Good review. Funny enough this game was technically my first Persona game. I thought Persona 5 Strikers was like a DMC Definitive Edition type thing (I didn't know Personas apparent love of spinoffs back then) but once I got to the first combat section, I felt like I was missing information. So I googled it and just like that, I spent the best $120 of my life. Now almost a year and a half later after playing every Persona game except for Q2 and Dancing, I can definitely say this game is still amazing

So spoiler waring for the ending of this game:
While I do see where you're coming from with the climax of the game retreading similar ground as Persona 5 that came before it, I think the way that it was handled in Strikers was actually better than in vanilla/Royal. First off, the reveal of EMMA growing into a deity of a similar caliber as Yaldabaoth due to both its Metaverse integration and all the requests it was fed from its user base convincing it that humanity wants to be controlled makes for a story beat far more impactful and does a better job of representing the apathy of the public, especially since the game was careful to showcase how EMMA was impacting people's lives throughout the entire game, starting from the moment Futaba introduces it to everyone.
In contrast, Yaldabaoth didn't really have much if any presense throughout the story; yeah he was there as the false Igor, but maybe it's just because I don't have the same history as most other Persona fans with the character of Igor, but he really didn't feel all that important to me. The Velvet Room scenes always felt like they were just there for vague and unnecessary exposition and to ensure there was a space to facilitate Persona fusion, and that you could largely ignore the fact that he was even there, so the reveal that he was a fake and especially since immediately after he was replaced by the real Igor didn't really affect me that much. Sure, the motivations for him stepping in because the ignorant masses presented a vacuum of control through their day-to-day mondanity was compelling enough, but that storyline was self contained in the Christmas Eve raid on the Depths of Mementos and didn't feel adequately explored for the rest of the game beyond vague clues sprinkled in unravelling the mysteries of Mementos. EMMA tackles this same concept in a more organic fashion thanks to the clear showcase on EMMA's functionality and how people are taking advantage of it from the start.
I also felt that the stakes of EMMA's rise were presented in a more dire light. Both Yaldabaoth and the Demiurge were threatening and actively engaging a merge between the real world and the Metaverse while assuming complete command over the desires of the masses, but the call to action for Persona 5 was ensuring that the consequences of Shido's actions stuck (so basically just an extension of why we were taking on Shido in the first place) and the ending was bizarrely putting more emphasis on that as opposed to the threat the God of Control was posing, With EMMA, the call to action is seeing EMMA being active without anybody from Madicce providing imput and suddenly putting the citizens of Tokyo and soon the rest of Japan in a trance to follow her guidance. The stakes were clear; the drive isn't split between the world end and the conspiracy of Shido, it was clear as day presentation of why we're here and what will happen if we don't succeed.

Oh and yeah the Velvet Room was absolutely butchered in this game. I overall really like this video! Strikers does happen to be something i prefer almost over the original, so its interesting to see a somewhat different opinion
One criticism i do have though, is if i remember right, isn't persona 4 arena/ultimax canonical as well? (Q and Q2 as well but too a much lesser extent). That and Futaba is actually objectively the best and I will fight
Another thing is the 'square square square triangle' setup, which, while it does work, is actually arguably not the best way to play (most) characters, with a lot of it coming down to learning and using each characters strengths and unique abilities to even outpace weakness exploiting when trying to get an all-out attack (as many abilities will specifically damage enemy 'shields'
Finally, I actually don't really agree that the palace theming falls off at the end, and Spoiler Warning:
I'm going to assume this is talking about post-osaka jail, because I dont really see how that could fit in, so, in order
Jail of Abyss: I think this is on the surface-level definitely the weakest of the jails, as it does seem to be a rehash of mementos depths, but I believe it does actually earn it, as it does serve more as touching back upon the 'public unconscious' themeing instead of having any particular jail owner, and is admittedly more of a tie-in to the last jail and time for character development. And that is somewhat important to mention, this isn't really a separate jail from the tree of knowledge, if i remember right, and therefore ties really nicely into it, in my opinion
Tree of Knowlege: This jail really does start to blur the lines between the ending of Strikers and the original Persona 5, as fundamentally the games do touch on similar things, in very different ways, but I think the point here is the same, the metaverse is blurring, and an almost religious coming of a god needs to be put to a stop. It really does feel similar to mementos depths into 5s final palace, but i really must emphasize that again it feels earned, at least to me, as the game makes very different points as too how and why things are like this.

