Can You REALLY Power Christmas Lights with Solar Panels in Winter!?

- Solar-powered Christmas lights in Scotland's winter? We only get 1.4 hours of sunshine... Thanks to www.PCBWay.com... for "powering" the channel over the last couple of years.
It's winter, and there's not much sun - but let's give it a go. Find out if it's actually feasible or possible.
The calculator I used for the amount of sunlight is here: www.pveducatio...

Thanks for watching everyone - Have a Happy Christmas and New Year!
I built one 2 years ago but with 3 NiMH AA cells. Used a solar panel like yours. 7 LEDs with each having a 2 transistor current mirror for 5mA.
Canadian weather doesn't allow the use of lithium batteries outside.
It's -10ºC now at 5:10AM and I see the LEDs all stuck at red because the battery is so low, that can only power the red portion of the flashing led.
In the summer, it blinks all night and power to spare. Looking beautiful all night long...
Have great xmas and happy new year.
I built a solar charger setup for some wireless Arlo Pro 2 cameras.
It took a LOT of fiddling with that same charging board used in the video (and even some help from internet buddies with greater knowhow then me).
I ultimately dropped the charging board but used two Wasserstein Solar Panels in parallel (about 7v 1a max output) a 5v XH-M131 photo resistor relay board, some soldering, and some 3d printing to get the cameras to charge/be powered reliably without draining the batteries.
They've worked reliably since, in sun, rain, snow and cloudy/overcase sky.
You need to team up with a maker from far south, so you could send power to each other. This is the miracle engineers try to solve: how to transport energy long distance. And be happy you have seen the sun in Edinburgh. I am living south of Berlin, and not seen anything else than grey clouds for days. However, Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas!
We will never know who goes to Scotland anyway. Fist time it was cold and the wind was biting, the second time the wind was warm but still biting. 🙂
I wonder how much more energy you would get if you put the setup outside your window, windows are known to reflect and absorb 😉
I think at least 2-3 times.
A silly idea, but it seems almost reasonable - not just 'feasible' - to make an outdoors strand of LEDs, with a solar panel between each LED. Kind of like how you see santa/snowman/santa/snowman light strands, or such an alternating style :)
Are you able to share any details on the battery discharger you use in this video please?
Yep... power with solar in Northern Ohio winter.
Does that little charger board thingie do maximum power point tracking, like a TI BQ25504? Merry Christmas Chris.
No, it's a pretty basic charging board. The BQ25504 looks very interesting. Have a great Christmas!
I am trying to design a floating in air addressable RGBW LED based on the Fan Hologram design, anyone up to the task?
