  • How to make your own no-dig peat-free raised garden bed. Super simple and a great way to grow your own food or flowers. In today's video I show you my 4 easy steps to grow from bare ground, to a raised bed that will be productive.
    This episode is supported by New Leaf Compost. They create high quality peat-free composts and compost mixes that are stocked in many garden centres BUT they'll also deliver both small and bulk bags! I use their composts and have been really pleased with their performance. Make sure to check them out:

    I've never done raised beds but the way you've build those they look like they would last forever and the formal classic layout of them really makes a difference. Also, the structure of the greenhouse in the background really looks good against the garden and the buildings in the background.

      Thanks Jeffrey! Yeah certainly my original beds that are now 3 years old are going strong! Wait until I do a full greenhouse tour - you're going to love it!

    Looks great. I am gradually heading that way. I have discovered pallet collars which are so useful as you don’t have to make them. I was fortunate enough to get three given to me and hopefully will get more but companies that used to give them away are now getting cute to the fact that us gardeners like them and they are charging for them, but if they can find a free source great.

    • @niallgardens

      Wonderful! Pallet collars are super, but I can well imagine what you say that companies are starting to realise that they're in demand! Love the idea of using them as raised beds!

    Fine job Niall, you really have come into your own ,making your own mark ,and customising your garden to your own needs. I built near all my own beds, all reclaiming building boards, some line with plastic to to keep moisture from thrm, but i do think the ekemenrs will get thrm anyway, so i didnt, its all just part of the process. Can i commend you, on really doing a great job with the garden, i kniw time is limited for you. What time you have you are making great use of it. Well done,and thank you, its been a pleasure to watch you develop the area laaps and bounds. Happy Sunday Niall.

      @niallgardens ah sure we are all mad about you,and your adventures in the garden. BTW I was told at a bug show, that we should have nettles in our gardens, to encourage ladybirds. So u think you were ahead of the game,I love my nettles in my allotment, and now don't feel guilty for not removing them all. All good here,weather is crazy, brassicas,and lettuce are living it, it was my year for cauliflowers,best things i grew, along with turnips and lettuce. Weather still unsettled, but we will battle on. Thanks Niall for the reply.

    This is ace to see , but incredibly expensive as you said. We found some small raised beds you can put together yourself from our local garden centre which have worked well in our small space . We could do with more though 😅never seems enough ...

  • @mikekelly1566

    Hi Niall , that looks great. If you put a layer of dpc around the timber on the inside of the bed it could save the timber from rotting for years. Saw this at GIY in Waterford and thought it was a great idea.

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  Год назад +1

      Thanks Mike! To be honest the reason I haven't is that water will still accumulate between that and the wood and the bottoms of the planks are again the ground also, so I'm willing to accept that they'll slowly degrade over time. Saying that, after 3 years mine are still going strong and not showing any signs of breaking up!

    Hi Niall great video I am hoping to do a couple of raised beds next year, do they deliver the mulch that you use to the west of Ireland and could I ask how much the big bag you used is? I will probably need a couple of them

    Can we do raise beds on tiles.What should be done for water drainage.Could you please explain it if someone lives in buidling and dont want to use pots and prefers raise bed?

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  Год назад

      Technically you could, but the tiles will ultimately limit the depth of bed possible. As you say, drainage will be an issue also. You can purchase raised bed kits that are actually lifted up on legs, some made of plastic, some made of wood and I think these are most likely to solve your issue. As an aside, if your plan is to put anything on a balcony, particuarly when it comes to soil, make sure that you don't put too much weight on the balcony as it may only be rated for a certain total mass.

    I like your raised beds, but by touching the wood to the ground, it is going to rot out and get termites. Water is the enemy of wood. What I do is to place pavers at the corners of the raised bed, making sure to do a correct paver install so they cannot move around. Then place the raised bed corners onto those elevated pavers, and secure the inside of the box to the ground with something like a t-post. Line the inside corners only with a woven landscape fabric, and I am sure you can find one without plastics. That keeps the soil/compost from leaking out under the raised bed. Just make sure you use something for the side liner that will NOT hold water. The whole point of this is to create fast draining materials against the wood.
    What are the percentages of topsoil and compost in the New Leaf mix? I guess that topsoil is a sandy loam soil?

    I know i shouldn't say this but peat is great for the garden i miss it. I know digging it up isn't good for the environment. Actually someone said to me recently that they didn't realise peat was bad for the garden 😮 yes thats the way they took it. up. Im finding substitutes for it but its not cheap

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  Год назад

      I think it's ok to still miss how well peat worked for us. If it didn't have a negative environmental impact, it'd be perfect. I think over the next few years, it's going to be a continual learning curve for all of us as we learn how to use peat free alternatives really well
