    While this is a time for celebration for some, I fear the idea that the likes of us might have to start a "507 (or 508!) preservation society"! I deeply hope these BREL trains don't meet the same fate as their LMS forebearers; that is being nearly entirely scrapped, with only 2 coaches saved only through the efforts of a few dedicated activists!

      @Merseywail  Год назад +1

      I do hope that a example of the units does get saved for the future. I know there are interested parties already but not sure how their efforts are going. Unfortunately I don't think it's for a complete unit, but just a single coach. Saving a complete unit would have problems, the big one is storage.

      @@Merseywail Just one coach?! That's shocking.
      If you have any resources to read, I'd love to learn more about this! I've heard nothing on the matter, personally. It's embarrassing that no railway museums seem to be getting in touch, and especially so considering the heritage railways that would bend over backwards for a chance to be donated such a significant piece of railway history and be given the honour of preserving it.

      @Merseywail  Год назад +1

      @@caramelldansen2204 the one coach proposal is from the Liverpool museums. As you can imagine fitting a full 3 car train into a museum isn't practical. The national railway museum originally only wanted a motor coach from the 502s. But were persuaded to get two due to the space available at Southport museum & the possibility of running it over Merseyrail lines

      @@Merseywail Museums can't get the money to store the history they're supposed to be able to protect, while billionaires have a building-measuring contest with skyscrapers and bulldoze historical grade-listed sites to build stadiums.
      I suppose nothing better represents the current state of things, eh...?

    Travelled on one from Kirkby the other day. They are much better. And you only realise how much when you get back on one of the 507/508s and remember how loud and juddery they are.

      @Merseywail  Год назад

      You certainly notice the difference going between new & old. The old stock is so noisy shaky in comparison. Then again they are now over 40 years old

    I really love the Mersey rail system new trains look superb,the 507/508done well and still looked modern today we had the left over 508 trailers in our 455/7 units when I worked for SWT the profile looked more modern than the 455 mk 3 design

    • @Merseywail
      @Merseywail  Год назад +1

      The new trains are long overdue & are certainly a big change from the 507 508s though they will be missed. The modern profile of the PEP stock was largely for the tunnel services that the PEPs served. The MK3 design EMUs looking older due no doubt to their mainline stock heritage

    Wow what a fantastic video. Your choice of archieve material and wonderful narrative summation of the history leading to the 777 is masterful. Sorry for hassling you earlier, this was well worth waiting for and I'll be replaying it many times. Brilliant, cheers. Your a Don.

So I was puzzled by your reply until I searched the web tonight and low and behold there's loads of stuff. Sorry thought it was rare. I was always facinated by the Place Hotel station and where the line used to cross the by pass to what is now the coast road. I ain't been back in an age. Cheers love your dedication.

      @@dufushead it will be lesser known to younger enthusiasts. Then again a lot is little know to them. Am friends with a fellow RUclipsr his videos are ok but he constantly gets history wrong. The problem with younger ones is they rely on Wikipedia. Unfortunately that site very often contains inaccuracies. I always try to dig deeper with mine .

    More Merseyrail Class 777 Metro units will be in service on the City Line, Northern Line and Wirral Line. As they are tri-voltage trains and can operate on DC 750v 3rd Rail, AC 25kv OHL and battery power on shorter distances that doesn’t require any electrification.
    Including the new Headbolt Lane railway station that is to have 3 platforms and Class 777s will run on battery power to Headbolt Lane.

    • @Merseywail
      @Merseywail  Год назад +1

      Merseyrail have ambitious plans for the 777 units. Tests have shown that they can travel at least 20 miles on battery power which means that the network can be greatly extended. At a talk I attended by David Powell. He showed a map of the possible extensions. He was asked a question from the floor about the various power modes. The answer he gave was that the units can be 3rd rail & battery or 3rd rail & overhead but not all 3 on one unit. This due to technical reasons & available space. But hopefully we will see these new trains going to new destinations in the future
