Flying Through A Sleeping City - Inline Skating City Flow Skate

  • It was like I had the whole city to myself in this inline skating session. Long lines, high speeds and beautiful winter weather. Not only was this one of my favorite recent sessions, it was an unexpected one. I was away for the weekend and decided to bring my skates after looking at the map of the area. I'd never been to this city before, let alone skated through it. On Sunday morning I got out around 8:00 AM and it felt like the whole town was asleep. Absolute bliss on wheels.

      The exploration is such a great aspect of skating urban environments that I didn't see coming when I started skating cities. It's awesome! I go places on skates I wouldn't just walking around or otherwise even touring a town.

      @@SlimmyJimmySonjan I started city/urban skating a little over a year ago, basically when I started this channel. That was after 22 years of no skating of any kind. All my experience prior to that came from pickup roller street hockey, which I stopped doing around 16 years old. Then, at 38 I dusted off my hockey skates and starting shooting around by myself for exercise and fun. Then I found Bill Stoppard's channel, decided to leave the rink and try city skating and now here I am and I've loved every minute of it :)

    Super chill. Inspiring! It's a cool way to see places through the 360 cam. Normally I find myself watching edited skating videos with multiple angles and all that but there is something nice about these long shot ones. Certainly simplifies the editing process eh which frees up more time to do other things. Still gotta get that 360 cam! I would have to head downtown more cause I think shots of my little town might get old heh. Dig the music and the whole vibe!

    • @rerollinginline
      @rerollinginline  2 года назад +1

      Yeah I find the 360 cam ends up capturing the movement well. Certainly not for everyone, but I watch plenty of other videos that are shot the same way. Finding Bill Stoppard's channel is literally when I decided to leave the hockey rink and try urban skating a year ago. And I'm completely new to making any kind of videos. This is certainly the easiest way to film myself and yeah the 360 completely eliminates even needing to be "in frame". I'd like to venture into more cinematic stuff, but I just haven't acquired those skills or the equipment to do that stuff yet.

    Amazing. Few close calls made it somehow even more interesting (not that I encourage making it on purpose, but it shows you’re pushing close to your limits sometimes - pushing to the edge obviously increases your skills as well, so I guess it’s good)

    • @rerollinginline
      @rerollinginline  2 года назад +1

      The close calls in this video are by far the most common for me: when a crack grabs hold of my wheels. It's why one-footed stability and control are so important. I'm able to save myself because if one skate is behaving badly, hopefully the other one is taking over!

      Thanks, I appreciate it! Links to my gear below. One thing I'll say is that I'm not crazy about the knee pads. They're not great quality materials and I've had them slip down during falls in which I still get some road rash. I wear them because they're very slim, so it's just a risk I take knowing they're not the best at protection. That being said, they've definitely helped in falls, but you could do better if protection is the most important.

      @rerollinginline  2 года назад +1

      I love being places I've never been. I did not expect it when I started urban skating, but the exploration aspect of it is a large part of the fun. It's great to just see where the flow takes you as you meander around aimlessly. If you're talking about physical dead ends or obstacles, that's why I've been honing my stopping skills and awareness for months. I didn't even start dong much urban skating until I could stop confidently. What you can't see in the videos is actually how careful I am being. I'm not reckless, even if I'm going very fast. Notice my head and eyes as I skate, they're constantly assessing the situation so that I feel as safe as I can.
      All that being said... this particular city was not a major city (Lancaster, Pennsylvania) like the one I'm usually in (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and it was really quiet with hardly any traffic or pedestrians that morning, so despite the high speeds, it was a very zen-like session.
      Thanks for watching :)

      @rerollinginline  2 года назад

      @@CJDavies Ah yes, I've seen that beauty in the videos on Rich Hayter Skater's channel (check him out if you haven't already!) I'm sure several factors affect it. You don't see much cobblestone in the US because it's a much younger country than most, for example. I'm actually surprised at the road conditions in Philadelphia considering it's one of the oldest cities in the US. I guess it also comes down to local municipalities and how often they update roads, as well as exactly how the construction is done and what materials are used.
      I hope you're still able to get out and enjoy the Scottish scenery on your skates.

