  • Here is the evening news report from Election Night 1968. This was the last time Huntley Brinkley anchored a Presidential Election, they anchored every election of the decade during the 1960's, and possibly the 1956 election as well, but I have no past evidence to prove it. The two were greats at what they did, but I think by this point they did not get along as good as they did in 1960. Huntley would leave two years later and the Brinkley became the editorial man of the NBC Nightly News, with John Chancellor.
The studio has improved greatly since the 1960 coverage, with each state getting it's own board plus the ablity to project a state by their computers. There coverage is way faster than the CBS coverage I also have. I have not seen the ABC coverage as of yet, but it looks simple compared to the other two. I will do dual uploads of the coverage of CBS and NBC until about 11:00, when the Vanderbuilt Coverage ends and the NBC coverage continues. You will all see when I get there. Enjoy this clip first!

I remember that election night well ..although I was only 9yrs old .. I remember it to be very exciting.. I remember being outside my school and the buttons and posters and bumper stickers that were in abundance.
This is a Great Country. God Bless America 🇺🇸.

I think the first few seconds of this newscast are missing.
It would be the introduction by Chet Huntley and David Brinkley, which usually went "Chet Huntley, NBC News New York/And David Brinkley, NBC News Washington".
But on this night, their introduction probably went "Chet Huntley, at NBC News Election Central, New York/And David Brinkley, also at NBC News Election Central in New York".

I think the first few seconds of this newscast are missing.
Chet Huntley and David Brinkley would normally begin with them saying "I'm Chet Huntley, NBC News, New York", then "And I'm David Brinkley, NBC News Washington".
I would think that the missing opening seconds would be "I'm Chet Huntley, at the NBC News Election Central, New York" and "And I'm David Brinkley, also at the NBC News Election Central in New York".
This was a black-and-white tape recorded by the Vanderbilt University TV news archives (you can tell by the time code on top of the screen).
This newscast was originally produced and broadcast in color (NBC began colorcasting "Huntley/Brinkley" starting in the Fall of 1965).

Notice how hard it was to spot bias in the reporting back then? It was surely there but was very sophisticated, always careful to keep their bias genuinely deniable. At this time, I was quite young and it bounced right off me; just as it was intended. But by '70 or so, I had seen enough to begin to get a sense of what was actually going on. The increasingly bias Vietnam war reporting started to lift the veil for me.

Even so, it's still a lot better than today's model of constant outrage.

Chet Huntley and David Brinkley were first paired at the 1956 conventions.
FYI: The New Hampshire results were all from Dixville Notch, where voting was completed just after 12:01 A.M. EST.
That night, there was just one feed of "Huntley/Brinkley" at 6:30 P.M. EST (5:30 CST, 4:30 MST, and 3:30 PST), with live coverage starting at 7 P.M. EST and continuing well i nto the next morning.

Very cool to get a sense of the world situation on this Election Night, with the status of the Vietnam peace talks and Middle East.

It merely showed how out of touch with the real world Cronkite truly was.

is the cbs evening news available from election day 11/5 and the day after, 11/6??? i remember cronkite looking sick and talking about "the politcal comeback of the century" reminding everyone that nixon was a loser on 11/6 and exhibited phoney optimism on 11/5.

Huntley & Brinkley did indeed co-host NBC's coverage of the 1956 election night. they were matched up during the conventions that summer, and easily beat CBS & Walter Cronkite in the ratings. In response, Edward R. Murrow was matched up with Cronkite in the booth at the 1960 conventions. The only chemistry they had onscreen was bad chemistry - neither was used to sharing the limelight, plus they didn't really like each other in the first place.

The New Hampshire totals seen at 1:21 of this clip were all from the tiny village of Dixville Notch, where polls on Election Day open at 12:01 A.M., and close as soon as all the town's registered voters finish casting ballots (which usually happens by 12:05 A.M. Eastern time).
Once everyone casts ballots, the polls are declared closed and the results announced.
For the next eighteen hours, they're the only "hard numbers" for a Presidential election that are made public.

Er, thanks, maybe, but let's consider that Huntley/Brinkley were initially "radio/field-reporters." These men were very mentally quick/articulate - and (back in the day) video cameras were not an issue. Mr. Huntley was a very bright and spot-on journalist - and you fault him for a lack of TV camera awareness? "Lights, camera, action!" is best saved for the community playhouse.

This was when t.v. went off air early and no all night stations. Just the station pattern and the wait till morning, so all night reporting was an event .
