I spent a couple of days before my meet to learn the hitch-kick and at the meet I improved my personal best by 30cm! My left arm is still doing nothing so that's something im gonna work on. But this video helped me a lot! Im 14 years old and my pb is now 5.93m. Working to get up to 6.20 this season.
Hi John, Thanks for the awesome videos! I have a problem with most of my long jumpers basically refusing to land on their butts. They land sort of like a gymnastics “stick” position. Despite repeatedly coaching them to bring their feet up on the landing, they all continue to bring their chest down! Perhaps I need to just work landings more frequently, which is impossible during indoor season without a pit. I basically have access to a gymnasium and a high jump mat. I have them working up onto the landing mat for now. I didn’t know if their was any advice or drills you may have for that problem. Thanks again!
Good to hear from you and Happy New Year! You have obvious difficulties with not being able to use a pit at the moment ... using a high jump mat is a good idea to work on lifting the legs up prior to landing. Often the inability to achieve a suitable landing position results from a less than obvious take-off with rotation ensuing from this. Forward rotation being the one to cause the feet to drop. Thus it could be an idea to position a raised platform (10-15cm) to use as a take off ‘board’ and then place HJ mats in position so that the jumpers land on them safely ... I suggest this set up, so they gains little height from the platform and are can effect a decent take-off before going into the landing position. Only use a short run up for safety. So, focus on the take-off and then the landing. For hip flexor strength and lower ab strength to assist with landing mechanics - hanging bar leg lifts could be an option as could similar exercises which require the legs to be raised ... v sits, Swiss ball lifts and so on. However, these will be secondary to learning how to take-off effectively and combat rotational forces. Hope this helps a bit!
