  • The vegetable garden is changing... and changing in a big way. I'm creating a guild garden, a polyculture / forest garden made of 16 raised bed fruit tree guilds! Today I'm laying the planting foundations and showing the first 3 companion planting groups to consider for your own fruit tree guild.

      Hi Niall- have you ever tried a step-over fruit tree? I was watching the latest episode of Gardener's World with Monty at Longmeadow and he's trained his apple trees to be maybe three feet high. also on a miniature tree graft.

    I like the way the garden is already taking on the feeling of age. Also, another use for the Rhubarb is the leaves have oxalic acid, so most critters leave them alone (you probably know this) and their flowers are beautiful and attract every pollinator.

    love this experiment! can’t wait to see how it all goes. i think dwarf rootstock fruit trees are a total game changer, no ladder needed for picking? yes please! 😍
    my chives are gorgeous but they always seem to flop - have yours ever just decided to go horizontal? i’m planning to divide them and give them a little extra drainage this year, hopefully it will help them stand up straight 😂

    Niall, I've just recently found your channel, and I'm enjoying it tremendously.
    I'll be ready for fruit trees next spring at the new house. I'm buying bareroot and going to espalier them on the fence of my courtyard. Comfrey will now be my ground cover.
    I've not used Comfrey in the past. Thank you for your recommendation.

    Such a wonderful idea. BTW near the rhubarb forcer and other beds, there's are small green plastic bands on the fruit trees that should be removed so the trunk doesn't become girdled.

      Did you decide on what trees to plant? We used to live in San Antonio and I found it very difficult to find fruit trees that would still flower without a long winter. We moved to California to a cooler zone (8a) so I was able to find apples and citrus that will work well here. Best of luck with your trees!

      @@KitchenGardenTours not yet for a peach... going to look for one that needs less chill hours. So far I have a meyer lemon, key lime, a Satsuma, Pink Guava & Pineapple Guava - they're young 2years old but all supposed to be well suited to our warmer climate but the jury is still out on the fruit!

    This is something I would really like to try. But, as the trees mature, is there concern about them shading out the other plants growing underneath?

  • @juliemclaughlin68
    @juliemclaughlin68 4 месяца назад +1

    Hi Niall. This is so exciting! I literally shopped in the garden centre yesterday for the plants and apple tree I needed. On your recommendation I got the James Greeve dwarf apple tree, could I ask though, do I need another type of apple tree to cross pollinate? I have two raised beds just built a few days ago. I’m feeling i will do the same as you and do both raised beds as guilds. Gives a whole new concept to the garden. A very rainy day in N Ireland today so will have to wait. Take care and thanks for another great video. 😊

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  4 месяца назад

      Hi Julie! Aw that's so cool - I hope that you have success with it. So... James Grieve is pollination group 3 so to guarantee plenty of pollinated fruit, you ideally need another apple. If you're not in a huge hurry, you can leave it for a year or two and see how you get on... but otherwise, a second apple would help. Hope this helps!

    • @juliemclaughlin68
      @juliemclaughlin68 4 месяца назад

      Thanks Niall, I would be keen to get another one so it would have to be another type rather than another James Greeve?

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  4 месяца назад +1

      @@juliemclaughlin68 I went with Discovery which is a well-known red eating apple. It's also pollination group 3 so it'll work well with James Grieve. I have 2x James Grieve and 2x Discovery in the centre of the guild garden. The great thing about Discovery is that it's common so it's easy to find in garden centres and online, and you can easily get it on a dwarfing rootstock. Hope this helps! BTW, what part of NI are you in? No problem if you'd rather not answer, I'm just interested because I'm from there myself!