    • @rerollinginline
      @rerollinginline  2 года назад

      I think I'm still experimenting to see what I like best. Ultimately, I think it comes down to what you want to do on your skates in a particular session. What I really need is more boots so I can have multiple setups without changing frames. This was recorded in December. I've spaced out my uploads in winter simply because I don't get as many opportunities to capture good footage because of weather. My skates right now have the 5x80 NN Dragon frames. I've got a couple flow skates in those recorded that will be uploaded later.
      I'd like to try some tri-skates as well. I just haven't convinced myself to pull the trigger. My Endless frames have a 3x110 wheel configuration, but it's a much longer wheelbase than would be on a traditional 3x110 setup and so I haven't tried it. That setup is also flat, and I feel like I can't live without my rocker, lol.
      I do intend on doing a "here's the setups I've tried and what I like/dislike about them all" video in the future. Maybe this spring or summer after I've had even more time on them.

      @@rerollinginline Be sure to give the 3x110 setup a try! It’s a cruising monster…super fast and stable and excellent on the open road or trails. Start with the 3x110 on the Endless 90 if you are fearful of tackling the longer wheelbase of the Endless 100. I’m in a size 40 FR1 shell and find the 276 mm wheelbase fairly easy to maneuver. It’s all about pushing through your heels when carving. Have fun!

    • @rerollinginline
      @rerollinginline  2 года назад

      @@endlessblading I've been meaning to try out the 3x110 configuration, so maybe this summer! I'm not fearful of the wheelbase, I'm just usually city skating and prefer the 4 wheel rocker. I prefer a rocker in general vs flat. Love the frames by the way, keep up the good work! I tell everyone you can't go wrong with either of the ones I have (90 and 100). They're both awesome for shredding the city. If Endless hooked up with Adapt and made some rockered 4x90 and 4x100 Quattro frames, I'd be in heaven, lol. Thanks for stopping by and happy skating :)

I’ll be watching for that video where you do some 3x110 cruising. :) I went for a skate yesterday on a new prototype and was reminded how much more power you get from each stride on the flat setup. • @UrMrR1ght

    Could you give some comments regarding the stability of the Endless 4x100? Just for those who don’t have experience with them yet. :)

    • @rerollinginline
      @rerollinginline  2 года назад +2

      To me, they're very stable and I personally feel safe on them. It's worth mentioning that my feet are 265mm long and these frames have a wheelbase of 303mm so they're a good bit longer than my foot. Even my Endless 90 have a wheelbase of 276mm, which is also longer than my foot. I felt stable on my 90s and even more stable on my 100s. The experience may be different for people with larger or smaller feet.
      I regularly go down hills backwards for example in them. In terms of higher speeds, I like a good hill bomb, but I don't do anything crazy and I'm not a "downhill skater", but I've never gotten any speed wobbles on them. Again, I probably don't exceed more than ~25mph during my sessions. I like city skating so pure top speed isn't necessarily my goal. As far as general skating or wizard moves etc they're also very stable.
      As far as the rocker vs being flat, it's hard for me to tell because I can't stand a flat setup and so my baseline for stability is rockered. I also rotate the wheels to keep the rocker as close to the "intended rocker" of the frame as possible instead of letting the rocker become more pronounced as I wear in the wheels.

      @@ny_toto Absolutely. Skating is an amazing cardio, core and lower body workout. Adding skating 5 days per week was the only change I made to my routine and I got in great cardio shape and lost weight. It’s like anything else - you’ll get what you put into it. If you’re just casually cruising and not really getting the heart rate up, you won’t get much out of it. But if you push yourself and focus on getting a workout, it’s there to get. Of course diet plays a role in weight loss as well as other factors. But yes, skating can get you very fit. Finding skating was the best thing to happen to my body in a long time. It’s exercise I love getting. It’s never a chore. And unless you’re doing a lot of jumping etc, it’s very low impact. Also the mental health benefits have been amazing too. I use Insta360 Studio on my Mac laptop. I export my reframed 360 videos and then import them into iMovie to make the final edit, add music etc. If I need more than iMovie can do (which is seldom) I'll use Adobe Premiere.
      As for exporting from Insta360 studio, I put the bitrate up as far as it'll go (200Mbps), keep everything else as default and check the 'Remove Grain' box. There used to be another checkbox for colors in Studio 2021, but in 2022 looks like that option is gone. So settings are:
      Bitrate: 200 (this might be most important)
      Resolution :1920 x 1080
      Frame Rate: 29.97
      Encoding Format: H.264
