You don't really think about it when you're a kid, it's only when you're an adult that you realize the mother gave her children the only food they had without ever eating a bit for herself, or that she's noticeably very thin, even compared to her children. You don't understand why she's crying when the boy says he's still hungry. You don't appreciate the mother's love and devotion to her children until you're much older and can fully understand everything that's happening. Also, the fact that it's obvious the townsfolk are leaving firewood out for the kids to pick up because they know things are tough for them and are trying to help. They may not have even realized how bad off they were until they went to see their children's mother after the children were in bed . . . The little boy poking himself with a fork at the end after they both stop eating for a moment because they think it might still be a dream still gets me . . . They can't believe it, that this feast and the toys and all the nice things are for them . . .
I've seen this cartoon tons of times since my mom first bought it as a $1 Christmas cartoon compilation VHS when I was 8 (and now have it on DVD with a bunch of other older ones - actually stumbled upon this while looking for old songs from Halloween cartoons) and never realized the wood was purposely being left for them. Still catching things from it almost 30 years later. Go figure. *As an added bonus, check out the obvious "blooper". When they go to sleep the girl's green dress is hanging in between the two beds. When they first wake up it's not there, and then when they show the guys hiding outside their bedroom door it's hanging there again. :)
I love how the boy cheers his mother up by saying it's alright, I was only joking (or something like that). And I agree. Appreciate what you have and don't feel like you are without.
And being grateful for what they have like good food, loving parents and a comfortable roof over their heads. I'm only a millennial (for lack of a better word) and I'm already seeing a startling lack of heart and humility in the younger generation, like too many members of generation z. Maybe it's the effects of social media.
@Sweet Pea Why are you being such a disgustingly negative jerkwad about it? 1. You don't know that the mother doesn't work. You barely see her at all. Even if she doesn't work, you make it sound SO easy to just go out and get a job at any time. I've been trying for well over a year with no success, and the job market was MUCH worse back when this cartoon was made. 2. For all you know, those kids CHOSE to go out and look for firewood, or were doing so on their way home from school. The kids already demonstrated how loving and considerate they are by how they treat each other and their mother. You could learn a lot from them about being a decent human being. 3. Their mother cried because she felt guilty for not being able to feed her kids better. Nobody "forced" the boy to "comfort" her. You should be far more disgusted by the thought of the mother NOT crying and the boy NOT trying to cheer her up. Why would you want people to NOT have compassion for each other? 4. You know damn well that those children are not even remotely supposed to represent abuse victims. Hell, not even victims of neglect, as the mother clearly loves them and is very obviously starving herself in order to feed them. You should be ashamed of yourself for your attitude. If you're trying to be funny, you failed MISERABLY.
In my opinion this was made during the Great Depression, which ended around 1939 with USA entering WW2, the Government paid a small wage to movie and film makers to keep people employed, entertained and quite a bit of propaganda too.
World War 2 started in Europe in 1939. The United States didn't get involved in the fighting in WWII until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
"The Great Depression was the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world, lasting from the stock market crash of 1929 to 1939." www.history.com/topics/great-depression/great-depression-history It was made during the Great Depression. The lack of food was a fitting subject for the time period.
This cartoon was made in 1936 in the middle of the depression, people went to bed hungry in those years and it left a lasting impression on those who lived through it like my parents, when I grew up in the 1950’s and 1960’s people still talked about those times and how hard life was back then and this cartoon is a window into that time in America
We saw the lingering effects of the Great Depression in the black-and-white photos of our WW2 army, navy, marines, army air force young men. They were extremely skinny, although not stunted in height. You see it best in WW2 navy photos taken on ships in the Pacific campaigns. The weather tended to be hot while sailing in the Central and South Pacific. While resting on deck, young Navy men could take off their shirts and sunbathe. It is astonishing to see how skinny these young men were compared to the same age group today where health experts admonish them on being overweight. My late father was only a child during the height of the Great Depression. He doesn't remember it but he was ingrained with the social values that came out of it which meant being stoic in the face of hardship and thrifty with one's money. You spent money only when you really had to. My late father would never understand why I, as an adult would purchase the things I did. And he was astonished when I purchased multiples of the same items. As he had grown up, you bought something only when you needed it. Of course he did have one foot in the door when the United States entered the era of prosperity in the mid-1950s while he was still a young man. That is when he purchase luxury items, but rarely, such as a radio, a new watch, and a black and white television. In his generation, you kept and used items until they were worn out and could not be repaired. I understood this and felt sympathy for him. But the generations that came after me, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z, are far more spendthrift than my Boomer generation ever was.
