Chet Huntley was a true journalist in every sense of the word. CNN and all the other news agencies (and even Fox) could stand to take lessons from him. Especially when he said that people are called upon to speak too quickly. How true in this day and age. Rest In Peace, Mr Huntley. May your works and words follow you as an example to the world!
The irony of this show is that in spite of the sadness Chet Huntley must have experienced at ending a long and impressive career as a distinguished journalist and an end as well to the most popular newscast program on TV at that time ‘The Huntley-Brinkley Report’, he was going to retire to his beloved Montana and his ranch. Little did he or anyone know that he would have only a brief time to enjoy it as he would die of lung cancer just four short years later in 1974. Goodnight and goodbye Chet.
Only Dick Cavett would have a diverse panel of guests such as this on his program. Janis Joplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Chet Huntley and Raquel Welch. This is but one example.
What a diverse panel. One of the most distinguished actors of our time, one of the best female singers back then and one of the most beautiful actresses and one of the most respected news anchors of that time all together. Seems like Cavett and his staff really knew how to put an interesting show together.
When Chet Huntley left the Huntley-Brinkley Report in 1970, I was only 20 months old. I don't blame Huntley for proclaiming the supremacy of American journalism. It did many great things in those days, not the least of which was expose the unfairness of civil rights violations and the futility of America's involvement in the Vietnam war. Such a claim cannot be made anymore, and that is too bad.
This interview had more to it. In the latter part Chet Huntley told the audience what was wrong with the news media. If there is anyway to post that portion as well would be great. Thanks for this.
How about that incredible leg Raquel Welch is shooting! Huntley can't control himself, he's so enamored with her. I sure can't blame him. "The Huntley Brinkley Report" was the best evening newscast ever. Although contemporary culture seems focused on Walter Cronkite, "The Huntley Brinkley Report" was number one in the ratings. After Huntley retired, Cronkite overtook the NBC Nightly News. When AFTRA went on strike, Huntley crossed the picket line, Brinkley did not. Huntley appeared nervous that evening. Huntley revealed he was a Republican, but emphasized he always did all he could to not let his political preference show in his reporting. Raquel was 30 at the time of this interview. She's a good Republican girl too. "Good night Chet. And good night for NBC News."
I remember i dressed as him for a school history thing. A lot of older people came up to me since i was talking about where he lived how he made it and where he was born. And all the older people said,”I remember him” and the younger kids not knowing who he is.
I get a kick out of your comment! In the early '90s, when I was eleven, I daydreamed about having black-and-white studio portrait photos taken of me as Chet Huntley and Walter Cronkite.
I once had an idiot slimeball of a Drama prof, who said he was glad HUntley was retiring, because "he is a very bitter man." What poop! I never saw a scintilla of bitterness in Chet Huntley.
Douglas Fairbanks is sitting next to Janis. May God, what a stellar guest list. Janis passed on that year, Chet in 74 and Fairbanks in 2000. You think Joplin would have outlived Fairbanks but not to be.
Doesn't it suck to work hard so many years - as Chet recounts - only to finally get retirement - return to Montana, enjoy barely a year or so if that of 'the good life' - only to drop dead 4 years later.
Its very cringeworthy when Janis and Raquel weigh in on whether Huntley will enjoy his retirement. Sadly he had few years to live, so it was for the best personally. He almost got to see his big ranch open up in Montana
I have a feeling that his conservative politics had something to do with his leaving too. Network news was becoming increasingly liberal in the 70s. This was about 10 years before Rush Limbaugh made it cool to be a conservative media figure, so it must have been uncomfortable for Chet Huntley.
I'm sure Mr. Huntley had more planned for himself than just sitting down and watching tv all day. As for Raquel, she was most likely best just sitting down with her mouth closed and just smiling.
":...American journalism always is the best anywhere in the world." - Chet Huntley Maybe it's a good thing you're not alive today to see what's happened to your "American journalism" and how it has crawled into the Obama presidential bed and kept warm wrapped with the blanket of liberal, progressive socialism, and how it works to keep the American people uninformed of what is truly going on in our government. Yes Mr. Huntley, I'm sorry to say, you would shake your head in disappointment.
Chester Robert "Chet" Huntley fue un presentador de noticias de la televisión estadounidense, más conocido por ser copresentador del programa de noticias vespertino de NBC, The Huntley-Brinkley Report, durante 14 años a partir de 1956.

RIP Raquel Welch as well, February 2023 . . .
Chet Huntley, one of the greats....thanks for sharing.

