I’m 50 years old and I remember being at my aunt and uncle’s house in Dayton, OH probably 45 years ago playing with their old slot machine. I’d sit and pull that arm for as long as they would let me. Good times! Thanks for taking me down memory lane. Interesting to see the inner workings too!
Not as old as you, but i havw a similar memory. I really regret not asking for that slot machine after my grandfather died and my grandma was moving to a retirement home. The value of it was worth far less than the memory i have with it, but its now gone forever.
This is when slot machines are actually by chance now they are programmed. It's pretty much like a combination lock. When the right combination hits you unlock the device
This guy's got no idea🙄 old slot machines were easily rigged in the houses favor. And just so you know, machines/programs don't make mistakes, people do. If something wasn't a mistake, it was intended. You're not more likely to win or lose just because it's mechanical.
That really is amazing. Imagine how much effort went into designing and building just one of those. Even if you use 80% of the design of someone elses, you still have to size everything correctly and test it a ton of times for longevity.
IMO these vintage machine with lever & spinning drums with all the sounds and actual coins seem infinitely more fun than the modern slot machine with button, flat monitor, and credits added to a plastic card.
My Grandpa had a blue 1930s Mills Bursting Cherry 5 cent slot machine just like the one in the video, color aside. It's cool seeing the inner workings of a piece of my childhood.
Was it sky blue or dark blue?? This machine *should* be the sky blue '37 model, but there were a lot of bursting cherry "brown fronts" that got refurbished by the company and painted navy blue during the war years
@@ZipperonDisney It has been a few years since I last saw it, but I think it was dark blue. My Grampa passed away a few years ago, and now it belongs to my Aunt. She told me that it was a 1934 and that it had been touched up at some point, but I don't know too much about it other than the make and model.
I want one of these again so badly. I grew up with one of these (Not this exact model) when I was really little and still living in vegas, I used to play with this thing every day and get so excited when I won, even though I wasn't winning anything. I think I was just a born gambler. Not that it's a good thing, because now I'm catching myself spending hours at slots in video games just to hit a win. I would gain and lose nothing (except time) so that eased my mind a little but still.
Im 21 years old and I remember playing with a a more modern version of this when I was a kid. Brought back some good memories hustling my friends with my good luck
WOW, IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN NOT ACCOMPLISH? Disney with the list of capabilities you possess, Father, Createtor; Story Teller; Husband; Dungeon Master and Slot Restoration Specialist, incredible!!!
Used to be some casino owners would block the slots for a jackpot so noone could win. Now they just have to program the algorithm to make the chances slim
this is cool. and it means that you cant actually cheat customers unless you remove the spring..hm. either way fantastic piece. i love electromechanical machines
This one is a GENUINE 1937. That is the year this casing came out, but most with the "bursting cherry" are made in '38 or later. Stay tuned for a video in how I tracked down and confirmed the year of manufacture!
So old slots could be rigged by simply removing a couple of springs and having a guy's who's job was to pull the lever to remove any winning combination while the person was getting a staff member
The more common way was to plug up stops on the reels so the machine couldn't stop on the winning symbol. That way the user wouldn't know they were being cheated -> antiqueslotmachine.blogspot.com/2012/01/bugs-in-my-antique-slot-machine.html
i thought it was a dice roller. XD like you pulled the handle, a mechanism would roll your dice for you and then spit them out. i was, "whoa, cool way to repurpose an old slot mech!" lol ah, well. still interesting to know about though.
The belief that machines are due to pay after a certain amount of money used to be based on reality then rather than just not understanding probability. However that belief has carried onto electronic machines, which no longer work like that
I think it was a replacement during a bad restoration job. I had to cut a few coils to keep the correct tension. What shady owners used to do was plug up the reel stops where the big prizes symbols were, so the machine couldn't stop on those jackpots! Then district attorney of San Francisco and to-be Chief Justice of the US Supream Court, Earl Warren ran a raid on the Mills warehouse where several of these "bugs" were found. That helped sway public option against upcoming legislation that was supposed to formally legalize gambling machines.
when the reels stop is controlled by some timing gears that are revved up when you pull the handle. There is a little fan that sits on them that gives enough variance to the resistance the gears experience to make it functionally random
This One-Armed Bandit nearly got away with all that loot! Good work sorting out this ill lot and put them on the right path of fair and justice gambling. Don't want the government coming in and bashing the whole place and taking all the money?
I have a piggy bank that is a slot machine and I had to open it up to find out why it was not working turns out a gear has some missing teeth and a gear I think is broken off of a rod that was holding it.
Aww man we used to have one like that and then suddenly it just wouldn't stop spinning so we got rid of it. Never thought to open it up and look for loose springs. I was also pretty young at the time ┐( ∵ )┌
these slot machines seem more… let’s say “honest” than current electronic ones you see in today’s casinos. I know it can be done, but it’s hard for me to imagine the machine could be made to “cheat” in the same way that coded machines today can be made “cheat” to ensure the house always wins. It seems like randomness is a larger factor in this machine other than the fact that it won’t give a payload until the coin tube(?) is full. Although, I hesitate to call completely “honest” or unable to “cheat” because at the end of the day it’s still gambling. I wouldn’t mind owning one of these slot machines as a novelty item though.