@@jeffyoung60 idk about the others, but many gen z don’t really spend alot pf momey on buying new things. There are a few exceptions, but the fact is that prices are rising everday and I’m afraid we’ll enter a new depression. Well, I’m not from the USA so idk how my gen acts there
@@mtlicq In my Dreamland, you’ll never grow up or have a care in the world. There will be lots of nice people, woodland critters, plenty of flowers, fruits, vegetables, and big, tall trees. Never any pollution, criminals or bad incidents.
This cartoon made me so grateful for what I had as a kid. My mom would tell me stories about her growing up in Mexico in conditions just like these. Fucking tears my heart up knowing children out there have to go through this.
On RUclips a few years back, a young, educated Mexican woman explained Mexico's 60 mil population this way. 10 mil are in the extremely wealthy to well-to-do class. 10 mil are in the upper middle class. 10 mil are living securely in the middle-middle class. 10 mil are living okay in the lower middle class and working class jobs with good pay. The last 20 mil are the impoverished Mexicans eking out a living, from poorly-paid working class jobs to the underemployed, unemployed, and indigent. It is largely from this group that the desperate seek a better life in the U.S. There are always those from the higher classes going to the U.S. for even better opportunities, school, marriage, etc. It's not meant to be a criticism but to explain it better to those outside of Mexico that things aren't bad for everyone, just for those in the bottom of the social economic ladder. This is meant to overturn the stereotype that every Mexican is desperate to emigrate to the U.S. Actually, most don't because they're doing either very well or okay.
manager-nim: Of course you know why. It's because that's exactly what a little kid would do to remove the sadness from his mother's heart, and it is such a selfless act by those at the bottom of the power structure, little kids living in poverty. Anything to stop his mother from crying when she had had nothing at all to eat. Look at the photos of the Depression that are readily available on line. Look at the endlessly deep hopelessness in the eyes of the adults, who are desperate to give their children even the minimum. While the Fleischers were telling the children viewing their cartoon a happy fairy tale, they were being very didactic towards the adults sitting next to their kids in the theater before the Three Stooges short and the main feature came on. "If you have a way to help the poor, do so. Can you live with yourself while hungry little children are being more selfless than you?"
I remember watching this as a child with an empty stomach. I never had the same ending here but I was grateful for whatever we had nonetheless. As an adult now, I make sure my children will never experience hunger the same way I did. This was the one animation that has always stuck with me into my adulthood. Thank you.
This is the sort of animation I would show to my future children if I ever married and started a family of my own. They'd be exposed to only the best of traditional/classic animation and children's programming, the stuff from the 1930s-1990s that I greatly enjoyed as a kid growing up in the '90s. Stories like this weren't merely cartoons in my opinion but a magical artform. They carried beautiful messages that encouraged and lifted young people up, not dumbed them down or tore them down.
@@vitoriarodrigues5700 Get a life, it's a cartoon. Why do people come on these comment sections to to scream racism, and liberal ideology when we're just trying to enjoy the sweetness and innocence of precious children.
@@vitoriarodrigues5700 Some of them were, many were not. I'm mixed part black, part white, and was rarely offended growing up looking at the majority of the old animation because for the most part, there was nothing to be offended by. I grew up mainly on Looney Tunes, Betty Boop, The Flintstones, The Jetsons and the classic Disney animation. I've also been a feminist and believer in women's rights and gender equality since I was a kid. A person can definitely leave the bad parts behind and take the good parts.
Mother was born in 1926, and was raised with her sister and two brothers by their mom, who had to leave a perverted and abusive man behind. They were very poor, no plumbing, carried water from the river, and kerosene lamps for lighting. Mother used to tell about how sad Grandmother was when she had hardly enough for a Christmas chicken. She wanted a gift for each of the kids, but ended up buying, through the (Montgomery Ward?) catalog, one set of china doll dishes to be shared by the girls. Imagine her surprise when the package arrived, and there were 2 sets of doll dishes. She was so thankful to God, and the girls enjoyed them for many years. I still have one little milk pitcher.
O my God that sounds like my Grandparents (rip) and my Mom (rip) and her brothers and sisters and us as children. We use to dream about stuff in sears catalog, but never recieved. 30s-70/Early80s. Not much changed for us.

