The level of playing is SO HIGH nowadays. Like these players have technique head and shoulders above the last generation of university professors. It's insane
Was thinking about this myself but it’s gotta be a credit to the invention of the internet. Resources are more widely available but more importantly you can see what others across the world are doing. Huge advantage to this generation but all but really to anyone that plays if you’re willing to put in the time. Practice time has to be through the rough.
@@staceylewisdesigns completely agree. especially for something niche like classical saxophone - back the 90s when I was a young player, you were lucky to get a local sax professor's recordings as an auditory example, and those might be...not great. in college you could sometimes interlibrary loan CDs but it was a lot of work. now everyone from Mule to Bornkamp and the crazy new generation can be heard instantly. amazing
Such an amazing competition, where life long friendships are made. I went in 2006, and 2010 (advanced as one of 16 semi-finalists that year). Cherished memories!!!
Classical sax players are crazy, the sound that comes out of these players is pure tone and body. If i had the time and money to invest into the classical side of saxophone I would but I'll keep my focus on jazz for now.
Thanks Nathan for the shoutout! This was really such a fun experience; made so many great connections and of course got way better at the saxophone. I’ll see you at the next NASA!
We will ALWAYS be our own worst critic - thanks for the shoutout and thoughtful words as always, Saxo! :) It was such an awesome experience to share that stage with so many amazing artists and friends. Thanks for shining a light on the classical side of the profession!
I played in first Adolphe Sax competition in 1994. There wasn’t any pre-screening then, just fill out a form and send in your entry fee. It was a great experience, even though I didn’t make it past the first round. Meeting and hearing the top saxophonists from all over the world was amazing. I’m glad the competition has grown and has pushed us saxophonists to new levels.
YESSS! friends and I from my uni's sax studio have been watching like it's sports lmao. Didn't expect anyone with any kind of following to post about it!
It's not just the audio. The hall in that room is floor-to-ceiling carpet. It's not really made very well for instrumentalists. It's great for the exact reason you mentioned though, because it immediately gives away a person's weakness in their sound, tone, technique, etc.
A good video. Extremely talented sax players. But the best part, no sales pitch. Just the good ol’ Nathan that attracted us to his channel in the first place.
11:08 I know for a fact you have heard that piece! In the Snob video you made with Jacob Bernat, he was playing it at the beginning! Two preludes by Dorothy Chang! Although you may not have heard the full piece I guess.
Hey man, you probably wont see this but i wanted to let you know. I have been watching your videos since i started playing alto almost 4 years ago in 4th grade and you have inspired me so much. Whenever I am struggling on something I check your channel and you almost always have a video to help. By watching and learning from your videos you have helped me get into my school jazz ensemble. My schools jazz band actually won the national jazz festival in philly last year and I get to go back with them this year. Another thing I might be doing is playing the anthen at a minor league baseball game in my state ON MY OWN as well as doing the same stadium with my school band later in the year. I also got to play at a hockey game with my school band. I thought of giving up on sax before I went into middle school and watching your videos stopped me from doing that. So thank you for making these videos and helping me through my sax journey❤ btw i dont even take private lessons and watching your videos are like private lessons. So once again THANK YOU❤
Hey man, i know it’s kinda random but I’ve been watching your vids since i was in middle school and i i’m now a sophomore in hs now and i just wanted to say thanks for growing my love for saxophone, you inspired me so much to want to even try to get good as you.
When I found out Dmitry Pinchuk was 17 when he competed I nearly lost my mind. I should probably just melt my horn down into jewelry at this point lmao
NGL. I hate music competitions. Its why I kept dropping out of high school band. I feel like these competitions are just one manifestation of the deeply flawed social relations we've built in the past few hundred years. Music should be enjoyed. Its not a sport. Edit: I did my undergrad as a Jazz Studies | Anthropology double major and am getting a masters in both anthro and ethnousicology. I can play lmao its not a jealousy thing
I just got into junior all state jazz in Indiana as first tenor. I’m in eight grade, I’m gonna try out a grade one solo for Issma as well. Wish me well!!! I’m super nervous
How does the technical bar keep getting higher -- is it because of the internet and what it affords insofar as teaching tools? This is like saxophone as a sport, wild.
that's him, a lot of the russian school are constantly working alongside each other, as other studios do i suppose, the other 2 Russian Adolphe Sax winners in that vid lol
the 1st stage roome is the badest room ive ever play. it has no accustic at all, its hard to play and everyone can hear everything. it was like that when i was playing there. good work keep up =)
Nathan how's your throat? incredible playin on your band btw Everything Yes, but i notice you kinda idk, like in pain ? you're not right? i hope you're fine, man
Saxophones can be so annoying playing this type of classical music, especially when they have overly bright tones. A bright tone is good in a loud mic-less setting because it can be powerful, but when there is a microphone present, a darker tone is usually desirable, at least ! Saxophones should be known for blending well, both with each other and with other orchestral instruments. That's because they really can do this beautifully. But, people focus on fast solo passages, and the initially obvious sacrifices in tone quality are just accepted as normal, I guess. Maybe much of this stuff is slower than many violin audition pieces, but it is obviously too fast for a saxophone with the clicking noises and such. And auditions still test this crazy fast shit for some reason haha. In jazz, it's different somehow - I don't know why (not only do the clicks seem to matter less, but you can't hear the clicks anyway. Maybe the ride cymbal covers them for the most part). This is why so many orchestral musicians look down on saxophonists, even though saxophones can enhance the orchestral sound! I respect the dedication to the craft by these incredible musicians. And they ALL sound great! But I'm just playing devil's advocate. Also, look at the background behind Nathan. It's Bird!! Not some fucking classical cat... Classical saxophonists have to figure their shit out in my opinion - by not listening to these crazy Russians (and I'm a crazy Russian (just way less skilled))!!
Some of these performers are playing with great Technical ability, but with crappy tones. They need to play a great jazz set up like a Meyer 7MM, or Otto Link slant signature
itʼs really sad that you don’t tell about the fact: russia is a terrorist country. and the organizers had to admit the russians only with a public statement that they condemn war on the territory of Ukraine. music cannot be outside of politics, because Ukrainian musicians protect the territorial integrity of Ukraine and pay for it with their lives, instead of going to international competitions
Hey Nathan, I was just thinking that it would be great if you played each of your saxophones to compare the sound of each of them, and kind of look at each one you gained through the years. You probably won't read this though 🥲

