Fer De Lance close encounter

- Mollie and I were hiking today and she spotted a Fer-de-lance on the trail in Rainmaker park, Costa Rica. It decided to come and check us out! It wanted to hide in my bag! Most dangerous snake in Costa Rica, and it was a big one at that.
Lived in the Canal Zone for a bit over three years. Was in the jungle quite often, many times for several days at a time. Saw Fer de Lance almost daily, usually several each day. They were very territorial. They knew where their territory began and ended. Stop short of that boundary and they left you alone. Step over that boundary they came after you. Step back over that boundary and they would go back to where they were sunning themselves. Had one of my men step over a fallen log and before his foot hit the ground his boot was struck and the snake’s fangs were embedded into the lugs on the sole of his boot. Man that guy could dance! Eventually, the fangs broke off and the snake left the scene. Took our medic about ten minutes to pull both fangs out of the sole of the boot. Didn’t want to leave them embedded in the boot for fear someone could get hurt if they made inadvertent contact with them. The other snake we would see fairly often was the Bushmaster. Usually, they were coiled up in the vines and limbs above the trail waiting for food to pass below. When something would pass underneath that looked to be a meal the snake would fall out of its resting place and onto whatever it was underneath. Usually, the fall was such that it would daze the prey long enough for the snake to bite and kill its meal. Both snakes made one keep on guard and watch were they were going. Didn’t want to step near a Fer de Lance or pass underneath a Bushmaster. Could ruin one’s day.
A bushmaster is on my list of snakes to see. Difficult to find in Costa Rica from what I understand. Gorgeous animal as well.
@@MrNicholaslarghi - As with many animals, insects and plants, the really pretty ones are often the most dangerous.
@@OkieSketcher1949works that way with human beings too
@@stantheman9072 - As much as I hate to admit it, you are correct sir.
Saw both the Fer de Lance and Bushmaster when I was in Costa Rica last July. Very close to the Bushmaster. He was pointed out by our guide but blended in so well with the floor of the jungle, he would have been almost impossible to spot. Loved seeing him and got a couple of good pictures--a highlight of the trip!
I developed narrow hiking trails down in Los Buzos, Panama and was ALWAYS alert for the Fer-da-lance. In Centro America they are called “Barba Amirilla”. A horrific snake to receive a bite from!
oh yea, they deliver a nasty bite, but they're a beautiful snake.
Our most common name is X. Or Terciopelo ( Velvet).
Stupid guy thinks he is so cool total lack of awareness or knowledge about this snake
Unfortunately tourists in places like Costa Rica have no clue as to the dangers nearby.
you're right sometimes they don't. this was a wish-list animal for me. I was so happy to see one in the wild and in good health!
Also though, most of the time it's pretty safe in the forest. The roads are far far more dangerous.
A friend of mine, thought he was "ONE WITH NATURE" and used to photograph snakes. REALLY REALLY REALLY STUPID ! He was bitten on the arm by a Cottonmouth. They left the wound OPEN,and scrubbed it for MONTHS. His arm looked like Popeye's forearm. His skin was stretched so far it looked like a red drum. When they FINALLY stitched his arm shut 6 MONTHS LATER, he had a scar from above his elbow, all the way to his wrist. And his arm stayed HUGE for a long time after. Snakes are NOT cute or nice or something to get near to. Use your brains !!!!!!
I've been around snakes for many years, I also used to hunt pythons in Florida. I've encountered many venomous snakes. I do use my brains. Sorry to hear about your friend, cottonmouths are not nearly as venomous as the snake in this video. Sounds like maybe he was handling the snake? Cottonmouths are super chill typically. You can photograph snakes and not get bit, it's all about how you do it. I've photographed tiger snakes and death adders in Australia with little issue.
@@MrNicholaslarghi He took pics of snakes all the time. Just a matter of time my friend
@@marktibbetts3799 that’s where risk mitigation comes into play. It’s not always a matter of time. I use specific techniques to avoid being struck by venomous snakes.
I have read that the most snakebites in my state are caused by drinking teenage boys who find them and try to pick them up. NOT TOO BRIGHT !!
@@javadog6288 that's most snake bites in general. most of them happen when people try to kill the snake. In Costa Rica most people get bit because these snakes are often hiding in a brush pile on a farm, they can be hidden very well.
The bravest man can scream like a little girl under certain circumstances.