I remember the times I went without, so that my children wouldn't. They grew up to be healthy, successful adults. More importantly, kind and humble. Thank you God. 🤧❤🙏
This cartoon traumatized me as a child, and for nearly 20 years I couldn't even THINK about it without tearing up. Watching it again after all this time has been strangely cathartic. I'm glad I'm not the only person who was deeply affected by this. Also, you have to love 1930s animation!
Molly Pond No you were not I also felt sad about this cartoon I always took it as an example of how lucky I have it plus good animation and a good message with it as well.
Oh molly, same here. We just moved from Dallas back to Paris. My dad put this VHS on and the part where the mom cries killed me. I ran to my parents and cried to hard... However, I went back and forwarded that part and pressed play like 10 times. I remember this as if it were yesterday and I'm 32 now... Still hurts me. xx
GOD BLESS YOU FERNANDO GASTELO FOR UPLOADING THIS, IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS CARTOON FOR 20 YEARS SINCE MY MOTHER DIED, I HAVE BEEN REUNITED WITH IT TODAY BECAUSE OF YOU...THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I DONT KNOW WHAT YOUR BACKGROUND IS, BUT IT JUST GOES TO SHOW YA, NO MATTER WHERE WE ALL CAME FROM, WHAT ETHNICITY WE ALL ARE, WE HAVE THE SAME LIKES, SAME HOPES , SAME DREAMS, THANK YOU MY BROTHER!