Dr. Page! I hope to see you next year as I apply for UT. You judged me at State last year :)
@@hubr5827I'll look forward to it!! Reach out anytime if you'd like to connect for a lesson or tour of the school!

Doing a deep dive on Dmitry Pinchuk now.....dude sounded better in 5th grade than I've ever sounded in my life!

Yes Classical content! Also the production quality was great in this video!
Thank you Saxlogic, now I understand.

Really refreshing to see the sax taken to ultimate consequences!
You two are so hilarious 😂 lol 😆. This is my first time watching this, but it won’t be my last.. it was a pleasure to see this clip.
these types of guys are all why I didn’t keep going in classical saxophone! Such talent!
God man shining some light on the classical sax.

And hes only 17 years old
Good stuff....
very entertaining
Dmitry is 17 and also the champion this year (I think)
Guess I’ll go visit Dinant soon.
Landon Chang up and coming. Keep your eye on this kid! Grad student at Eastman.
It's sad that being named one of the best classical saxophonists in the world only nets you 9000 euro :(
Your reddit post on r/Crossview just taught me how to crossview. I’ve always parallel viewed. Thank you.

Somebody get this guy a participation trophy
@dmzhockey94 do you play music to compete? I feel like music competitions are pretty arbitrary
Do you think you can make another cheap sax review video?
I just got into junior all state jazz in Indiana as first tenor. I’m in eight grade, I’m gonna try out a grade one solo for Issma as well. Wish me well!!! I’m super nervous
6:25 not right now … 😂😂😂😂😂
you mean to say that i live in belgium, and i am a saxophonist.... but i didnt know about this competition? damn
Please do a reaction to the finals / winner
I didn’t know it was that difficult! My teacher is competing in that damn.
Lets hope ‘muricans win
Why is it when i make the noises at 14:35 its bad
No control
How does the technical bar keep getting higher -- is it because of the internet and what it affords insofar as teaching tools?
This is like saxophone as a sport, wild.
Yo I saw Andrew in Nashville talking to Tim McCallister after a sax concerto didnt realize he was fiends with saxologic
I need to know how you get this good, I just don’t get it
Yo, is "Charles Lilley" also named Chad? That threw me for a loop for a second 🤪
I thought I played the saxophone.
First comet let’s go. I play the saxophone and I love your videos
I totally get it’s extremely difficult but ask yourself, how did it go?
Where’s the tune?
Am I crazy or is it Sergey Kolesov turning the piano pages on 2:01 ?🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
that's him, a lot of the russian school are constantly working alongside each other, as other studios do i suppose, the other 2 Russian Adolphe Sax winners in that vid lol
Dmitry Pinchuk, born on December 3, 2005, OMG WTF...!!!
TIL that there is a World Cup for saxophone players that happens every 4 year.
Great! Thanks.
What about making a review of bss s series alto mouthpiece?

Andorra sax fest is much harder, more participants, the best players in the world and also great pieces.
Seriously?)))))

Agreed, especially when compared to the tones of the jazz greats which are all so unique and filled with character
But it’s a classical competition
Why would we use a jazz setup for a classical saxophone competition
is this b8

Hey Nathan, I was just thinking that it would be great if you played each of your saxophones to compare the sound of each of them, and kind of look at each one you gained through the years. You probably won't read this though 🥲
So I just start thinking maybe I’m at least a decent classical player and then………THIS. 🫣Thanks a lot guys. 😢
