The Raven Guard were the XIX Legion of the original Space Marine Legions. Their Primarch is Corvus Corax . Their homeworld is Deliverance (originally named Lycaeus), a moon which orbits the Hive World Kiavahr. The Legion was devastated at the outbreak of the Horus Heresy and survived only by the most desperate of measures.
The Raven Guard specialize in guerrilla warfare, moving behind enemy lines with unrivaled stealth and striking with precise application of force.

Fun coincidence, in the wild Raven’s and Wolves have learned to be natural friends. Ravens find prey for Wolves and then get to share. There’s even documented accounts of Ravens playing fetch with wolf pups.

So fun fact. Remember those first 500 members of the Raptor project who weren't messed up? Who as Bricky put it, turned out really good. They formed the Raptors successor chapter, and as a result have more stable geneseed than their parent chapter.
They are also canon "reasonable marines" as they wear drab green armor (often with camo), specialize in snipers and marksmen, and overall act more like actual modern-day special forces in terms of their tactics

    • @midnightecho8228
      @midnightecho8228 Год назад +35

No, the raptors chapters are not from the successful raptors of the raptor project, at least it's never truly confirmed. If they were truly from the raptors of the raptor project, it'd be weirdly stupid decision as the successful raptors of the raptor projects are essentially what you call a "space marine premium upgrade".
If the primaris marine are side grades of the firstborn space marine, raptors from the project are essentially in between primarch and space marine level, just below custodians. The initiates that went under the surgery were able to spar against veterans in a 9:1 ratio, almost completely dominating the veterans in hand to hand combat, even the mutated ones were able to fight a space wolf wulfen(?) in melee fairly easily.
If anything these guys would most likely have either stayed in the main chapter and the raptor chapters were just named in memory of those that died in the project, or the chapter just have a few of the remaining raptor as overseer. Since why would you have one of your best elite squad all be removed from your main legion?

    • @thewerdna
      @thewerdna Год назад +16

@midnightecho8228 the reason they aren't as good as the full raptor marines is because there wouldn't have been enough of those to make a full chapter. Thus their superior geneseed got mixed with standard Ravenguard geneseed.
Thus they only really got the benefits of more stable geneseed, but lost all the other improvements
Essentially having the superior raptor geneseed has long since been diluted within the chapter, but still had helped them be more stable and less prone to geneseed flaws. Like the only flaw they still have is the super pale skin: none of the other Ravenguard issues are present in the chapter

    • @midnightecho8228

A notable Ravenguard that needs to be talked about in some future episode is Nykona Sharrowkyn. He was a Heresy era marine and considered in the top 5 greatest Astartes fighters in history.
His most notable feat is he is the only known person to kill Lucius without turning into him. Since he felt zero pride doing so, since as he told Lucius himself "It gives me no pleasure to do this. You are nothing to me, simply a rabid dog that needs to be put down."
He also successfully snipes Fulgrim in the head (Fulgrim lives because he's a primarch, and he had the fastest regeneration of any of his brothers second only to Vulcan)

Fun fact: darker greens, greys, and especially blues are often better for stealth than pitch black because a black silhouette shows up more easily visually against backgrounds, because pitch black shows up very little in nature
That said, the black paint we use on stuff like stealth bombers helps to counteract radar by absorbing it and converting it into heat, so I like to imagine that's one reason the Ravenguard use black armor

    • @hammer1349

@@hammer1349 funny thing is we have something extremely similar IRL with the some of the blackest paints such as Vanta Black, Blk 2. 0, and Blk 3 .0
As that's just how black as a color works, it absorbs visible light rather than bouncing it back like normal colors, iirc Vantablack absorbs around 99.6% of all light and Blk 2. 0 is supposed to be darker than that, so it would still just kinda make them look like a very black smudge in reality.
There's always some form of background lighting or radiation that gives a slight "glow" to things (even human beings "glow" a little bit) so funnily at a certain point except for a few circumstances you would actually be counterintuitively making yourself stick out more by being "too dark" for a dark environment

The second is when they become belligerent, uncaring for their own safety and actively refusing to follow orders, drawing further and further inside themselves. Eventually they do become practically suicidal and there is rarely recovery from this point. Another fun fact: supposedly this is the reason for the creation of the first Moritat during the great crusade, corax himself authorising it and maximising what marines he has. All legions created moritats following the efficacy of those of the raven.
Wraithslip is very much a rare thing among the raven guard and their successors, like in 40k they are a hanful across all sons of corax. It seems to have some form psychic component to it, willing the enemy to not register their presence in their minds but it is only made better through discipline and training. Muffling their armour etc is stuff they learn as scouts but likely improved upon when in armour.
Stealth isn't their only thing though. A tank doesnt have to be stealthy. Hell, I believe it is the Black Guard successor chapter that makes extensive use of vindicators in sudden and devastating ambushes
As far as i know, the iron hands basically only showed up with a bucket load of terminators backing up Ferrus. The backlash from that mess is what caused the whole cybernetic obsession.

In fairness wraithslipping is one of the strongest powers to have, as shown by Sharrowkyn using it to kill Lucius in a duel. I'd be curious to see what's the prevalence of wraithslipping is compared to other traits like foresight in the Night Lords. The guys who could wraithslip were known as the Mors Deythan I believe and although they have been reinstated after the fall of Cadia, the Lexicanum lists the current number of members as 4.

