One of the Most Productive Photography Trips of my Life

- I spent three weeks in November and December travelling around the US south west and the forests of the Pacific North west, a bucket list trip that I’ve wanted to do for years. The south west more than met my expectations, it’s an incredible stunning place with some of the most unique landscapes I’ve ever seen.
Please check out the work of my friend and fellow traveller Hougaard Malan @hougaard_malan and good friends Chris, Marshall and Sarah @chrisdarnellphoto, @marshallevansphoto and @smerrill.photos
Chris also has a fantastic RUclips channel @ChrisDarnell
Please note, none of the drone footage or images in this video were shot in a National or State park. I was travelling with three local people and we thoroughly checked to make sure we knew the legislation and that all laws were respected at all times.

Wow...I'm just overwhelmed. Thank you.
Thanks so much for the comment
Congrats on 100k. Well deserved. 🎉
Thanks so much for the support
Was in Bryce Canyon a week ago, after watching your review of (and buying) the GF 20-35 two weeks ago. So nice to see how you capture the same landscape and learning from you. I hope you took the highway into Zion when you drove to Vegas (passing Keyhole Canyon and Checkerboard Mesa). It's a mesmerizing drive.
Thanks so much for the comment. Bryce really was amazing, as was most of the South West. We didn't see Zion...we didn't have enough time and there were so many places that we didn't get to see. Hopefully next time
I have the need to let you know how much I appreciate your channel. I just recently returned to my old photography hobby and got myself a fujifilm x-t5 and three lenses. Your approach and voice are an absolute absolute inspiration.
Keep up your fantastic work and thank you.
I'm a classical orchestra musician, so when you talk about lines and focus points, foreground and background, it is just how classical music are build.
Like Bach, Tjajkovskij or Mozart. Schostakowitsch or Messian. It's all about the importance of how to bring the different voices together to a complete whole. Like leading lines towards the subject. It's beautiful and when the same principles works with music and visual art, you know it's correct.
At least as a base idea.
Thank so much for the lovely comment. Really glad you appreciate the channel and find it useful
The coordination it must take (not to mention the effort) of setting up these shots must involve alot of expertise, practice and instincts. The compositions at White Pocket were completely surreal and the drone shots are practically hypnotic. Really brilliant.
Thanks so much for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video
From the bottom of the Grand Canyon continuously up 100 miles north to the plateaus of southern Utah is a sedimentary record going back 600 million years. That’s why they call it the Grand Staircase. Such a stunning, awe-inspiring landscape…
Thanks for the comment, it’s a fascinating place
Wow, a spectacular part of the world, looks like you're having an amazing, busy time. Thanks for uploading.
Thanks so much for the comment, really glad you enjoyed the video. It’s an amazing part of the world
Excellent video Andy. What a beautiful part of the world. This may have already been asked, but I noticed on this trip you are using your XT5 and not your GFX system. I assume this was due to size and weight? After using your XT5 for this trip do you see yourself using the XT5 more than the GFX moving forward? Thanks again for creating such fantastic work.
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. I like both system and what I take tends to be determined by a couple of things. Weight, whether I’ll need a lot of reach, and what lenses I plan to take. I took the XT5 because I wanted to take the 8mm and the 70-300, which there aren’t equivalents of for the GFX
Hell yeah!
Cheers
So glad you got experience White Pocket. It such a unique place! Loving your trip through the Southwest. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it
I was in Bryce around this time around 15 years ago, I saw 4 other people ... obviously not many people visit when it's cold. Over a period of 5 or 6 year I spend some (lots of) time in Utah, it is just magnificent. No matter how much time you use you'll never be able to see everything.
Thanks so much for the comment. You’re right, you could spend a lifetime shooting the southwest and still not scratch the surface of it. I’ve never seen such a rich and diverse landscape
Simply breath taking images Andy. Counting down the days to your workshop next year
Cheers Ashit, it’s going to be lots of fun
Really enjoyed the Utah series Andy. Can't wait for more videos of your adventures and also, congratulations on 100k subscribers 👍
Thanks so much, glad you’re enjoying the videos
Looks outerworldly 😍 I think id would be lost in the patterns😂 thanx for a great video.
Thanks so much for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video
Really enjoyed your video. I live in Arizona and I love getting out into these areas. It truly can be overwhelming! Good job!
Thanks so much, it;s a lovely corner of the world
Wave as you drive by! Vegas denizen enjoying you showing me my back yard!
Hahaha..this was recorded a while ago now..we were there in late November, but did pass through Vegas airport on our way to the PNW
Thanks for sharing your fabulous adventure. I've recently begun exploring parts of that region myself -- first the Bisti Badlands of New Mexico, and last month Death Valley and neighboring parts of Nevada. Truly amazing landscapes, if often overwhelming...
