This past April, my mother passed away from alcohol related issues.
We are, Apache Native Americans, so alcoholism runs in our families.
It was such a horrible process to see what she went through but sadly she was never able to stop despite doctors telling her numerous times. It had even caused her to lose a couple of really good jobs.
I like a good drink every once in a while, but I use her as an example to not let it control me.

I was an alcoholic throughout my 20's and early 30's, and my life was an absolute wreck. My house was filthy, I was driving drunk, buying entire bottles of wine/liquor or huge packs of beer after work. I'd even plan out my evening to make the buzz last all night. It was pathetic. I finally hit rock bottom when my rental sold out from under me and I was faced with cleaning it out. It was horrific, and I couldn't believe how I let it get that bad. Bottles and trash everywhere. I looked in the mirror and I was toeing the scale at nearly 200lbs from all the booze and junk food. I didn't recognize myself. I managed to quit cold turkey then and there, even though it was extremely rough. I just took it one day at a time, and forgave myself for days where I slipped up and had a drink. I've been completely sober for 3 years now, and after joining a gym last year, I've lost 40lbs so far! Here's to another sober, healthy year 😊

Yes - people who can drink socially and people who can't due to health issues should always be "separate". "Ordinary" people who can drink socially shouldn't suffer due to those who can't, and those who can't shouldn't suffer because of those who can (e.g. being forved to drinl to be socialised)

Although I do occasionally drink from time to time, I tend to avoid it due to the effects not exactly being the most desirable to me. I really don’t like the feeling of being tipsy, especially when it makes me feel uncomfortably dissociated from myself. (That is the reason I don’t even dare try to drink to get drunk.) That is why when I do drink, I make sure the beverage is something tasty or enjoyable so any side effects I feel afterwards are more worth it.

It turned me off alcohol so much I didn’t drink til after the New Years countdown and I only took a single shot of some homemade alcohol with friends just to ring in the new years. I know next time I go on a cruise I shouldn’t get too excessive with drinking, even with a drink package.

I have no bitterness though, because when as a young adult, I finally spent a few weeks with him, and after seeing what his alcoholism was like, I was grateful that I grew up not with him, but in the home I had.
