- Note! This is a Biased Microphone Video since the SHURE SM81 is not a Boom Mic.
This video demonstrates the sound quality of a SHURE SM81(as a Boom Mic) hooked up to a SONY a6400 camera via a ZOOM R8 Multitrack Recorder
Closed Circuit Audio Signal Flow:
SHURE SM81 - XLR Cable (Female to Male) - Zoom R8 (Mic Input - Mono Output × 2) - Audio Cable (Double Mono 1/4" Male Jack to single stereo 1/8" male Jack) - SONY a6400 (Mic Input)
ZOOM settings (Powered by 4 x AA Batteries):
-Phantom Power: ON
-Microphone Gain: MAX
-Output Gain: 1/5
SONY a6400 setting (Stock Battery Powered):
-Audio Record Level: 1
No Post-Processing took place except for the use of a basic DeEsser plugin.
Clearly, it is an unfair comparison between the SHURE SM81 and the RODE NTG3, since the SM81 is a Professional Instrument Microphone often used to record Acoustic Guitars, while the NTG3 is a Broadcast Grade Shotgun Microphone best used as a Boom Microphone, therefore, the advantage here should go to the RODE NTG3 in this case.