In this case, that snake would make me squeak! So deadly, and fast!
Normally, I only have one poisonous snake in the area, and it is very rare,
so I am not on high alert when snakes are near, but these guys make you
paranoid as they don't give warning!
Thanks for sharing this guy, he was beautiful! And they keep the rodent
population down as well!
Wow the snake is impressive! I thought it was going to hide inside your bag!
Interesting to observe the guy’s behavior change from nonchalance to Oh, no😳 as the snake moved toward him then his bag. And rightfully so
One of the last snakes on earth that you would want to get a bite from.
X, Fer der lance, terciopelo, velvet is a very fast stricking viper !!! Panama Canal Area is a very common ground por Bothrops family, including the top, de X.
It’s not the snake you see that is the problem.
true, but there were no other snakes in the area at this time, just this guy
@@MrNicholaslarghi My remark was general, not directed at you or your activity. I worked 11 years at a major U.S. zoological park, most of that time with venomous or otherwise dangerous reptiles. Before we opened a cage or went into one, we counted every head. Reptile camouflage works too well to do otherwise. Some mistakes can only be made once.
@@rascal0175 oh got ya! no worries, it's hard to tell on youtube. I don't blame you guys at all, some of the venomous ones can be really really cryptic. I photographed a death adder a few weeks ago in Australia. I would not have seen it if it wasn't on a rock.
@@MrNicholaslarghi I used to see 40 to 60 or more venomous snakebites a week. The next day I would see the after effects as not everything bitten was eaten. Not to be overly obvious or demeaning in any way, I’ll just say snake bite is best avoided. There is no upside that I could discern.
@@MrNicholaslarghi 'there were no other snakes in the area at this time' - I think that's his point
You are so, SO dam lucky it did not go in your bag. That's what I was saying "he's going in your bag, in your bag, IN YOUR BAG!!"
I would’ve lost a lot of lenses that day if it went in ha!
The snake wants to tell you about Jesus.
The snake was about to introduce him to Jesus. Lol
I thought he wanted me to know about my extended warranty
Nice Tommy Goff, lots of those in Belize, biggest one I saw was about 6' but they get bigger.
The expert, know it all snake photographer tells the girl not to worry as he starts to panic as snake changes direction towards him. Fool
I was panicking because it was heading into my bag lol. Such a cool snake
Spent 6 weeks in Panama and saw several Fer De Lance - that is the biggest one I ever saw. They’re unbelievably quick.
Is this the hanging bridges near Arenal / La Fortuna? Just come back from there!
This was in the rainmaker park near Manuel Antonio
What’s that old Costa Rican saying, “it’s better to have a machete and not need it than to need a machete and not have it”.
No machete was necessary here
The biggest jararaca and the most dangerous too
The mamba of the vipers
Pura Vida!! 🐍
Served in Central America in the Peace Corp. "Tommy Goths," the British called them.
Very very bad news. They are known to be territorial and aggressive.
That snake is like, “Here, hold my Bud Light and watch this.”
You risk your life just for a photo....hummm okay.
My life was at minimal risk. And it’s for more than a photo, it’s to experience an animal. Snakes don’t just randomly attack lol
@@steelrat5604 yes they are dangerous but no, snakes do not jump, Central American snakes do not spit venom, no snake pretends to run (slither) away and come back and attack. Snakes do not attack people, they want to be left alone. this snake was just exploring its surroundings.
@@steelrat5604 yes I am well aware of the snakes venom this was a top species for me to see when I was there. we spend most of our trips looking for snakes. The behavior you describe is not typical of snakes. Don't fall for the folklore. They behave like any other snake I've ever encountered. I've photographed some of the deadliest snakes in Australia too, no snake chases you. But thank you for taking the time to respond. Enjoy your day. Cheers.
@@steelrat5604 not even black mambas. Snakes don’t chase people
I saw a large 10ft one dead on the road in Jaco Beach Costa Rica
Wow - that is a whole lot of snake! 😮
Yea this was a big one
I was surprised at how big these snakes can get. Much bigger than this.
Sorry, they're shoes and handbags for me.
Then let's hope they get you before you get them.
It is incredible how very much it looks like a western diamondback rattlesnake.
One deadly snake and kills dozens of people each year
When are you videographers going to give an acceptable volume level?
not sure, I didn't think the volume was bad. What would be considered an acceptable starting volume?