The Raven Guard(and its successors) one of the few(?) chapters that act like actual modern SF(Knightly SF)or well as close at gets. With the Primaris marines they would have loved the phobos power armour and the Vanguard marines archetypes. Also its always funny to me picturing a 7ft Super soldier in bulky power armour doing stealth and that the chapter/legion that excels in stealth but tends to be the GW's punching bag(This hurts me yet its funny at the same time).

The Raven Guard are one of the chapters that has a vague presence in the Spinward Front, so one of the times I employed Space Marines in Only War, it was a squad of Raven Guard clearing out a gun fortress on the down-low while the Imperial Guard was trying to break through. All the Guard knew was that occasionally one of the big scary Punisher Cannons on the gun fortress would just... stop shooting. When they finally got into the fortress, there were just bodies *everywhere*.

If you guys want to do an episode on a Raven Guard character, Nykona Sharrowkyn is your guy. The chaddiest chad of the entire Heresy!
Very happy to see my favorite legion getting some spotlight! The Raven Guard really needs some more lore and love from both GW and the 40K community at large. Yeah, Space Wolves and Raven Guard have a nice relationship; Corvus, after all, saved Leman Russ' life during the Heresy at Yarant.
I wouldn't say that they have never recovered from the Dropsite Massacre...that was 10,000 years ago. The real issue with the Raven Guard and their lower numbers (compared to other legions/chapters) is the corruption of their gene-seed (thanks Alpha Legion). Overall, though, the RG has never been a large legion, even before the Heresy, as they really don't need to be, considering their role, tactics, and specialty.

They review recordings of their battles and probe for even the sleightest mistake so as to correct it for the future. So, something that’s easily forgotten is that 40K is a Sci-Fi taking place 38,000 years into the future. What seems impossible to us in the present may very well be easily achieved because someone figured it out how to achieve it, and the Imperium is simply replicating it without fully understanding it.
So, the Corvus Pattern armor, whose name sake comes from Corvus Corax and is a mainstay of the Raven Guard since the Heresy, may very well be utilizing all sorts of instruments and equipment that we don’t know of to run completely silently.
Think of the Tesla cars. Their engines are completely silent despite being cars. It’s not hard to imagine that at some point in the far future someone could have figured out how to get a suit of power armor to do the same, especially a chapter as dedicated to Special Forces tactics as the Raven Guard.
Also, that’s another thing. The Raven Guard aren’t just stealth. They’re Special Forces. They perform surgical and decapitating strikes on an unsuspecting enemy. If a Thunderhawk full of Dark Furies (the Horus Heresy models DK was fawning over) flies by, sure the approach will be completely silent but the slaughter that’ll ensue will not.
This is also why I love the Raven Guard (and Alpha Legion) so much. They use their super soldiers like they’re supposed to be. Not sitting behind walls, but as javilen driven clean through the heart of the enemy, one with the raw bulk to make sure nothing can stop it.

My take on the Raven Guard-brand stealth has always been that with the “lightning-fast-assault” archetype of fantasy warfare that space marines in general are based around, you don’t need to stay completely undetected for the entire fight/operation. You just need your opponent to detect you a second too late.

i think one thing that's neat about the legions, is that while they might have been known for one specific trait, that their modern chapter still does, when they were a legion that was just their specialty. they utilized all different kinds of warfare and weapons, even stuff they found distasteful.
the Iron Warriors still had light recon
the Raven guard still had heavy infantry and siege units
the white scars still had chemical weapons and so forth.
but when the legions broke up only the chapter that retained the name kept those main traits. while all the successors went with whatever they specialized in.

One of my favorite things about Raven Guard that y'all didn't mention is all the references to the Native American cultures.
Their way of battle is very "native american" with hiding from the enemy and picking them off from as far away as possible or getting as close to the enemy as they can and forcing them to fight in mele. One of their initiation trials is sending an aspirant onto the surface of Kiavahr where they're tasked with catching a raven whose bones they then use to craft an amulet they carry with them at all times which also doubles as a sachet where they keep small bits and bobs that are important to them. And something which makes them really cool in my eyes is that they give a damn about civilians, they care arguably just as much as the Salamanders. They have a different way of showing that and they're more pragmatic about helping out mortal humans than the Salamanders, but they do care and not being able to help bothers them, makes them angry and sad.

I plan to rectify that in the future when i make my own version

~12:00 Corax and Russ getting along has some fun parallels, as in the wild wolves and ravens often get along closely, since ravens scavenge from wolf kills, and wolves are sometimes led to carrion by ravens. plus in scandinavian myth, Ravens were symbols of warriors, as well as the messengers of odin.

I'd be interested in trying out their wine...I suppose I'd really only need a sip of it to feel those affects lmfao. Ravens are genuinely some pretty intelligent animals and very uh personable(attitudes and all that jazz). It'd be cool to see more of these guys and their Primark.

If the goth-punk vibes of the Ravenguard is "The world is dark, but there can be beauty in that and we will fight to ensure that", then the edginess that people correctly dislike is "the world is dark, so I'll be darker and also that is a justification for me to be a monster".

The idea that a silencer would do anything for a bolter is hilarious given that you are firing a projectile which has not only a build in rocket to propel it, but also explodes when it hits the target.

I suppose people are still going to know someone just got half their body removed by an explosion but they might not know where the explosion came from. It could just be something to launch it a short distance away before the rocket ignites. For targets that aren't incredibly armoured they can always take a leaf out of Corvus's book who killed several Iron Warriors by throwing rocks.
