As a nurse and esthetician I am SO glad you addressed the issue of putting makeup in the waterline! It does look beautiful, and when you're tired a white or nude shade eyeliner on the bottom waterline does make your eyes look more awake or bright, but there are other ways to achieve awake bright eyes. Great point, and I love your technique. I'm going to try it when I put my makeup on!

Thank you Stephanie! Your waterline public service announcement is much needed and, even though some folks don't want to hear it - we do need to be mindful of the cosmetics we put IN our eye. Your research is much appreciated.

Miranda Classics And the worst thing we with dry eye can use is Visine type products, which get rid of redness. There are disastrous effects to using these drops every day. So, I go to work with red eyes, and I don't like it.

Unfortunately I love the way tight lining looks but I had a terrible experience with it. I developed an infection on my upper eyelid. It is so swollen I had to go to a ophthalmologist to be treated and am on antibiotics.

I've done it once, my eyes looked gorgeous. But, I take lots of meds *and* I also use artificial tears because my eyes are chronically watery. So I got scared and went back to a thin black line very close to the lashes. It's better for my peace of mind and I don't wear makeup often. I'm sick enough, I don't need anymore health problems.

Every small hooded eye tutorial says to tight line but I couldn’t even think about it if I wanted to. I already get stye in my left eye once a year that last a month (and make me look like a hideous quasimodo!) so I am naturally prone to clogged oil glands. Also have had dry eye syndrome all my life (can’t wear contacts anymore now that I turned 50) and you’re right it doesn’t get better as you get older. But thank you for the brush-to-pencil technique that I have now adopted! So simple but I never thought of that! I’m so careful about cleaning my brushes and not using old makeup but my eye dr tells me it’s not bacteria it’s the oil glands like you said. I’ve learned so many little tips from you already. It’s also nice to see someone real who wears every day makeup, no fake lashes etc. I don’t want to scare anyone, especially now that we’re not going anywhere anymore. Wish I found you sooner. Thanks Risa 💕

Thank you! This is a PSA that all makeup lovers need to hear. I was not aware of the actual medical issues that can be caused by lining the water line. I very rarely line my upper water line, and never the bottom one. Dark shades in the lower water line totally make eyes look smaller and I don't need that! I see some lovely ladies who do this and it makes their eyes look like squinty black slits--probably not the look they were going for. Oh well, to each their own. Thanks again for this great info!

Really appreciate this video, Stephanie! I’m 25, and have sensitive eyes. I always found waterlining to transfer to my inner eye corner in black gunk, so I stopped doing it. I actually don’t wear makeup very often because I never could make it work on myself, but I am slowly learning tips to make it look better. I also think the softer look is prettier and more elegant. Definitely easier to do. Thanks again!!

Thank you Stephanie for a very wise dialog regarding eye health and lining the waterline. I am over 50 and am really bothered with chronic dry eyes. I appreciate your observation that no one talks about it. You're right. No one does. When I was younger I did line my eyes and I have wondered if that has contributed to my eye issues today. Thanks again!!

I have always used my own technique to tightline just above the waterline on my upper lid. I’m actually applying the thinnest line between my lashes. You provided a service by addressing this issue. Right now, I’m having trouble finding the right liner. I used to use one from a are Minerals that was extremely precise but didn’t tug. They discontinued the liner. I’m watching your technique with a brush today to see what my alternatives are.

Thank you so much for making this video. I have hooded and downturned eyes and I struggle with applying eyeliner and shadow. I find that they really can make my eyes appear smaller and more droopy if I'm not careful. Please keep the wonderful advice coming. I really appreciate your honesty and fabulous easy everyday and non-youtuber tutorials. I need to go out in public after I apply my makeup and I appreciate "real" makeup tutorials for the over 35 viewer. Have a great week!

Thank you so much for doing this series! I'm tired of everyone thinking that they have to use the same technique. There are so many options when it comes to liner, and I don't know why more people aren't talking about liner that is actually flattering to your eye shape, coloring, makeup style, etc. I tightline almost daily, and have for years. My husband actually pointed out to me when we were dating that it looked more natural/flattering that way. :)

Yes! Thank you so much for posting this info. These glands are called Meibomian glands, and they release oil onto the eye to help tears evaporate more slowly, among other things. They can get clogged, inflamed, and yes, with age, they may dry up. Even my dog had an inflamed Meibomian gland that needed surgery to remove. If you like the waterline lining look - just do it for special occasions, not every day.

