I’m playing Ti Moune in my school’s “Once on This Island Jr.”, and I’m really nervous for this solo. I’m only a sixth grader, so the youngest at my middle school, but I guess the theatre teacher saw something in me. I just really want to prove myself, even though I’m the youngest. Any advice?
alright kid, mama maura is about to give you some advice. i’m assuming you’re nervous that some older kids are gonna give you crap for getting the lead. this advice actually comes from a standby on the mean girls cast so i can’t take credit for it but it’s really good. show up to rehearsals early. be the first one off book. work so hard that they can’t even say anything bad about you. your director definitely saw something in you if she cast you in the integral role. he/she wouldn’t put you there if they didn’t think you could do it. now in terms of advice with this solo, acting wise, sometimes it’s easy to go through the motions of lyrics and forget what they mean. i recommend that you go through the lines and lyrics in your script and find what you think is important for the audience to know, what you think you can make funny, or what you think is interesting. for example, in the beginning, ti moune talks about driving a car and zooms around the stage. but if you’re looking for advice, vocal wise, practice is key. take apart the song measure by measure in the beginning, then sing it through. some good advice i got from a music director is to go through the song backwards if you feel like you’re not progressing. and remember to take a nice deep breath before you perform, i know it sounds cliche but it’s true. remember that, at that moment, nothing else matters but your connection with the audience. there are some really great videos on katherine steele’s channel about some of the things you’ve mentioned. i recommend you look them up, she has a whole playlist of advice videos. break a leg girl!

So, my school does a musical every year, and this year it was Once on this Island. I thought it would be fun to be on crew, but when I went to the info meeting, it turns out one of the parts was background dancers to represent water and stuff, and I LOVE dancing. So, I decided to be on crew and be a dancer. The problem was, I had to audition which included singing. I am scared to sing in front of pretty much anyone, so i did NOT want to do this at all. But I auditioned anyways, and when saw the results, I GOT TI MOUNE. Now I don't know if I should keep this opportunity, or ask them if I could be something else. Whenever I say something about this, the teachers usually just say, " Oh, you don't have to do the part. You can change your mind any time you want." I guess they saw something in me, but I don't see it. Any advice? Edit: The show is tomorrow I'm so nervous! Wish me luck!
that’s a really cool story! Tough position to be in, you could try asking your teachers or peers for more specific advice but in the end the choice is up to you: do you think the challenge would be fun? even if you feel nervous at the prospect of playing ti moune, it could be a fun chance to learn and grow, and the only way to know if you are up for the challenge is to try. if it doesn’t seem fun at all i’d ask for a different part, but otherwise you might just find out what your teachers saw in you!
Alana Parker practice singing as much as possible to be able to sing ti Mounes notes. Watch lots of videos of ti moune to really learn her character. And most importantly, chill our and have fun!!! I’ve done 14 shows and I’ve learned that the best thing to do is have fun and chill. I’ve just recently tried out to be ti moune too so wish me luck!

So, my school does a musical every year, and this year it was Once on this Island. I thought it would be fun to be on crew, but when I went to the info meeting, it turns out one of the parts was background dancers to represent water and stuff, and I LOVE dancing. So, I decided to be on crew and be a dancer. The problem was, I had to audition which included singing. I am scared to sing in front of pretty much anyone, so i did NOT want to do this at all. But I auditioned anyways, and when saw the results, I GOT TI MOUNE. Now I don't know if I should keep this opportunity, or ask them if I could be something else. Whenever I say something about this, the teachers usually just say, " Oh, you don't have to do the part. You can change your mind any time you want." I guess they saw something in me, but I don't see it. Any advice?

that’s a really cool story! Tough position to be in, you could try asking your teachers or peers for more specific advice but in the end the choice is up to you: do you think the challenge would be fun? even if you feel nervous at the prospect of playing ti moune, it could be a fun chance to learn and grow, and the only way to know if you are up for the challenge is to try. if it doesn’t seem fun at all i’d ask for a different part, but otherwise you might just find out what your teachers saw in you!
Alana Parker practice singing as much as possible to be able to sing ti Mounes notes. Watch lots of videos of ti moune to really learn her character. And most importantly, chill our and have fun!!! I’ve done 14 shows and I’ve learned that the best thing to do is have fun and chill. I’ve just recently tried out to be ti moune too so wish me luck!

@@clarence5211 Thanks, I've been practicing a lot and I'm starting to really like it. It is really fun so far! Everyone is so nice to me and they always say good job or something when we're singing and they are very supportive! So, I think I may stick with this part.