It really is an amazing part of the world, you could spend years there and not see it all
What an adventure you have had, I hope Chris gets some images up
Thanks so much , glad you enjoyed the video. I know for sure Chris will get some images up, as well as videos, when he has a bit more time
Crazy nice! Arizona and Utah planets :) Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for the comment, it really is an amazing place
Whoa, amazing shots, Andy! Those from White Pocket were re
especially impressive! Seems like the Sigma 10 - 18 would've nicely fit in your bag... Since the Sigma and 8 mm are quite small, I think they're gonna replace my 10 - 24 sooner or later. Glad your trip came out so worthwhile for you. Maybe someday... 😊
Thanks so much for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. White Pocket really is special and a place I’d love to get back to. As for the Sigma, its a lovely lens. Im in Patagonia at the moment and thats the wide angle lens I’ve brought with me
Thanks for sharing and taking us along Andy, great content as always and congratulations on 100k subscribers, well deserved.
Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed it
Thanks so much for the comment, glad you enjoy the videos
Such a different place from what I’m used to. I live in the heart of the smoky mountains in Tennessee and it’s like another planet from the western states.
Thanks so much. Yeah, the scenery is so unique there. Utah and Arizona really do have some amazing landscapes
Loved my time in White Pocket.
It’s a special place
Thanks, Andy - another enjoyable video. I hope Patagonia will go as well. :)
Thanks Torsten, glad you enjoyed the video. Just arrived in Punta Arenas and spending a couple of days here to relax before we head into the parks on Tuesday
Very good months to make your trip.
Thanks a lot. We wanted to get there out of season so the places would be as quiet as possible
Amazing locations, inspiring stuff.
Thanks so much for watching
Lovely job buddy, some really nice sots in this one
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video
Inspiring video! And congrats for the 100K!
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it
I've been to Bryce Canyon. I hiked the Navajo Trail exactly where you were. Of all the National Parks, Bryce is my favourite. Zion is 2nd.
It’s a stunning place
Great video - I really enjoyed the more abstract shots coming from the Air 2S. Interesting that you mentioned 4x5 large format at the end. I'm actually thinking about picking up an Intrepid 4x5 camera. I currently own a Voightlander Bessa II 6x9 and that's been a real blast to shoot with - I may actually bring that one to Iceland next year as the shots I get from it have a great vintage feel to them. 4x5 feels like the next logical step in my film journey. Watching this video makes me feel like I really need to get back to the southwest - there is just so much to see. Thanks again.
Thanks for watching, really glad you enjoyed the video
Excellent video. I have visited Bryce quite a few times - but always in summer when it is so hot in there. It looks strange to see people wearing winter clothing in that locale.
Thanks so much for the comment. For me it’s hard to think of it as hot there as it was the coldest place we visited in the SW
Amazing place! Love the abstract drone shots.
I hope you discuss how you got on with the 16-80 and 70-300 as a combo after your trip. I'm sure people would be keen to hear your thoughts (me included).
Thanks! And congrats on 100K :)
Glad you enjoyed the video. I’ve spoken about those 2 lenses together in the 16-80 review I made. They work well
@@AndyMumford Thanks for the reply Andy! I thought I remember you saying it was the first time taking that combo on a trip, but maybe I got that wrong. I'll re-watch your 16-80 review :) Do you think those two lenses plus your ultra wide prime will replace your 10-24 & 55 200 for these type of trips? Thanks!
There’s nothing like Utah
It’s a special place
Having been to that area many times you come to realise its better to concentrate on a couple of areas. Ok for a first trip as a taster, but less is sometimes more.
We did spend time concentrating on a specific area around Hanksville, where we stayed for a week and explored the Badlands. My first two SW videos were about it. Then we spent a couple of days just dipping into a few places to decide which we’d like to visit properly next time, which is what you see here
Sadly, in my opinion, you've missed the best part of Bryce - that is actually walking in the canyon. There are so many more photo opportunities than being on the rim or at the beginning of 'Wall Street'. Perhaps another time?
We missed so much due to lack of time, but we’ll be back
Great images and explanations. Sound was very clear. What camera did you use for the vlogging and voice recording?
Thanks so much, really glad you enjoyed the video. I used a DJI Action 4 and DJI Mic for vlogging on this trip
I'd love to see you editing your photos in 2024 ;)
I’ll try and get a video out at some point
@@AndyMumford Thanks ☺️
please filter the bass out if you have that mouch wind noise
I didn’t feel that there was significant wind noise at any point or I would have filtered it out
Not bad.. but all the skies look completely blown out??
None of the images are blown out. Blown out is off the end of the histogram where no data is recorded and all of these images has data in the highlights. They’re just bright, which is deliberate because leaning into the light and pushing the highlights, letting them flood the image, creates more interest in skies that are flat and empty. It’s a creative choice, and I’ve long been interested by the fact that there’s a feeling in photography that images have to be exposed down the middle of the histogram, when actually using the ends of it in the shadows or highlights can create powerful effects.