    • @GhoulFMV
      @GhoulFMV  Год назад +1

hey thanks for comment!!!! yeah, those games mentioned are technically canonical, a lot of the spinoffs are, i just meant that they don't really significantly impact the grand story of any protags that much. at least not to the point of a direct sequel narrative-wise.
with the combo stuff, i more so felt Strikers gave you fewer opportunities to play around with the combat system later in the game and put a heavy focus on affinity-based approaches, it just happens that SSST was the first thing that came to mind and what i'd usually do as joker when a battle began lol.
you got it right about the palaces i was talking about for end game! It's not so much about if the thematic approach narratively is an issue, i think they accomplished what they were going for well, i was just hoping for an aesthetic change up from stuff we saw in 5. Both jails are a little too close visually for me, as well as the fact the game falls into the whole "now kill a god" JRPG thing again, which was a bit of a disappointment personally, not that it necessarily felt forced or anything, i just would've like to see them approach the whole "godly force" topic in a new way for Strikers.
ALSO I LIKE FUTABA HAHAHA i just played it for the bit in this video because her comms did bother me with how frequent they are in comparison to 5/royal lol shes's still great!! thanks again!

    • @flyingcat5468
      @flyingcat5468 Год назад

@@GhoulFMV No problem! I think your responses here generally cleared up a lot of what i was talking about, so I'll keep it short
I can see where you're coming from with the combo thing, I just tended towards playing Wolf/Fox in the end game, both of whom are some of the better examples for not needing that combo as heavily, so I may have generalized a bit
I can totally get the rehash criticism though, thats definitely a fair aspect i may have missed. I generally excuse it because I think it tries to make a point something along the lines of 'similar outcomes through different means' but it could totally be seen a myriad of other ways. I would say though, with the current persona stock, the 'godly force' approach primarily is only well-set up for abrahamic religions (your arch-angels and the like), since spin-offs really dont like creating new personas generally, and strikers was likely working off of, at best, you get part of 5's, probably not even royals, roster.
Futaba probably does talk a little much in strikers lol, she just happens to be my favourite so I dont mind so much. It's like morgana, who i also, like. (maybe I'm the problem???)

Just one small thing. When playing as joker the square square square triangle. combo is rarely the best way to go. When in the air, your attack speed increases and you can always use an elemental magic attack to get back down. Using your gun a lot, combined with follow ups that put you into air, and just regularly jumping increases DPS massively and is also a lot more fun.

the reason strikers is less popular than royal is that strikers is just a cheap anime musou game that releases every other year but with some nice persona flavor.
plus if you get it for the combat not only will you get bored of spamming weakness in the later stages, but the harder difficulties are straight up broken.

Meaning you were expecting fans to buy into a game when is a good chance they never played persona, five and vice versa strikers, never came to the PlayStation meeting. The people that played the original game would not be able to see the story of the sequel, unless they also had a Switch.

Im the biggest musou game supporter and defender, and everybody was extremely skeptical of this game and that it would be “boring” like everybody jumps to say ab musous.
And yet while everybody was praising this game for “not just being a musou” it was ultimately disappointing bc it lacked so much of what makes this gameplay style fun and i geniunely think they may have compromised too much btwn musou and p5’s original combat. And only having 9 characters that all feel very similar all the way through is a major crime.
But the story is pretty good. Not incredible and not as good as p5 or especially Royal, but it didnt need to do that it just needed to be enjoyable and interesting. It felt like it was somewhat paralleling the og story but giving opportunities for the p thieves to show their growth in how they confront things far more head on. (Ex haru and yusuke)
However…. Being essentially a sequel to Persona 5 BEFORE royal is also a major botch. Im not saying that oh we shouldve seen maruki again or anything, bc hes fine as he is. But like… Royal was the more realized story, the things they went through really solidified the themes of their journey. And to just effectively retcon it all for this game feels like a spit to the face.
Like oh my god, WHY ARENT KASUMI AND AKECHI PLAYABLE LIKE??? EVEN FUTABA SHOULD BE PLAYABLE, if RISE can FIST FIGHT then whats the problem?!?!