Thank you sylamsyntax23 for the kind words. I agree no matter where we come from, our values and heart are what define us. I love this cartoon as a remainder of what we have and others don't and to always strive for the betterment of everyone as a community. Sadly i seen kids like the ones depicted on this cartoon as I was growing up and I would never forget.
This broke my heart. So many children suffered during the great depression. My grandmother talked about how hard it was. I am so thankful for the good people in this world that help those in need. I love children and people of all ages. I wish no one had to suffer. I pray that everyone is well and blessed ❤
I first saw this cartoon when I was probably five or six, I had a big 6-hour tape collection of miscellaneous cartoons. It has always stuck with me as a favorite. I'm so glad to find it's been uploaded here, as every time I'm sad, watching it helps me out.
Yes I had the same set, I still have it, they were grey boxes and had Casper, little Audrey and a whole host of max Fleischer and silly symphony cartoons. You can find most of these cartoons in silly symphony or max Fleischer collections
Omg same! I didn't have cable so I just watched whatever movies I could find and this was my most favorite of all the cartoons. It just stuck with me for some reason😊
When I first watched this, I wondered about what happens after the kids feast. I've accepted that in my head cannon that not only are the three men related (perhaps brothers due to the similarities) but that the baker falls in love with the mother and therefore he marries her and they go to live with him, and when they get older, they work in their uncles toy store and market, as well as their new stepfathers bakery. So that their Dreamland never ends. The little boy doesn't even have to poke himself with a fork ever again.
I watched this when I was a kid. There were days that felt not to far from this for my brother and I. Thank God life got better, it just sucks that in order for it to get better I had to leave my family behind.
The other one I would love to see is the poignant cartoon about John Henry-the railroad pile driver. He wears himself out and dies at the end. Music was beautiful. Ten tissue cartoon.
I couldnt remeber where i saw it but i remeber this cartoon and actually understanding why the mom was crying because after my father pasted away we never had enough and my mom worked all the time so i knew exactly why she was crying.
I feel you Angelique, that is one of the most heartbreaking parts for me as well. As a parent now I understand how hard it is to provide for your kids and how it feels when you come short
There is depth and beauty in this simple little show. My Mother sacrificed her college career to help Bros n Srs when she could have been an amazing, well to do business woman. She promoted my bros n srs n I to achieve, and we sure have.
This was such a charming cartoon! I loved how kind the brother was towards his sister, and how he recanted on saying he was still hungry to spare his mother's feelings.
Maybe because I was an overtly sensitive child, but even at 7 years old (upon seeing this cartoon for the first time) I knew what had happened when the mother gave the last bit of food around, and there wasn't any more for seconds. The way the son and daughter saw that their mother couldn't and broke out in tears, the son stood up and said it was alright, that really gets to you. I saw the ending as such a happy one and one to aspire to. It is a great animated masterpiece on solidarity and the importance of it. Which is why I wonder today why United States being such a great wealthy nation that it is doesn't practice solidarity the way Nordic countries do. Instead of using the budget to kill people all that trillions could be use resourcefully by properly housing, clothing, feeding and educating each and every citizen within the nation. This cartoon had a direct impact on me as a kid growing up on the importance of looking after each other. It is why I do what I do at work helping as much as I could, even at the expense of getting myself into trouble at times, because I want to protect those around me and who I sincerely do care about. We are all connected to one another whether we want to admit it or not... we are all part of this world, so lets try to make it as less painful for each other. That is what I got from this cartoon. Even as a kid with disabilities this was clear as day. I don't know why normal people have a hard time knowing this until they are adults who keep practicing such a system that causes these hardships. Anyways this is such a throwback into my childhood. Thank you for uploading this.
"Blah blah blah Nordic". The United States spends tens of billions each year on food benefits for lower income people. 😂 The only reason children still are going hungry is imbecilic or uncaring parents.
Dang... This cartoon is too real for me... We went to the same thing sorta (not too severely). My mother didn't have money to take care of us and just seeing their mother cry was sad. Couldn't imagine the pain of not being able to feed your own children 😢
When my daughters were toddlers years ago, I would wait to eat my own lunch until after they were napping because I knew they would want my food, too, because they were still hungry. To this day I will still eat some small thing before going to sleep because going to sleep on an empty stomach used to cause terrible dreams.
I've seen this before probably 30 years ago now. It's one of those cartoons we've probably all seen at some point then forgot about it until stumbling upon it again. The scene of them eating the giant ice cream is what dug up the old memory.
I remember watching this as a kid in Honduras in the 80s. This is a daily reality as a child that I saw. It has left a lasting impression in me. Although I am blessed beyond measure it has made me very careful about money and making sure we always conserve but most importantly always SHARE our blessings. Like grandmother and grandfather said: “Donde come uno, comen dos.” Where one can eat, two can eat.
This episode always makes me smile even now because it gives me hope. Even though we live in an imperfect world where there is poverty, there are also good people who DO take action like those three good men did. Human kindness is just so... beautiful.
This is was favourite cartoon and my brother who actually passed away at 15 . We were so poor and we really identified in this cartoon. Re watching brought sweet memories of my beloved brother. I smiled all the way. Thanks for sharing it
This is a really nice little cartoon, which had some sad spots in it, but it has a happy ending, thanks to the kind-hearted business owners. This cartoon was something that a lot of depression-era audiences could relate to, since many people back then were living a hand-to-mouth existence, or knew someone who was. The kids' dream was lovely -- and then they woke up to find out that in a way, it had come true!
My dad, RIP, was 3 when this came out. He told me lots of stories about growing up in the Great Depression. I have always been grateful because of he and my mom’s lessons. I love you mom and dad. 🙏😇
My late Dad and our Mom (my half-sister, my half-brother who was full brother to my half-sister - their Dad died and Mom remarried Dad before they had my brother and then me) talked about the Great Depression and World War 2. My late Dad was in the Canadian Army and went over seas with his older brother Julius. Both came home to their Mom, 2 younger brothers and 2 sisters who were the youngest.
When I have children I will have them watch old cartoons in the morning before breakfast like my dad used to do, I’m 15 and I remember waking up sitting on the couch and watching old Mickey while my mom cooked breakfast.
When I was much younger, around the age of 6 or 7. I used to think this cartoon was made just for my twin brother and I. I don’t think like that anymore, but rewatching this 16 years later reminds me of the powerful, overall message: imagination goes a long way. So to anyone who took the time to read this: never give up, “I’ll see you somewhere in dreamland”...
This animation made me cry..Few kids don’t get a good childhood but a mother’s warmth and their dreams just keep ‘em happy. I always used to dream about my birthday celebration that never came true but I am glad to see the chef fulfilled their dreams. ❤️
Love, care, and concern for humanity is universal, my friend. I care about you. May God give you peace, health and prosperity. May you also have abundant joy. Bless you...may you have joy all the rest of your days!!

