  • On today’s episode of car chats with Sarah, we have three topics we are discussing:
Has the value of college education declined?
Is college still valuable in 2024?
The thief of joy = Comparison
College used to be the end-all be-all. You know, we were told at a young age, oh, you need to go to college and get a four-year degree. The boomers always told us: Then, you will be able to get a good job.
    Side Note:
Ok, tell me why, then, that jobs want a bachelor’s and 10 years of experience.
College grads, when they graduate, are at a disadvantage because oftentimes we will take any job just to make ends meet.
Like me, I took a job at a bank, knowing it was probably temporary. I was driving 50 miles a day, going back and forth.
In the industry I’m in, a lot of the positions don’t require a bachelor’s degree, which is ironic.
Like, the job I applied to almost 3 years ago, didn’t require a bachelor’s degree. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not sure I would have been offered the job had I not obtained my bachelor's.
I have the job I have now I took it because I’m like all right. Well, it’s not the most ideal situation, but let me at least get some experience here, and then experience turned into almost 2 years and counting.
When I graduated from college in 2021, I felt like my bachelor's degree was the equivalent of a high school diploma. From 2017 to 2021, the measure of success for people my age went from: you need a bachelor's degree to be successful to you need a master's degree to be successful. Whoever they are, keep moving the freaking goalpost.
At the end of the day, though, what I am seeing recently is more people are prioritizing other alternative routes besides college. Which I think is super important. Trades and certificates are can result in higher paying jobs, and are probably more cost-effective in today’s day and age than ever before.
The crazy thing that I also see all over TikTok is people who went and got a college education and something like a STEM major or whatever, and then they end up working at a coffee shop because that’s what brings them happiness.
When I mentioned to my parents that I wanted to potentially explore going to law school, they came back and said:
“Well, people who went to law school had parents who went.”
That’s such a logical fallacy. Like, wth? Another boomer response.
On top of that, neither one of my parents ever went to college, and when going to college, I was also a first-generation college student.
Is college is still valuable in 2024?*
In some circumstances, I do think so. From my high school students today is that you should consider alternative means like a trade, if college is really not for you.
*That’s why they say things like use your 9 to 5 to build You’re 5 to 9.*
Off the top of my head, i can think of at leat two people who i graduated high school with that had their associates through dual enrollment and then started their own business.
I mean, I sometimes think that I would’ve loved to have been a welder. Or even sometimes I think about real estate.
Sometimes magic is just spending more time on something than anyone else might reasonably expect.
*Comparison in life and in the workplace in your 20s.*
Comparing yourself to others is natural, but focusing on personal growth is more important than external benchmarks. It goes back to what I said a few weeks ago in another chat about being able to please some of people some of the time but not all the people all the time.
I’ll give you an example: someone asks you to do something. you do it, and they tell you ten different ways that you should have done it.
The immediate response in your head is: ok, you do it next time.
But, on the outside, you’re cool, calm, and collected.
I feel like everyone goes through a phase maybe in their 20s maybe in their 30s or maybe in their 40s even or even 50s who knows I think at one point in everyone’s life we all go through a phase where we struggled to feel like we are good enough.
It’s actually quite common to feel this way, Everyone has periods of self-doubt and growth of comes from overcoming these challenges.
So much of what we go through in life, we just have to ignore other people and in their opinions because in the end, their opinions don’t really matter.
Remember, your worth is not determined by others' opinions.

Is Final Cut Pro on the ipad any good? I was considering getting lumafusion instead. Also which iPad Pro do you have? m1? M2? 11 inch? 12.9 inch?

It’s pretty good. My only gripe is that it’s a monthly cost. I mostly use it to rough cut my videos that I export them to Final Cut on the computer. I think I have the M1.