Thanks for sharing. Sounds like a good time.
The amount of engineering in these is amazing
I used to repair these for my grandpa for about 15 years, always so cool seeing stuff like this in the wild
yo! your know-how is very valuable to collectors
This is when slot machines are actually by chance now they are programmed. It's pretty much like a combination lock. When the right combination hits you unlock the device
You legit just learned that it has a minimum payout just like modern slots it's just a tube that fills with coins instead of being programed
This guy's got no idea🙄

He just showed that it is rigged and exactly how its done
I thought everyone knew those machines were rigged. If they weren’t rigged they would make no money.
Dude LITTERALY pointed out the tube that is A LITTERAL CONDITION for the layout to even happen. Are you blind and deaf or something ?
That thing looks like a mechanical nightmare and i love it lol
Yeah, when he opened, I said "someone check for the engineer metal health".
If Las Vegas still had these I’d still be playing.

Very interesting breakdown. Love seeing such classic machinery

I got into machineing at a young age and i have always wanted one of these. But i want to make a clear cover for it so i can watch everything moving.
Yo that would be sick, especially if you color code painted all the parts (e.g. payout is green, timing is red)
@@ZipperonDisney thank you for sparing some adhd thats awesome
Christ, these payouts are more honest than the digital ones these days
Yes, but oddly modern machines pay out way more - like 90% compared to the 75% this machine does
Now this, this is true gambeling not that bs of new electronic machines
what's weird is modern machines pay out much better than old ones, but still feel cheaper!
I haven't seen one of those in eons! Friends of my family had one!
they should make a transparent one so people dont feel cheated if they loose because they won in a way

Awesome! Now I just need to find a casino with nothing but 1930s slot machines and I can jimmy it.
So if i understand correctly, it never gives out anything unless it has already paid for itself?
Ahhh...so they are magic! Got it.
I wish slot machines were still mechanical then you know you're not being digitally jipped
So is the chances set? How does the randomness work on it?
There is a little fan on the clockwork that adds a little variance in how long before the brakes fall onto the reels.
Prove they are rigged. Machine does not pay out jackpot until the pay tube fills up. Unreal. Impressive system tough for sure.
good to know. mine hasn't paid out in years. it may also be jammed? I'll have to take a look

ooooo this thing is cool!
I wanna get one for my kids now so they can take it apart an explore the inside.
What determines when the wheels stop spinning though?
The clockwork gets wound when you pull the handle, and it times the fall of the brakes onto the reels
Gosh, what I'd do to get one of these
So did the spring get knocked loose or did a shady former owner of the machine loosen it?