I love this cartoon. It helped me learn never to take things for granted because there were families who had it way worse of than me and my family. Im 21 now and ill always remember this amazing little toon.
My mother has a saying to every man she ever meets ”I will never love you as much as I love my children” The fact that the mother gave everything she could to her kids makes me think of my own ma and everything she did and still does for me and my siblings. I believe that with any single parent with kids, whether it be a father or mother, that people should help the best they can for the children's sake. Even if it's bringing food over and providing old clothes you no longer wear, it helps a lot
Thank you so much. This cartoon means so much to me....maybe that sounds silly, but it both breaks and mends my poor little heart with memories of childhood.
Believe it or not, I saw this cartoon in Taiwan when I was young girl in the mid 60’s. It made such an impression on me that I still remember it decades later. It’s lovely to see it again.
Her name was olive oil lmaoooo (don't attack me yet, I watched the cartoon as a kid but in a different language so I didn't know her English name, but in my language was called an olive as well but in a cuter way)

I remember that vhs! I think it has like 6 hours of cartoons on it. Ive been looking for it for years but i cant remember the name, it had this one, the worlds fair, little audrey and little lulu
People really need to be more grateful for what they got. I'm grateful that I at least have one good mom and she works really hard she's always providing.
it's mostly a heart breaker for me because i kinda went threw something like that, i wanna cry because it's so true but i read a silly comment on here so now i can't cry
My dad would buy me VHS tapes of cartoons that either he watched or wished he could because he grew up dirt poor (his favorite thing to tell me was that he was too poor to even window shop). This was one of my favorite cartoons. I love the dream sequence of them eating the treats that fell from the sky into their puffy flower cups. I also felt for the kids in this cartoon. My dad also did missionary work in Mexico and I would often see kids in very similar conditions. We’d pass out clothes, toothpaste and non-perishable food. Regrettably, I don’t do missionary work, but when I know of a family in need, I give. I hope I’m in a position to do more someday.

