Fabulous animation, and what a wonderful story. The townspeople could have gone the way of punishment and revenge, but chose rehabilitation instead. A lesson still applicable today.
Yeah, for somebody who was caught red-handed attempting to physically damage little children, the most apt reward would be to clean his house and groom him in a saloon.
I grew up on these old cartoons. My grandparents were nearly 100 when I stayed at their house all the time lol. They remembered a time before cameras and cartoons.
If it wasn't for the stiff competition between the Walt Disney studios and the Fleischer brothers, animation would never have come to this level almost 90 years ago. And it still is lovely to watch!
Good happy ending. I have seen lots of old cartoons but never this one. The 3D backgrounds in Fleischer cartoons always intrigued me as a kid and still do. Classic.
The technique is called Rotoscope and mainly consists of recording a live background and then animating on top of it in order to give that effect. Max Fleischer created this technique. The guy was never black, he was just plain dirty. African Americans in those times were portrayed in a very different way.... 1:47 Anyways I just posted the commentary track for this cartoon so check it out
That is NOT the Rotoscope. It's the Stereoptical Process, which is displayed at the bottom of the Paramount header. The Rotoscope was Max Flesicher's first invention from 100 years ago, where live action film footage could be traced to make realistic animation. This was many times use as reference footage for enhancing action in animation, reworked to conform to the proportions of the character, and not always used as a literal tracing of the live action model. The Rotoscope was also used to define reference points to register animation and matte art for compositing animation and matte art with live action footage. You may be interested in the book, THE ART AND INVENTIONS OF MAX FLEISCHER: AMERICAN ANIMATION PIONEER. This and many of the other secrets in how these cartoons were made are explained.
Frank Limen: Yes, Max Fleisher was a MASTER of special effects animation, especially 3D images. He would build small 3D models then superimpose them onto the films to create that effect.
@@spy4863 And Max still doesnt get the credit he deserves. Actually ANYONE other than Walt Disney is often ignored!!! Even Tex Avery doesnt get his due or Bill Melendez. But yes. Max was such a pioneer! And Walt "borrowed" alot of his techniques for his features like rotoscoping and these moving backgrounds
It was the other way around. Fleischer was not competing with Disney. In fact he had been producing cartoons while Disney was still in high school. People forget that he was a pioneer of animation going back to 1918.
I've gotta say, I've seen some old cartoons growing up, but not this one. This one has got to be one of the best with easily the best message and intentions behind it besides being a fun cartoon. The whole thing of it takes a village to raise a child basically, and how someone can do wrong but instead of outright punishment instead redeem them, and then the end with showing how greed brings misery but friendliness brings joy
Some sequences of this fantastic animation treasure are likely actual material props in front of a camera, Fleischer was a pioneer in the art of rotoscoping. The 'rotating mill is on screen' sequence and the 'duck running to town' sequence are likely props with the cartoons somehow added in later.
The Color Classics are long overdue for proper scans and restorations of the true colors. While some have been done, LITTLE DUTCH MILL has not been restored as yet.
Prefer these older toons to modern digitised ones. Interesting too for historical research into what our grandparents and parents were offered as part of their more regular cinema visits. Love Max and Dave’s creativity. Have a playlist now which is almost exclusively filled with Fleischer bros works. No spring chicken myself these days but i still like animations more than most live action movies. Hope you tube manages to get rights to put more of this wonderful stuff on here for us. Great job they’ve done so far and they have my gratitude. 🎸

The beauty of the messages in the old cartoons. Badness is transformed into goodness with kindness and the whole community prospers. There is faith in goodness and badness can be redeemed. Compare this to today's messages.
Thanks Ray Pointer - I was wondering. That would explain the 3D FOREgrounds, which you can see in the scene with the shoes on the doorsteps. That was what amazed me: those stair steps & how they accurately showed foreground-perspective
@@susanvaughan-schiele210The concepts were slightly different. Disney's multiplane camera was different layers of 2D-images, but the stereoptical process used actual 3D-models.

Doesn't anyone else admire the way the whole town came to help, and instead of lynching the guy the rehabilitated him?
What great technique and mastery of film. Amazing to think Fleischer managed all of this in the 30s with limited editing capabilities.
