    Great explanation. It’s worth pointing out that Toyota’s limit is now 80kg for the 2023 Prado roof. By the time I put a Rhino platform, Oztent and awning on the roof, there isn’t much capacity left for anything else.

    G’day Nathan. Excellent video and explanation of ALL necessary details to know. That’s what we like on your work, don’t have to ask twice. I am sold on the Rhino system your size for my 200series. Not bought yet for simple reasons. A. Current Garage free door height. B. What I need to put on the roof while leaving the caravan behind on excursion trips with 2 people only? To find out learning by doing. The only thing you left out to describe is the washing/cleaning of the roof under the rack. Another subject I would be interested in and could not find yet is if someone make a slide for under the rack to carry thin solar panels as a pull out version. Sure for No sunroof version 200 series only. Cheers

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Holger. Again, appreciate the on-going support and the comments.
      Your reasons for not purchasing yet are understandable. I am lucky, although only just this roof rack does fit into my garage, but this will be an issue for many people.
      Your reasoning about whether or not you actually need it for your setup is one that is so overlooked these days. People just buy modifications for the point of buying them, but it's good to see you're making that decision based on your personal needs.
      In regards to washing side of things, I have got a plan in the future to do a washing/car protection video series in the future (just waiting for a dirty trip!), however I can say that the roof rack has made it difficult, but not impossible.
      I have seen a couple of companies that make slide to mount underneath the Rhino rack, however I can't be sure as to whether they are bolt on or not. I personally choose to mount of top over a sliding under slide panel for a couple of reasons. A. Mounting at the front will prevent the sunroof from operating B. Mounting at the rear - the sliding mechanism would interfere with the opening of the rear tail gate.
      A sliding solar panel would be a great idea though, just a little more work involved.
      Thanks again, Nathan.

    I love your family tent setup, FYI - your roof will no doubt be overloaded when talking Rhino Racks specs, I too have the Pioneer rack and deeply regret it after I found out their cheeky fine print that virtually says "off sealed roads their load rating is about 30kg" which is pathetic, considering your roof can do 150kg, its more just to keep in mind that even Rhino Rack don't trust their system to hold much weight.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  2 года назад

      Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed the video.
      I'd be interested to see the fine print you mention here. All the data I could find suggested a percentage of total rating for an 'off-road' rating. I've worked this out to be a fair bit more that 30kg, but happy to stand corrected.
      Cheers, Nathan.

    This is very informed. Thank you. some questions: Did you contemplate a smaller rack to avoid covering the sunroof, do you get much noise, did you contemplate an alternative vendor ARB etc?

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  2 года назад

      Thanks mate, appreciate the feedback.
      So yes, did consider the smaller rack, however I prefer the extra storage/working space on the rack and this benefit outweighs keeping the view from the sunroof. The sunroof still opens and angles as per normal, so it's functionality isn't inhibited as such.
      Further, when I purchased this the ARB base rack hadn't been released yet, but if I was buying now it would be considered.
      Cheers, Nathan.

      Hmm, it definitely pays to know some of the more 'boring' facts sometimes. Saying this, the 200 series has very different mounts when compared to some of the dual cab ute models.

  • @shreckm6470
    @shreckm6470 4 года назад

    Not overly happy with Rhino rack I just put on my Ranger I think it comes to far forward and if it was 300mm shorter the wind noise would be improved dramatically. The wind noise at the moment is over the top loud and I have used many types of racks but always had them set back from the angle of the windscreen. There is a broblem with noise because Rhino make a wind foil for the rack at yet another considerable outlay of cash. Must mention that other than the noise I am very happy with the rack.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  4 года назад

      Interesting to hear that. I'm going to assume that Rhino Rack have probably tried the maximise the space and rack size on the dual cab ute, therefore bringing the front of the rack further forward.
      That sure is a frustrating and annoying regarding potentially having to spend more money on more products.
      Is this rack the new design they have? I believe their new platform system has a angled front edge, with the intent to keep wind noise down.
      Thanks for sharing your experience, good to hear all opinions.
      Cheers, Nathan.

    200-500 Kg to be SUPPORTED properly you are look towards a full exoskeleton roll cage with rack build on the top
    something rated for 200kg on road realistically has has a weight limit between 50-100kg though i wouldn't go much above 50-75kg..
    because water channels aren't designed to be anchor points for the roof racks..
    the only way i would anchor to the to a roof with the above roof rack or any other roof rack for that matter is gut the roof lining a weld in 1-2 inch thick metal and dynabolt the fucker to the roof..
    though my opinion the exoskeleton is a better option as affixes to at 8-10 points on the vehicle at the bull bar,, engine side guard foot well/rock slide rear leg is 1 welded piece whether the rear attaches under the wheel well or off the rear end on the rear bumper pending what you do with your rear windows if you are into boating without a trailer on a 8-9 foot tinnie which bolts to the rack for transport

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  2 года назад

      For sure, there are definitely some good points when considering loading that much weight onto a roof.
      Luckily I'm never in that sort of weight range and this is not only a much simpler and easier system to install, but adequate for my needs at the moment 👍

      @jasonhowe1697 2 года назад

      @@XploringOz problem is even at a 250kg off road opposed to on road rating of 500kg you are at 125-250 kg, though looking at the crap the that has plagued the 4x4 accessory market shit made of thin metal 25-75 kg is about the max weight it is rated for, this is a test on the rack if you can bend it if you put a slat on a brick or 2 and you can physically bend it by walking on it it tells you the weight it can carry, which is vastly different the the bs you might be fed by the manufacturer of said product
      if you want to correctly carry load including a tinnie this would be the only way to it both structurally and legally...
      otherwise you ripping out the head liner and welding support brackets to dyno bolt the expensive cheap arse rack on the roof's rain channel that was never designed to hold a rack to the roof in the 1st place...