Growing up, my family struggled and we regularly accepted a "Christmas Basket" of groceries from our local church since it helped us to save money for other things we needed. We "got by" but money was always in short supply. Now I'm retired and, thanks to having had a government job, I have a reasonably good pension and don't have to struggle to pay bills. But I have not forgotten living in a house where only one room (the kitchen) was regularly heated, and that was by the fire in the wood-burning stove. When you have more than enough money, you have an obligation to share some of your excess with those in need. That's my opinion at least. (I practice what I preach, btw)

This cartoon made me so grateful for what I had as a kid. My mom would tell me stories about her growing up in Mexico in conditions just like these. Fucking tears my heart up knowing children out there have to go through this.
I know i grew up in Peru and saw kids like these while growing up
On RUclips a few years back, a young, educated Mexican woman explained Mexico's 60 mil population this way.

That breaks me too. As a parent it’s not only seeing your child suffer but you been unable to do something about it
manager-nim: Of course you know why.

Their dreamland just touches my heart and at the end the boy poked himself with the fork to see if he was just dreaming and he wasn't. So heartfelt.
But does this actually symbolise their dead after collapsing to a hallucinating state?
This is the sort of animation I would show to my future children if I ever married and started a family of my own. They'd be exposed to only the best of traditional/classic animation and children's programming, the stuff from the 1930s-1990s that I greatly enjoyed as a kid growing up in the '90s. Stories like this weren't merely cartoons in my opinion but a magical artform. They carried beautiful messages that encouraged and lifted young people up, not dumbed them down or tore them down.

@@vitoriarodrigues5700 Some of them were, many were not. I'm mixed part black, part white, and was rarely offended growing up looking at the majority of the old animation because for the most part, there was nothing to be offended by.

I first saw this cartoon when I was probably five or six, I had a big 6-hour tape collection of miscellaneous cartoons. It has always stuck with me as a favorite. I'm so glad to find it's been uploaded here, as every time I'm sad, watching it helps me out.
Rheah me too! Probably had the same, I bought mine at Walmart

I'm really emotional rn. This just makes me tear up.
That's how I wanted it to be
That's like how I hoped it ended, too.

Beautiful ending, which is why I think they left it as is, so the audience creates the happy ending for them. ^^

If those kids are still alive, as of December 9th 2021 they would be either 84 or 85 years old
I remember seeing this as a child and it had an everlasting impact on me. I'm happy I found it again.
Yes, exactly
By not understanding each other, we humans make life more difficult for ourselves and those around us
The Nordic countries are able to live like they do, because America spends its resources on defending them.
"Blah blah blah Nordic". The United States spends tens of billions each year on food benefits for lower income people. 😂 The only reason children still are going hungry is imbecilic or uncaring parents.
Their voices were too lovely to hear ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The fact that this was written in the Depression era and before WW2 emphasizes tough times people had to go through, especially the children.
Yeah the thing that sticks out to me is that this cartoon was made when cartoons where not this deep or sad I really respect this cartoon!! Kudos
There are some very advanced background techniques used in this cartoon. Parallax scrolling like in 1980s and 1990s video games.
I noticed that too :)
That's a Fleischer Studio's exclusive technique called Rotography.
I love this kind of animation ❤
Human kindness is just so... beautiful.
Why can't pple today make ads on human kindness instead of makeup and Alcohol.

This is a really nice little cartoon, which had some sad spots in it, but it has a happy ending, thanks to the kind-hearted business owners. This cartoon was something that a lot of depression-era audiences could relate to, since many people back then were living a hand-to-mouth existence, or knew someone who was. My mother has a saying to every man she ever meets ”I will never love you as much as I love my children”
The fact that the mother gave everything she could to her kids makes me think of my own ma and everything she did and still does for me and my siblings. I believe that with any single parent with kids, whether it be a father or mother, that people should help the best they can for the children's sake. Even if it's bringing food over and providing old clothes you no longer wear, it helps a lot

This cartoon makes me cry so hard.

I learned about The Great Depression because of this cartoon.
These cartoons are jewels that reflect an era, a moment in the history of U.S.A.
Thanks a lot.
i watched this so many times as a kid but now i'm 7 months pregnant and so emotional. this made me bawl.