Not gonna lie, i think it improves on the original in many ways. In the original the group barely feels like friends, and Haru specifically comes so late to the party that she barely gets any development. Hell, often it seems like they hate each other, with Morgana being a dick to the boys, the girls being dicks to the boys, Ryuji being a dick to everyone that isn't the main character... And because their personal development after their inital arcs is limited to the Confidants, it can't affect the main story. In Strikers the feel like friends and a cohesive group from the beginning, and they are much less unlikeable to each other in general. Also, thematically, P5 often presents a point only to later trample all over it, and Striker stays pretty close to its themes. Also, some palaces in the original are... kinda random and also do not entirely fit or are a huuuge stretch to fit with the initial three palaces and the themes of the game. The Jails in Strikers are pretty consistent with the rules presented and the themes, and while some of the connections of the party with the Palace havers were stronger, others were very weak, instead in Strikers at least one member of the party has something to say specifically about every villain on a moral or ideological level. It's a pretty damn good sequel in terms of writing.
Also other people have pointed it out, but the fighting Persons 4 games are as much a canonical sequel as Strikers

I tried P5S for a bit then dropped it midway through the first jail. I guess I'm really nitpicky about this game since the reason why I kept playing P5R and what made me love it a lot more is definitely the UI design and the art. The UI of Persona 5 is just so good it's both stylish and functional, I was very impressed with how cohesive it is. On P5S though, people might argue that the UI is just as stylish as P5R, in my personal opinion atleast, I think P5S tried so hard to be like the original in terms of UI design and it kinda didn't work for me. I'm not saying the game is bad because of this though, it just bothered me I guess and I didn't really liked how they designed the UI in P5S. It didn't felt like Persona 5 for me, kinda felt like a bit of a cheap knock off.

To answer the question in the title, yes and no. But I feel it's more of a spin-off if anything

The story takes place directly after P5. And provides a more satisfying end. Especially after playing both P5 and this game. It feels like one massive story. Obviously gameplay differs but the story for me is canon to P5 and just adds on to an already amazing game.

imo peak turn based combat was smt v because it had all of the quality of life changed p5 did while also bringing in things from other smt games

While I agree with many points you brought up, I kinda have to disagree with the theming of the game being worse at the end. While yes it is similar to 5, it actually pulls off the whole merged real world and metaverse concept better than the equivalent point in the original. I also found that honestly combat became more interesting as you got later, because standard persona combos started to feel weaker and making use of the different combo moves that each persona joker can fuse and making use of other party members combos that include debuffs and buffs. I actually really dont like the start of the game compared to the latter half. The first 3 jails theming feels almost too over the top and the music of these jails gets grating unlike the jails following them. The boss of the ice themed jail also feels really out of place given their distortion and it almost feels like the story for that section was changed later in development. This part of the game feels like it goes on forever as well due to exposition that doesnt actually push the story much and in general feeling much weaker compared to the enemies. Also ai party members need to stop using sp by themselves I swear to god
TL;DR: I significantly prefer the latter half of the game and find the early game grindy and boring, but actually really enjoyed the latter half, ad feel that its ending actually executed some of its themes better than the original (still not as cool as shooting god in the head tho).

So, P5S doesn't have any ultimate Personas or Ultima weapons anymore?

I would've preferred a devil may cry style of gameplay, but this isn't bad, it just got kinda old

So far, I detest Strikers. Been a long time fan of the Persona series and I’m too embarrassed to even mention the hours put into the base games. Yet this spinoff - I hate it.

After beating Strikers, i'm finally able to say, Persona 5 Strikers has a JoJo reference, you know where it is.

I didn’t like this game that much but admittedly it’s one of the better warriors spin-off
Warriors gameplay gets me bored pretty quick unfortunately

No cause it’s not more of a sequel than P4 arena is to P4. Saying it’s a sequel is misleading, these spin offs have was less going for them and a lot less ambition as well, no reason to treat them as such.