Fabulous video. I have felt for a long time that pencil lining is harsher than shadows. Especially on fair skinned blue eyed people. However you have to be able to create some definition. That's why your demo was perfect. I have naturally hooded eyes slightly downturned and always feel that lining dark colors on the bottom waterline closes them in. I appreciate that you have brought this issue up. It isn't addressed enough. Eye lining in general is not so simple. It has to be adjusted to the individual and too many people don't seem to realize it. Thanks for bringing it up.

Great video, it was so helpful to learn that lining can led to serious eye problems. I know I often have to use a q-tip with makeup remover to fix &/or remove the liner from tightline & waterline. I can't imagine what is going to happen to the eyes of the girls in their teens & tweens who start applying makeup to their waterline, tightline & are using false eyelashes on a regular basis. Finding the right mirror angle will definitely help.

Every one of those too dark, matte inky shades some of us can't wear as shadows bec they're just too much trouble to properly blend out, especially if our skin is porcelain, is perfect for tightlining . I have found that the wax in certain eyeliners cause my lashes to either break or block the hair opening, causing gaps, so I need workable alternatives to line my eyes. Waterproof is only for special situations like high humidity or weddings.

I can never ever get pencil liner to stay in my bottom waterline so I rarely ever do that technique. And now I know why it doesn't stay put! I guess it's a good thing that my eyes reject the liner! I have watched a ton of makeup videos and see girls doing that and I am cringing and talking to the screen saying "oh no, you had better be careful". I have very few oil so glads left on my lower lids and I get them scrapped every 3 months to remove dead cells. Thank you so much for mentioning the Meibomian Glands! I have recently been diagnosed with MGD (Meibomian Gland Dysfunction). I have never lined on the water line, just happened as a result of age as you mentioned. I have spent over a thousand dollars to flush out the glands and I am still having issues and about to spend another thousand dollars on another procedure. It is no fun so thank you so much for warning others of the dangers of blocking these glands. I was on one of your other videos and you mentioned this one so here I am :-)

Wow, no wonder I have so many issues with my eyes! I have used liner in my waterline since high school so that's over 20 years! I actually have issues with my eyes being TOO watery so I wreck my smokey eye and liner daily. I think now my eyes are over compensating. I will definitely be taking your suggestions, thank you!! Ok, I mentioned this in my last comment BUT I can't emphasize how much I'm loving my Revlon Pro Collection Salon one step Hair dryer and volumizer. It has ionic technology and it has a nice oval big brush with bristles that actually grip your hair!! What a concept! And finally it blows enough air, as much as a blow dryer that your hair is actually drying. It is 1100 watts as opposed to most of those roundbrush dryers that have 500 watts and take FOREVER to dry your hair! This is amazing, I have very wavy curly hair and this polishes it even better than when I dry with my blow dryer and round brush, because after that I still have to use my straight iron to sleek it out and defrizz it. This is so fast and easy, I get better volume and quite honestly $56 on Amazon Prime is not bad at all considering this is the first round brush dryer that I've found that actually works! I think you would love this Stephanie, I've watched your hair videos, this would be so ideal for you. My hair feels so healthy, I'm just still in shock how well it straightens my kinks, especially the ones so close to my scalp. Has anybody else tried this? Don't mistake it for the $26 one, I bought that one first on accident, not even close. It doesn't grip your hair. Anyway, I HAD to tell you again because for $56, and you can return it if it's not for you, it's worth a try! Anyway, I'll be rewatching this video tomorrow morning while doing my makeup, lol, GREAT tips! Thank you!

The information that you provided about the waterline, the oil glands and their importance for eye health especially dry eyes is a much needed message for all of us who watch the makeup tutorials. I have dry eyes so I know how uncomfortable this condition is. I am limited with the amount of makeup that I use on my eyes. Thank you for addressing the dry eye issue and how waterlining may make matters worse. I have been battling dry eye for about 10 years and have lost my bottom lashes on the outer thirds of both eyes, most likely due to a dry eye underlying cause of Myobium Gland Dysfunction (MGD). I have only just started wearing eye makeup and will be sticking to tightlining. Thanks for the tip on wetting the brush first. I will give that a try.

I do the exact same thing very often with respect to tightlining with a powder eyeshadow or a pencil. You do some nice work and it's refreshing to see somebody on YT do everyday looks for professional women. Professional women can't go to work every day looking like a circus clown with 52 different bright colors and false eyelashes! I also agree with you about the waterline. I do it sometimes and when I do, I also usually use a lighter color.

