He sounded damn good back then. Chino can't hit notes like that anymore, unfortunately, but I do like the way his singing evolved, though. Very original voice.

Steph is a bad as fuck guitarist he will go down as one of the greatest of all time his range of sound and creative vision is incredible. Every album has a new sound coming from him. Very very good guitarist

So they started out as a funk metal band with Chino doing The Cure/The Smiths style vocals. Not surprising since the majority of the early nu metal bands started out playing funk metal (LAPD/Korn, Powerman 5000, Incubus, Sugar Ray, Snot).
Chi played Musicman Stingrays back then until after Adrenaline when he started playing P-basses. He’s doing a lot more w the Stingray here bc it’s a more diverse bass.

BUT, he's playing a G&L L1000 here, which does have Music Man-ish looks (it's Leo Fender's final brand after all) and a fat humbucker pickup, but that humbucker is in the P-bass sweet spot so it's a lot more like a souped up P-bass (with maybe just a hint of Stingray if he ever puts it in parallel mode).
Love this. So cool seeing them starting to find their sound. And kudos to Liz for knowing how to have fun with the interview and growing along with the bands goofy answers.

Chino's voice is absolutely beautiful on this. The generally all sound great on this. I also love how when he jumps around at 8:09 the video lags behind a bit and creates this cool ass ghosting effect
Lizz is a great interviewer. How many hosts do you see just get lost the second a band won't answer and goof around, but she is all into it all and gets the band enamored with her and to chat!

all of their influences do....they're so young...all they had was the music they listened to for inspiration at that point....and it sounds GREAT...a clear mix of different styles....kind of original....they sound like one day they'll be stars.....Chino's vocals are a clue to where they would be headed one day.....his singing is very creative and ambitious here...that's the real sign here that these kids are on their way

oh my goodness. i went to look thru youtube to find their roots and just go through from there since ive watched a couple shows in the 2000s and the recent lolapalooza. their humble beginnings are ASTONISHINGLY impressive! its cool to see how the group evolved and how abe wasnt here yet. chi and steph are super awesome and the reggae riffs that transition back to their metal rock sound is crazy. i wasnt that aware how much people experimented with rock like this! what i love the most about this is how chino's voice is a lot more exposed vocally with singing and not yet the hard core stuff he worked up to later on! his tone is so beautiful. thanks for sharing this dude.

Finding a sound is an amazing journey that we never appreciate enough, and most musicians hide their past to give an impression that they were always perfect... The sound and character of the guitar however is quite consistent to later songs though. Chino touches on finding his voice, though then loses it.
