    • @blahorgaslisk7763
      @blahorgaslisk7763 3 года назад +4

      Might be hard to get them to stay with the bolt during flight but still break away on entering the target. Unless... Idea... Make the nock a breakaway part and have the the fins attach to it. The string would accelerate the bolt by pushing the nock and that way it will stay with the bolt. The fit between the bolt and the nock can be loose enough that it easily is stripped from the bolt when entering the target.
      OK so it can probably be done, but the question is how much of a difference would it make.

    The vanes aren't as big of a factor as you made them out to be. The target material resists compression and takes energy to compress robbing it from the projectile. The boradhead cuts material in a wider path than the shaft. The material around the shaft has to be displaced regardless, but the broadhead allows the material to be compressed to a lesser degree locally- it spreads the compression throughout the now "freed" material.

    I´ve made not so good experience using these archery mats. I´ve combined five layers to stop bolts from a very strong crossbow (tenpoint nitro xrt), but from 50m distance the bolt penetrates the mats to the nock, which means you have to dissassembla the target after shooting. I´ve changed the target to a bag full of rags (22kg) and this target stops the bolt even from very close distance. The first advantage is, that you are able to withdraw the bolt with two fingers. The second, that the price is something around 40€ instead of 180€.

    It seems to me that the bodkin tips would be a prefarable "all round" type of bolt. If you're firing at a moving target, it's hard to guarantee that a broadhead will hit soft tissue.
    But with the bodkin, if you hit a ribcage, it's tip is likely to cause the bodkin to slide in between the ribs, even if it first hits a rib directly by glancing.
    Or if you hit skull bone, the bodkin is powerful enough to break through.

    • @Gk2003m
      @Gk2003m 3 года назад

      Nope. The bodkin, while cool, generally does not penetrate as well as a field point. I’ve tested it, both on archery targets and on pork shoulder.
      What the bodkin penetrates effectively is chain mail. The person breaking into your home? The odds on him wearing chain mail ever, let alone while invading your home, are effectively zero.

    Something to consider: perhaps you don’t want the whole arrow to penetrate that deeply. Perhaps it’s better to not glue the tip retainer/insert in, but have it pop out when the vanes hit flesh. The broadhead will continue to travel into the target.... this is how I’m doing it. Using expandable broadheads of course. The ones that best fit the Adder are the TruGlo Titanium X.

    • @benedict6962
      @benedict6962 3 года назад

      A good portion of the momentum is in the body of the arrow. Even if you don't glue the tip on, I don't think the tip will travel much further in without the rest of the body pushing. Unless the tip has an explosive or something, of course.

    • @Gk2003m
      @Gk2003m 3 года назад +1

      While you are correct about that, I’ve tested this two ways and found the following: a) the head goes into a slab of raw beef about 1 inch further than the stuck shaft. And b) if you have a nail in the shaft, it carries the momentum you seek. What that does is push the broadhead even further into the meat, and turns it to the side.
      But here’s the thing: if you want venison, virtually any full-size single shot xbow is a better choice. They will generate more momentum, and be far more accurate at longer range. The Adder is NOT a hunting weapon; it is a tactical weapon! The objectives are significantly different. In hunting, maximum penetration = quicker bleed-out = more humane kill that is easier to track and recover. In tactical deployment? Your objective is not bloodletting. Your objective is to disrupt the processes of your assailant as quickly and effectively as possible. So a pass-thru is not as desirable as having as many pieces of dangerous stuff lodged in the assailant as possible, inflicting as much discomfort as possible.
      While I dig Jeorg’s experiments and learn from them, I think the 130 pound Adder with my arrow configuration is the most effective from a tactical standpoint.

    • @benedict6962
      @benedict6962 3 года назад +1

      @@Gk2003m So even if it doesn't travel a large distance, the logistics of pulling it out without it connected to the shaft makes it more effective at keeping someone down? I think I get it

    • @Gk2003m
      @Gk2003m 3 года назад

      Right. You can’t pull it out, and can’t push it through. Not only that, but if the insert is not glued into the shaft that shaft is more likely to fragment on its way in - thereby producing even more shrapnel inside the assailant. And if you set it up so that some irritant, such as capsaicin, is released from inside the bolt when the head separates from the shaft, it becomes even more effective at distracting your assailant from his chosen task. And then the multi-shot capability of the Adder.... you could really mess up the plans of someone who has chosen to invade your home. And remember that you ARE getting significant penetration.

      @@sirjayyessir3088 search through older vidoes. He was testing an updated 150 lb limb. I think he said if he goes higher as on the CIA adder he has to make the cocking mechanism bar 6mm thick. If you check your ADDA it's just a pressed steel bar about 1.2 mm thick.

    im sure if that if the compound was set to his true drawlength it would have penetrated much more.
    would have also been nice to see them shot at a practicle distance (25-40yrd)

    How much kinetic energy is in the Broadhead darts. What is their affective range on axis deer? Also is the crossbow accurate enough for hunting, and what is the effective range? What is the kinetic energy at 40 yards or 37.576 m, also the weight of the darts? Well you pretty much answered my questions it’s really cool to have a pump crossbow, we don’t have anything like it here in the US.

    The best archery target for what you are doing is stacked cardboard strapped together with ratchet straps. You shoot into the skinny edge of the cardboard sheets. You can unstack and see exactly what happened. Remember to shuffle the cardboard when you restack.

    Hey Joerg, is a flashlight legal to mount on crossbows in Germany? I think you can make one approximate a laser by putting a reflective cover that have a small hollow tube on it. Just a thought.

    If the vanes reduce penetration, could break away vanes be created? Perhaps if done correctly they could be secondary penetrators?

    EK archery need to get on the stick and make a 180lb throwing arm. And to go along with that, some heavier bolts.. There are what, 2 lesser strength arms already (110 and 90lb), why not a more powerful one? Jorge himself said the cocking lever doesn't need reinforcement up to 180ls. And yes, I've seen the video for the do it yourself option. But what about those of us without a workshop/the tools to make all these mods??

    there should be a broadhead that detaches from the flights upon impact and continues to travel through the tissue for deepest penetration. Then you should be able to hunt even the largest animals with relatively lower energy.
    It's a matter of knowing the animals anatomy to know exactly where to place that shot and being within range.
    I've seen a guy on youtube using a blowgun to take down a large black bear..at 20 yards. His darts are basically a small sharp broadhead and their velocity is about 175 FPS from his blowgun. But he is very accurate.