Chet Huntley coverage of Apollo 13 what a total legend he was.
I'd forgotten what a great voice he had.
Chet Huntley was a great newsman.
Chet Huntley and Janis Joplin hanging out together: Whoda thunk it??
You never know. One of Paul Harvey's favorite golfing buddies was Alice Cooper! Whoda thunk it, indeed.
Dick Cavett would have thunk-that's who! Please, can we have a time machine and go back to these years of television?
Loved the man's voice..

Dick was a genius,. Look at the panel and how civil they all are.
He passed only 4 years later. Don't smoke kids.
Janis Joplin passed 71 days later. Don't do drugs, either.
Also don't smoke cigarettes.

great show with Janice Joplin, Raquel Welch and Chet Huntley
He seemed down to earth yet a consummate professional as a journalist.
This interview had more to it. In the latter part Chet Huntley told the audience what was wrong with the news media. If there is anyway to post that portion as well would be great. Thanks for this.
Very, very wonderful, as are the other clips with Mr. Huntley and Mr. Cavett. Thank you!
Great conversation with all involved.
My God, what a group of guests!
These greatest generation journalists were the best. Cronkite,, Douglas Edwards, Sevareid and of course Huntley/Brinkley.
How about that incredible leg Raquel Welch is shooting! Huntley can't control himself, he's so enamored with her. I sure can't blame him.

Huntley-Brinkley was my choice for news.
that voice of Huntley's........
Mrs. Huntley not only came back to Montana, she ran for the U.S. House in 1978 (she was defeated in the primary)
Good night Chet. Good night David.
I think Chet likes Raquel.
He liked women.
I thought Chet was going to jump Rachel's bones any minute.
I once had an idiot slimeball of a Drama prof, who said he was glad HUntley was retiring, because "he is a very bitter man." What poop! I never saw a scintilla of bitterness in Chet Huntley.
Chet was a Montana boy!
My goodness. I used to love The Dick Cavett Show. (And... well... Raquel is cute, as well).
incredible, he only got to enjoy his retirement for 4 years. he died just 4 years after this interview took place of cancer :(
coffeehigh420 He was a heavy smoker like most journalists of that era were.
it must have made his day sitting next to Raquel.
Douglas Fairbanks is sitting next to Janis. May God, what a stellar guest list. Janis passed on that year, Chet in 74 and Fairbanks in 2000. You think Joplin would have outlived Fairbanks but not to be.
06:42 Is your wife going to Montana with you?
Now THAT's a great joke with Chet's fixation with Raquel. Cavett, you damn genious.
what would Chet have thought about the "instant deadline" 24 hour cable TV news world we live in today
Wonder what Mr. Huntley would think about CNN?
Modern talk shows have one guest at a time and this sort of mix is impossible.
Modern day talk shows couldn't find four guests interesting enough to make me want to watch these days.
Doesn't it suck to work hard so many years - as Chet recounts - only to finally get retirement - return to Montana, enjoy barely a year or so if that of 'the good life' - only to drop dead 4 years later.
He would have hated it, I'm sure. It really is disgusting what has happened to Journalism.
drags on cigs and coke pipes are more deadly than too much TV.....
I hope to God that Mrs.Tippy Huntley..Chet's wife didn't hear him say that about Ms.Welch?
The problem of not thinking enough before reacting has only gotten worse since this was produced. Much worse.
I just don't agree and have to fake it and its not what I signed up for
lol damn, how many people were in this interview?
also, didn't he die of lung cancer?
He died too young, not long after retiring.
Seems he has a little fixation on Racquel -Ya think!
@xander7ful I wouldnt compare Huntley and Limbaugh.
Well, before you diss on Limbaugh, he isn't a journalist, for starters.
Its very cringeworthy when Janis and Raquel weigh in on whether Huntley will enjoy his retirement. Sadly he had few years to live, so it was for the best personally. He almost got to see his big ranch open up in Montana
Janis only had a few months to live
Janis Joplin only about two months before her death
I have a feeling that his conservative politics had something to do with his leaving too. Network news was becoming increasingly liberal in the 70s. This was about 10 years before Rush Limbaugh made it cool to be a conservative media figure, so it must have been uncomfortable for Chet Huntley.
Janis made more sense than Chet.
I'm sure Mr. Huntley had more planned for himself than just sitting down and watching tv all day. As for Raquel, she was most likely best just sitting down with her mouth closed and just smiling.
