  • 2024 is undoubtedly a massive year for McLaren across the board, most notably in Formula 1 and INDYCAR. Here's my take.

No Point of watching Formula E in the UK now, considering it's no longer free to watch when you can get GT3 racing. What provides better racing and is free

I think another series where McLaren need to show up is WEC. While the 2 LMGT3 cars aren't factory efforts (due to the rules), they are as close to factory as possible with United Autosport (Zac Browns sportscar team) running the 2 cars and running McLaren liveries instead of the United Autosport colours. This is similar to other teams that have very close links to the manufacturer like AF Corse with Ferrari, Manthey with Porsche (being partly owned by Porsche).
It will be McLarens first time back at Le Mans since 1998 and their 5th ever entry for the race as a manufacturer.

Garage 59 is closer to a factory team for McLaren imo.

I understand if they don't want to commit to LMH but United has experience with LMP2 so an LMDh effort can't be too much to ask surely.. If THoR can do it with Aston and LMH then McLaren can with United and LMDh. Please.

@@jorhop4005 For GT sure but not prototype.

@F1ll1nTh3Blanks The problems with if McLaren start a LMDh project now, the earliest it will be ready is 2026. The current LMH and LMDh rulesets are homologated up until 2027 (that's not to say they will be gone after 2027 but likely by 2030 when the ACO want a Hydrogen only top class). So it is alot of money for McLaren for minimum 2 years of racing.
HoR could more or less enter WEC with the current Valkyrie, it wouldn't be as quick or reliable as it could be due to lack of testing but it would be able to race. Basically all HoR have to do is test the car not wait for the car to be developed from scratch (there are probably still some changes being made but the base of the car is there)
But on that note, I would still want to see McLaren enter, they have been talking about entering top-level sportscar racing since 2018 and Zak Brown keeps saying it is "under review" since like 2019. So I am not going to be holding my breath for them to actually join.
I also would want to see United run a Hypercar as a customer team if McLarendont join. They wouldn't run Ferrari, Alpine, Honda/Acura, maybe not Porsche or Lamborghini when (if) Auid joins F1. I think Cadillac would be the best option due to no clash with F1, they use Chevy engines in IndyCar (mainly because they don't want to run Honda after what happened in F1), they only have clash in GT racing but I don't think that is a huge issue (look at Proton).

McLaren are also expanding in sportscars a lot this year with Zak's team United Autosports bringing McLaren to the WEC and back to Le Mans, Pfaff running a factory car in IMSA, and McLaren returning to DTM with a factory driver.

Right now it seems mclaren is just another racing team having not been highly successful in recent. With all the talent in the papaya pipeline, this year will be pivotal for Mclarens future if they ever hope to return to the top of the racing world.