I bumped into the odd 1 or 2 of those in Belize.
Did he tell the snake to sit?
I've herd that they are AGGRESSIVE.
from southern Mexico to northern South America.
Get closer for your photo!!
This guy isn't very smart.
Why is he coming toward you ?😮
snakes like most animals, can be curious. It was checking out our surroundings and seeing what we were etc.
I thought the bushmaster was the “terciopelo “?
the bushmaster is a formidable snake. But the name terciopelo is for Bothrops asper or the Fer-de-lance. I looked up bushmaster the best I could get was 'maestro del Bosque'
Bushmaster or mute rattlesnake is the biggest venomous snake in Panamá and around Central American. Lachesis muta was before the scientific name. They have a non functional rattlesnake!!!
bushmaster is mata buey I think (steer killer)
Just saw a little four half foot bull snake mowing a school it was nice just looking for a meal. I saw it climbing up a tree when I passed by my mower. Then I saw her again in the grass so I let her go by I couldn’t of killed her with my mower, but why there is no reason.
let the snakes be for sure. They're excellent for the ecosystem. Live and let live. Thanks for helping out!
Lol bags his till he's done with it but nobody's gonna steal it!
I like the flash technique.
thank you, my photography in all facets improved greatly when I learned about off camera flash. I almost exclusively do this now, for weddings, flowers, snakes etc.
And they don't even have the common courtesy to grow a set of rattlers to alert the unsuspecting.
Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Aaaand NOPE!
That guy is crazy, ran into one on patrol and stared at the creature for what seemed an eternity, we were on reccee and on low crawl. Simple you get bit you die.
Sma but deadly , then there is the bushmaster .
Yea the bushmaster we unfortunately did not get to see. I want to go back and look for it though. I hear they’re difficult to find in Costa Rica
We were out in a boat in Tortuguera when we saw a Bushmaster swimming across the river-it swam to the boat and tried to get onboard-didn’t succeed luckily.
The chances some people take to get a photo.
We were perfectly fine. The snake was actually much further than it looks in the video. That and it was very mellow not showing any signs of defensiveness etc.
@@MrNicholaslarghi I prefer to watch it on a video, glad you felt safe and were not in any danger to get the photo.
@@ABfromWindsor there's no more exhilarating feeling than experience a dangerous animal in person. I promise it's so much cooler than online. Either way I'm glad you stopped by!
Yeah, give it a wide birth ....Extremely dangerous snake ..
Very much so. A wishlist item for sure
No no no don't go in my bag...Not exactly Alpha male Arnold here.
not sure what you mean. I don't know about you but I wouldn't want to try to get a snake that venomous of that bag!
@@MrNicholaslarghi Teasing man I'd be the same way!
They lunge. Not trustworthy.
Not gonna lie...I was rooting for the snake.
😂You and me both!
not sure why you're so mean about it. No harm to the snake occurred here. Just sharing the same trail.
@@MrNicholaslarghi whaddaya mean mean? Old saying 'Fork with the bull...Get the horns.' You, Nick were Forking with the Bull. And if you had been bit...well...
One of these bit an uncle of mine. Almost killed him.
Ok..Snakes cannot hear you..stop shouting at it. 🥴
lol I know they can't hear me. More exclamations of excitement and potential dread of trying to remove one from my bag
Plus, it may not understand English.
Snakes can hear actually, they just don't have an external ear.
Tourists!
yes by definition we were tourists here. Not sure in what way you mean this.
Those things, when properly skinned and cured, can be used for belts and such.
Which is what vile and arrogant poachers do to these beautiful and amazing animals.
@@DM-ur8vc. No. He's just curious and nice.
@@DM-ur8vc. Ahh, I see. Well played, my dude, well played.
Exterminate ALL snakes
never
Why?
I found Your video to be disturbing. You and the Lady (out of the view) were interacting with a very dangerous animal. I didn't feel you were exercising enough respect. I am afraid some of Your viewers will not learn how quickly this situation could turn deadly. I am blocking your Video because of this. jimmy
I’m sorry you feel that way. The animal and use both had plenty of space. I understand how dangerous they are. Sorry you had to block my video 🤷♂️
Sadly there are way too few Fer du Lances on guard to protect the jungle from unwanted human intruders!
@0:53 oh shit !
