts and broccoli first since I have had trouble with those in my garden.

    • @mefford509
      @mefford509  Год назад

      Unfortunately those two plants, Broccoli and Brussel sprouts would not be a great fit for mason jar hydroponics. BUT they would be fine in a "dutch bucket" system that i outline in another video! Thanks for watching!

    Sorry if you've answered this already I've watched both the mason jar tutorial and this faq.
    My query, so the roots naturally become air roots because of the gap we leave from the water. But do we still need to replace the water on a weekly basis to replenish nutrients once the roots start getting into the water?
    I'm not using any store bought liquid fertilizer, but trying soaking left over fruit peels and a little brown rice in water, soaking 1 sample for 2 weeks, then a second sample for 3 months to see any difference. Thank you.

    • @mefford509
      @mefford509  Год назад

      We need to maintain the water level at about 1/2 full to keep the nutrient roots wet and able to absorb water.
      “Mason jar” is a catchy title - but using a slightly larger container will help the plants stability and reduce the number of times that you need to add nutrient.
      Best wishes with your diy nutrient! Many viewers have shared their efforts in making their own solutions using all sorts of things- mainly manure. ( Wifey blocked all - manure in the house experimenting!)
      Thanks for watching! T

      Tower build has been out for over a month! "mason jar hydroponics evolution" Just search my Channel, it is one of the last videos that I posted. Yes the pool noodle works, But I'm not a huge fan. when the plant gets really big, the noodle will not hold steady. Thanks For watching! T

      There are people who use cannabis for medicinal purposes. No, not talking about "medicinal" [wink] purposes, but actual valid medicinal purposes - such as patients who are prescribed opiates for their medical conditions, like pain from cancer or from a serious car accident, for example, and they can get off dangerous pharmaceuticals as a result, so he should really just either answer the question or ignore it altogether. As for recreational users... so long as you're not sipping on a glass of wine while typing out your disdain for cannabis users, then I have no problem with your position. The drug alcohol has destroyed more lives than cannabis ever will, so people should be consistent with their positions on drugs.