Great video and an important message about eye health. Your technique is so much more natural than many eye looks I've seen on RUclips. I like to use pencil liner (NARS, Chanel, or Ulta) under the upper lash line and shadow with an angled flat brush over the lash line. If I'm using a palette, I just use the darkest shade and sometimes smudge it a bit.

I go in and out with tight lining the lashes and when I do it, I use a flat across brush like you do. I have two of them that I bought from Elf cosmetics back when they were really cheap. Don't know why but never thought about tightlining with brush/shadow always just done pencil..think this will definitely make it much quicker in the mornings using brush...once I get the right angle for me. Difference using lighter pencil too for water lining.

Thank you for this information! I occasionally line my waterline but right after I do, I spray the liner with 70% alcohol then air dry it before I re-cover it to keep it clean.

I agree always use shadow 1. I stink with the pencil & liquid liners 2. I seem to have a steadier hand with the shadow works great thanks Stephanie Marie!!

Very helpful video! I can attest to the dry eye issue with aging. They've always been watery until a few years ago. I'm 42 & was recently given RX eye drops for chronic dryness & will be getting plugs in my tear ducts. (Weird) I never understood how others could pull off eyeliner on the lower lid. It made my eyes water like crazy, pigment never stayed put, & looked too heavy with my old method, so I just stopped. Thanks for teaching me the stippling technique!

This was an excellent and helpful video. I have only been watching makeup videos for a few months and was so surprised to see so many people lining the waterline, it just didn't seem right to me. Thanks for the helpful information and research on this issue. I also enjoy using shadow as liner, I am a bit of a klutz and cannot get the hang of using pencils or gels.

Excellent video Stephanie! I wear lots of mascara and sometimes I end up coating my water line too too much... causing my eyes to water for hours! I will definitely be more careful now. Thank you ❤️

I use the MJ fine liner for tight lighting on the upper lashes, and I do use a nude on the lower waterline. My eyes are so small, especially when I smile, that using a dark color makes them look non existent! Thank you for mentioning about eye health, I never really thought about it before. I might have to re-evaluate putting my nude in everyday. 👍🏻😊

Shout out from over here in Picayune/Slidell! Love this vid, I learned the hard way in the 80's when I used to melt kohl with a lighter and line my waterline with it. Stayed on all night but I wreaked havoc on my eyes. Should be an occasional thing only.

Thank you for spreading the message. I am rarely able to do my tightline or waterline anymore due to chronic dry eyes. What caused this?, not able to get a definitive answer from my doc but here it is to stay. Once in awhile for a treat I will go all out, and suffer later but for sure eye health is more important. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for this very informative video!!! Had to subscribe!!! I have chronic dry eyes and appreciate the PSA about eye health. I also have downturned hooded eyes and love the tight lining look. I just feel I do not get it right - either is goes to the water line or above the lashes - taking aware from the eye space. Maybe my angle is incorrect!

Hi Stephanie, enjoy your videos very much, my struggle is getting a pencil that will not transfer to the bottom waterline it always end up very dark when I do it and I have tried all kinds of pencils they are expensive, please can you let us know which one is better for not transferring to the water line! thank you for the demonstration on how to apply it!💄💄💄💄💄

    • @StephanieMarie

+Francisca Polanco Try the MJ Fineliner. The first time I filmed the demo (I deleted it because the lighting was bad), I used that for my waterline. I needed to film more videos and tried to wipe it off dry and wet but it wouldn't budge until I used makeup remover later. Or try using a lighter hand or the shadow instead. :)

    • @sofiamantas6939
      @sofiamantas6939 7 лет назад

Francisca Polanco try using a gel eyeliner with a brush and just press it on your top waterline. Then use an eyeshadow of the same color to "set" it by utilizing the same method (pressing it into the waterline with a brush). I have the same problem. I only like to line my top waterline and not my bottom. By the end of the day my bottom waterline always seemed to have a black eyeliner transfer from the top waterline and it drove me crazy. Hope this helps!

Thank you for talking about MGD ... I have been suffering with this along with dry eyes for years . I suffer from intermittent blurred vision and occasional foreign bodied feeling . It's a horrible condition and I would caution your followers to not tightline !! These glands need to work properly and you are definitely putting them in jeopardy. You just preformed a public service for all your ladies . Thank you
