Have you played some of Taro's other games? He always runs into the trouble of combining great stories with some really dire gameplay. I imagine it's a big part of why he's been working on all of these Voice of Cards games lately, they're super unambitious and it lets him do his storytelling without all of the AAA development overhead that something like Automata would require. I see a lot of folks say that they're waiting for his next big game, but I kind of doubt we'll ever get one. But what we DID get was another banger GhoulFMV video.

do you plan on doing a stellar blade review? my initial impressions were that it looked not very good (like, not good at all lol) but then i saw a lot of people comparing it to automata and yoko taro himself said he thinks its a much better game. id love to see what you think of it because my opinion of automata lines up pretty much exactly with yours.

no plans on covering stellar blade atm but it's not impossible! i wasn't really interested in it when it was revealed but if it gets a lot of hype around it i might give it a shot. thanks for the nice comment!

To argue against your point against the combat being "boring", I do have one or two questions.
Did you engage with the weapon leveling mechanic and utilize the on the fly weapon switching?
I thought the same thing my first go around, but had a much better time when utilizing the weapon switching tools provided in game.
If the answer to either of those questions is no, then my immediate rebuttal is that the combat isn't boring! You just didn't engage fully with it. The on the fly weapon switching doesn't break attack combos, to underline that point. Leading to a lot of different ways to engage and shift combat as needed per enemy, WITHOUT breaking the stride of combat.
If the answer is yes to both questions, then I guess I just don't know what to say, and I'm sorry to hear you feel that way.

hey, thanks for the comment! i ended the game with i think 3 maxed-out weapons. out of all the types i liked swords the most so i stuck with those! i did mess around with the weapon switching a bit but i mainly just kept the engine blade on at all times once i found it because i liked its move set the most. i never found the combat to be clunky in terms of pace really (aside from with 9s) my issues were more so with limited enemy types that made encounters feel too repetitive and not as engaging as what I'm used to from platinum games. i never felt like any particular enemy required any specific strategy to tackle or that the game asks anything like that of the player. the combat just never clicked with me and i've played tons of other action jrpgs with systems i think are fantastic so it's nothing to do with genre. i really do love this game haha just didn't like what platinum did with the combat, i'm glad you were able to have fun and get even more out of the nier automata experience!
