Old Man's Garage Malibu in the HOUSE! Chevy 10 bolt rear gears, and posi upgrade! Start to finish!

  • Who does't love a clean classic Chevy Malibu, and even more when it's a low mile one with a healthy small black chevy under the hood... Oh and owned by Bill Hoskinson of Old Man's Garage. Yes indeed, the formerly Street Racing Channel Malibu has dropped by for us to do one of the things we do best and that's rear end upgrades, gear change, and in this case the addition of a posi to the chevy 10 bolt rear end.
    We are and have always been honored that Bill and Billy both are willing to trust us with their vehicles, for people who do the vast majority of their own work it really means a lot to us that they would call upon us when they need. You've seen us do the suspension work on the SRC S10, the Falcon, even the Mustang and Corvette so we feel confident in saying they trust us with the best of the best of their toys. Today is no different as Bill has brought us the Chevy Malibu classic.
    You'll notice right away how clean this thing is and just how much we love it. When was the last time YOU saw a GM G body this clean and low miles? And also now that Bill owns it, he plans to actually drive this thing! Only, there's one big problem. The gears are terrible in it since it's been upgraded to a 4 speed 700R4 transmission, and, it doesn't melt both tires when told to. Let's be honest here, that's a problem.
    So we went long form on this video, showing pretty much the entire process start to finish of chevy 10 bolt posi upgrading and gear changing. It's not exactly a how to video but it's about as close as we'll ever make. Of course there were a few complications we ran into along the way as well, these things NEVER go entirely as planned but fortunately we got it in and out reasonably quickly and if you've seen the videos since on the Old Man's channel... you know he wanted to test that new two tire fire as quickly as possible.
    For everyone who has come over to our channel and discovered us through the videos with have done with Bill and his family, we very much appreciate you being here and your continued support. Lucore Automotive is a small family owned shop that shares a lot of similar drive and passions and we are honored when they tag us in to help out. We wouldn't be where we are now if it it weren't for our customer and supporters. So huge huge thank you to each and every one of you!

    Good work, and nice catch on the lock washers. I wouldn't have replaced the 26K mile original axle bearings though, unless they were showing signs of wear. They were probably better quality than anything being produced today.

    Not knocking your upgrade it's better than a one leger and with regular street radials and no sticky tires the 7.5 with a new posi and gears is definitely a good upgrade but with sticky tires and hard burnouts in a burnout box with it most likely will not last to long l had a 1984 Monte Carlo SS l bought new and it had a healthy LS2 engine built 700r4 transmission just sold it 3 months ago for the cost of the posi and gear for the 7.5 you could probably get a 1985-87 Buick GN 8.5 it's much sturdier than the 7.5 that's what l did with my Monte Carlo the other route is to put a 8.8 out of a 1985-93 Mustang GT anyways very nice Malibu love G-bodies

    • @LucoreAuto
      @LucoreAuto  2 года назад

      You have a valid point, this poor little 10 bolt is certainly in for an exciting and possibly dangerous life. If you was Bill's video last week when he picked it up he pretty immediately "tested" it.
      As far as we know he's got no plans to put it on slicks or anything race tire. At least that's the plan as of now. If he DOES end up wanting to get rowdy with it... honestly it would probably go the Ford 8.8 route exactly like what we did in the Falcon for them.

    • @gloriamaletta8667
      @gloriamaletta8667 2 года назад +1

      @@LucoreAuto 8.8 Ford is plentiful cost effective and can be built to handle big power l think of the 8.8 Ford as a better GM 12 bolt and l believe the width of the 1985-93 is close to the same size as the G-body close enough that if you had the right backspacing on the wheels it would work perfectly in a G-body l can honestly say the 7.5 l had on my Monte Carlo SS never broke before it was changed to a 1986 Buick GN 8.5 but it was whining really bad

    • @LucoreAuto
      @LucoreAuto  2 года назад

      @@gloriamaletta8667 it would be a perfect upgrade for this little G Body if he ever needs it. And they make very simple swaps. Doubt he'll be needing it but all it'll take if he does is a click and a phone call 😉

    • @bdd1469
      @bdd1469 2 года назад

      Before 8.8 swaps were popular I broke at least a dozen 7.5 ten bolts with a healthy 406. I had Camaro's and Trans Am's so axle swaps were a little harder and more expensive. I built a " good " 7.5 with a detroit locker, solid pinion spacer, and good axles, and never broke it again. After that I moved on to breaking 3rd gear in at least a dozen T5's. I loved dumping the clutch in 3rd gear and doing half mile long burnouts... I cringe to think that that 7.5 is still in a car my friend owns to this day.

    Come on now Rich, I’m at the very back end of 63, and you and I know why they were called Jesus clips. As they flew across the shop when you took them off and couldn’t find them. Especially when the dealership said we had to put them back on. LOL 😂

      We were just laughing about this yesterday evening, doing gears on a Jeep crack the diff and you could smell that thing OUTSIDE! It's certainly a special kind of stink.
      We do quite a lot of this kind of work, not much of it makes it onto the channel though. As long as the customer is paying, we'll do more or less whatever they want.

    I'd be making me a little phone call to the manufacturer and ask them, What's the correct bolts and if they tell you the big head then you'll

      Won’t do any good to express your thoughts to the manufacturer tho. They believe they know better than you as a mechanic so it’s just a waste of your thoughts there. They figure that’s what they have engineers for and why they pay them the big bucks…………. Supposedly, lol

      Most of us technicians don't wear them unless grinding, or using cut off wheel. We trade a little safety for comfort and not having to deal with glasses fogging
